lobby Talk -
' She was to have no voice In their
plan, and they had a plan, for Riv
stepped aside and talked hurriedly
with his father before he took her
arm and led her outside.
Fifteen minutes later she sat in
)the darkened theater and felt a
wave of fright sweep over her. She
was with friends, she told herself,
the Colonel whom she had known
since babyhood and Rlv with whom
she played and quarreled.
But she had interfered with some
plan upset some calculation of the
Colonel's, and she remembered
stories of the ruthless methods the
Colonel had used to carry through
his pet ambitions. ,
; Riv persisted In holding her small
cold hand and she' only half saw
the play, which was a gay sophisti
cated comedy, not tuned to her
present mood.
"We must have a drink," the
Colonel proposed upon Joining them
outside the theater... have my,
car. .I'll drive you across town
later."
She had a wild desire to break
away and hail a taxi. At half past
twelve, the men still lingered over
their Scotch and soda while her
sherry stood untouched on the table
In front of her.
There' was music,' which she
scarcely heard only to remember
that it was the tune she and johnny
danced to that evening, just a few
short hours ago. Now it seemed
an eternity since she promised to
be back when he called. One
o'clock. It was twenty after one
when the Colonel arose and said:
"You look sleepy."
She wasn't sleepy. She was wide
awake and nervous as a witch and
furious at her self for reading a
deliberate purpose to delay her in
the time they , had spent in the
theater and the cocktail bar.
"We'll drive Rlv home first," the
Colonel announced.
She was not surprise when they
finally reached her hotel to have
Colonel Moore announce that he
Q wanted to talk to her and there

deserted hotel lobby.
They sat down together on a sofa
in a far corner and the Colonel
lighted a cigar before he started
"You think I want to discuss your
marriage with my son," he began.
"I have no Intention of marry
ing Riv, for the very good reason
that Riv Is married already."
He smoked for a while, with his
small eyes cool and deliberate and
" thoughtful, before he made any
comment. "I know that your pride
Is hurt." he said slowly. "You're
a typical southern girl, Sue Ellen,
and you're pretty stubborn about
forgiving what happens every day
to s young man as attractive as
my son, Rlv."
"What Riv docs, doesn't con-
cern me any longer."
O "You're wrong." He stubbed out
his cigar and leaned forward to
ward her. "Frankly, I wanted Rlv
tn marrv Deedora Waller. That
marriage meant more to me than
one with you. You're poor, even
though pretty. You have no in
fluence. You belong to the past a
past of traditions and pride -and
values which stand for nothing to
day. I repeat, marriage with Dee
dora Waller suited me. I saw it
' coming in fact, 1 encouraged It.
Rlv told me that he was engaged
to you. but an engagement down
south Why. a Rirl has a dozen
before the marries."
"But our wedding date was set.'
she found herself Insisting, al.
though a short time before she had
frit no Interest In Rlv or her wed
ding plans with him. The Colonel's
com announcement that ne naa
fiever considered her- engagement
important Infuriated her, and for
the moment she forgot Johnny and
the hour and was determined to
prove just how justified she had
been in coming to Washington and
. . . by
insisting that Riv marry her.
Don't misunderstand me," beg
ged the Colonel. "I dislike what
Riv did. If he wanted to marry an
other girl he should have broken off
his engagement with you first. But
Riv did not have the courage to
tell you"
"And you know that what Riv
did would cause unfavorable com
ment in Tyler Springs," said Sue
Ellen staedlly. "Your political plans
would not mature, for Tyler Springs
is loyal and the Falrhope name Is
important. Even though the Fair.
hopes have no money, they still can
influence votes. I'll tell everyone
what I think of you and Riv"
The colonel held up a large white
hand. "You will tell just what I
want you tell," ho said positively,
"unless you want to see your two
aunts forced to go on relief."
Sue Ellen stared at him too en
raged to speak.
"Magnolia House belongs to the
bank," said Colonel Moore smooth
ly. "It has been mortgaged and re
mortgaged, just as Belle Acres was
mortgaged to keep up an appear
ance which no Falrhope can main
tain without substantial backing to
day.". , ' ' . ,
"And you are that backer."
He smiled and, reaching over,
patted her hand. "Sue Ellen, I like
your spirit. I'm quite reconciled to
having you for a daughter-in-law.
I want you to marry Riv when ev
erything 'has been cleared up. I
think you understand the best and
the worst about him."

She tried to interrupt, but he
shook his head. "Not a word. It was
unfortunate that you rushed off
so impulsively, but even that has
made be see and admire you, for
you're a girl of spirit and determin

"Colonel Moore," her eyes were
startllngly bright and her lips set
and positive, "I will not marry

to tilings I should have seen. Riv

myself, he read love into a child.

"Why not?" asked the Colonel
smoothly. "They have money.
Someone has to buy places like
Belle Acres when they are thrown
on the market for back taxes and
to pay overdue interest on mort

"Belle Acres will never fall In

He smiled. "Tonight when you

no further use for Riv, I have the
greatest sympathy for you, my dear,
and feel that this is no time to
bring you bad news."
His voice took a sympathetic
tone, but his cold hard eyes, were
stern.
