Egypt Hot-Spot for Second Front Drive By DeWitt Mackenzie (Wide World wr Analjill H looks very much now as though we should see a new and perhaps decisive front opened before long in the Egyptian Middle East theatre, and it's the toss o a coin whether this will be initiated by the allies or by - the nazi dictator. There's no doubt the allies are actively preparing for this pos-j sibihty. We see that in today's announcement of the formation of a new British command for Iran (Persia) and Iraq under General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson, distinguished tactician. And that's only one of numerous recent developments pointing in this direction, including British Premier Churchill's unexpected visit to Egypt for a reorganiza tion of the command there. Egypt Hot Spot The fireworks might start in the middle east, but it's much more likely that they will be touched off in Egypt. Certainly we may expect either that nazi Field Marshal Rommel will re sume his effort to conquer Egypt and fight his way through to join his master in the middle cast, or that the allies will strike at Rom mel in an effort to knock him out and thus destroy one of the claws of the pincers which Hit ler is trying to fix about that whole zone. Of course, immediate estab lishment of a second front in western Europe might affect the trend in the middle cast. It's unlikely, though that Hitler's at tempt to capture Egypt and the middle east would be scrapped, because the side which holds that strategically vital zone probably will win the war. Second Front Looms - By the way, speaking of a second front in France, it's to be hoped that the Commando show at Dieppe last week finally con vinced civilians who have been shouting for such a front that the time of its inauguration is definitely a matter for the high command to decide. That was a magnificent display of bravery and skill at arms, and it demon straled that the continent can be WANTED HOP PICKERS Now picking late. hops; good crop and good camp grounds; store on grounds; 4 miles west of Salem. That cost won't stop us when the job has to be done, but it ought to cool off those who are trying to rush the high command into action against Us better judgment. Depends on Hitler But to return to our muttons, Hitler has perhaps months of fine campaigning weather left. Should he in that time be able to fight his way past the Cau casian mountain range to the border of the middle east, he might well attempt to continue his drive. Meantime the mas terful Rommel would have at tempted to get his own military machine rumbling eastward again. But if the Russians are able to stop Hitler short of the south ern Caucasus he will have to de velop his middle eastern cam paign differently. He then will attempt to strike from Egypt if the allies haven't smashed Rommel meantime and will be able to throw men and equip ment into the operation from the winter-bound Russian front while he holds there with a greatly reduced force.
