synopsis: Anns Wlllard, with BUze
Sherwood and Pete Mackey, have landed
In the middle of a Mongolian snowstorm,
and are now in the-'reasonably tolerant
custody of the headman of a tiny vlllase.
He plans to take the lot of them to the
authorities, and Anne has gone to find
a women who speaks English, hoping that
she may persuade her to give them some
selp. The woman has taken refuge in a
heeplold from her Irate husband.
Chapter Six
Sudden Flans
Having seen Sherwood give
Mackey medicine, the old wo
man showed him a cut on her
arm. He disinfected and band
aged the wound and gave her a
little tablet to swallow for its
mental effect.
Anne napped a bit and was
aroused by a hand on her wrist.
Sherwood was bending over her.
She sat up quickly.
"Pardon, I didn't mean to star
tle you." He dropped down be
side her.
"You seem to have a way with
women and children," she said,
brushing, her shining hair back
from her, forehe'ad; ' r " '
"I hope so," he grinned, and
lowered his voice unconsciously.
"I don't like our position here.
We're not prisoners exactly but
our host is the village headman,
' and he intends marching us
down to Arishar, the capital, to
morrow. White men are not
apt to be well received in that
robbers roost though red-headed
women are highly prized?' It
took a moment for that to sink
in, then Anne protested.
"But my hair's not red."
"Close enough, I fear nearer
red than black."
' "So what?" she demanded.
"I don't know," in troubled
tones. "Perhaps if you'd seem to
become dreadfully ill they'd
leave you here with the women.
It's a two days' journey."
"It wouldn't be hard to fall
sick here," Anne oserved.
He smiled at that.. "Shall I re
peat what these women think of
you?"
"Go ahead." though she felt a
bit apprehensive at the twinkle
in his eyes.
"They think that anybody
keeping as clean as you are, must
be in very poor health. And they
pity you, profoundly, because
you have no baby."
"Weill" gasped Anne, and then
she' laughed. "If my college
dean of women could hear thatl"
"I learned something else," he
went on, "the village scanaai
Though she's ' ashamed of the
fact and keeps it secret, that
woman who was thrown out
went to a British mission school
in Khotan when she was a child,
Perhaps you can talk to her.
Anne- rose. "I'll go to the
sheepfold and see if I can find
her." She gathered up her pos
sessions and left.
The woman had already bed
ded down, for the night. She
sat up amiably and lighted a
candle when Anne appeared
Presently she admitted that she
understood and could talk a bit
of English, that she had known
all along the travelers were Eng
lish and not Tibetan, though she
had told no one. Her name was
Khallma.
Anne showed her a coin, and
the woman's eyes bleamed. She
agreed gladly to circumvent the
men of her family and save the
white woman from being taken
to the Emir. '
' At the same time, she declar
ed, the safest place to hide from
trie Em r was in his own oalace.
His wife, the nrlneess. would
help them and contrive an
escape across the border. She
also had attended a mission
school. Khalima was her slave

girl at the time. Now Khalima's
mother cooked in the harem.
They could easily gain admit
tance with Anne in disguise. To
night they should go to a serai
an hour across the hills on the
main caravan route to the capi
tal. All this sudden and dramatic
planning left Anne a bit breath
less, but she determined to fol
low the woman. At least it was
better than facing imprisonment.
Khalima went bustling about in
the shed, wrapping herself in
sheep skins and binding her feet
in rags, when suddenly they
heard footsteps approaching.
Sherwood appeared. "Y o u
stayed away so long you had me
worried," he said, coming to
Anne out of the gloom. "Have
you been able to talk to her?"
"I have," she replied, motion
ing for him to sit down beside
her on a pile of fleeces. "Kha
lima's feeling resentful against
all men just now and thinks we
can make her relatives believe
I wondered away in the storm
and became lost. They'll not
make much effort to find me
since I'm only a' woman, she
says, because a woman who can
not take care of herself is not
worth worrying about. She's
going to hide me.
"Where?" '
"I'd rather not say. I'll be
helped to escape across the bor
der to Phuka."
He petted an inquisitive sheep.
that came up and nosed him.
"Even the sheep find you irre
sistible," she jested.
I hope that's a lesson to you
to cease fighting me," he grin
ned. She shook her head. "I'm one
of those disagreeably independ
ent girls."
"There's a remedy for that
when I have time to get around
to it." He pushed the sheep
away. "Did your father send a
note by the Nagara priest who
met you?"
How do you know that man
was a priest?" she asked. He
had a woman with him and he
talked to me' in English.'
"Both of them together are
one priest."
She stared at him. "What
kind of mathematics is that
whereone plus one equals one?"

He laughed. "What did you
think of those two who came to
you?"
"They were strange," she said
thoughtfully. "Less childlike
and sly than most primitive peo
ple, but somehow more dan
gerous." He nodded. "Smart girl
You're going to be a credit to
our profession. "You haven't
told me yet if your father sent
a note by the Nagaras.
"Why didn't you stay that
night at Jus Masar and find
out?"
"I didn't want to complicate
things for you."
She looked at him curiously.
"Just why were you there?"
He hesitated a moment.

"And what about the little
bird that warned you?"
"Oh, that," he laughed. "It

by. I'd made friends with him."
"How did you know I'd be
there?"
"Doddap divined it. He's a
prophet, a seer. I didn't believe
him but I flew over just to"

she brought herself back with
an effort, "Yes, father sent a
note. Would you like to know
what was in it?"
He gave her a sidelong glance.
"He told you they had been cap
tured by the Nagaras and for
you to go ahead as planned."
"Wrong," she smiled. "They
are negotiating with the Naga
ras, and we are to go ahead as
planned. But the only plan I
can think of was a hope to gain
permission from the Chinese
governer to set up a radio they
took with them for the purpose
of sending out news of any dis
coveries they might make."
' "He might refer to your plan
to marry Dr. Oliver."
