Amelia Next
"Lota of people. Almost all the
crew were there working."
"Anyone else?"
"Miss Thompson. She was set
ting the table."
Heartbreak
Jeff's hopeful face took a tum
ble. "Oh. Then you crossed before
the dirty work was done. And what
then?"
"I made the tea and In a min
ute or two Miss Thompson came In.
Then Z went to Miss North's dress
ing room with the teapot."
"Was anyone on the stage when
you recrossed It?"
"I didn't go through the set. I
went behind It and I didn't see
anyone, nobody at all."
"And last night you were in the
kitchen again when Miss North
was stabbed."
"I was Just coming out. I was
crossing backstage when Miss Rog
ers started screaming. Mr. Bowers
saw me, he was sitting there. Ho
Jumped up when the scream came
and ran right past me. I know
he saw me."
"Yes, Amelia, he said he did.
Jeff leaned forward and said earn
estly: "Amelia, haven't you ever
noticed anything strange in con
nection with Miss Blanton? Any
thing at all? Did anyone seem to
be wat:hing her a lot or follow
ing her around? Did . . ."
She hadn't heard. "She'd only
act for Mr. Bowers. He was good
to her. He could understand what
It meant for a beautiful woman to
be partly ugly. Sometimes I thought
Miss Eve wanted me to be around
her all the time because I'm ugly."
Jeff tried to swing the conversa
tion back to Carol. "Amelia, did
Miss Blanton ever seem fright
ened of anyone? Did she seem to
avoid any one person in the com
pany?"
"I remember when they brought
her to the hospital, so beautiful
and so horrible then. It was the
only time I ever cried when I was
a nurse. I made the doctors keep
it a secret about her scars. And
when she left the hospital, I went
with her."
"Amelia," Jeff said.
"I never even left her for more
than 1 could help it. And then it
was to do something for her. She
didn't want me to be away long.
I think she was always afraid.

a trunk hanger.
Last night there had been hor
ror and trascdy. but It was garish
and fantastic. This aftermath was
real, hcartbrcaklngly real. I almost
ran out of the building, away from

had lived and where now a tired
old woman was putting Eve's house
in order.

my hopes, however. After a brief

ette. Jen shook his head at me.

The door opened and Oreelcy Mor
ris blinked In our faces. He was
still In his pajamas.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Morrlsl"
Jeff's accent on the good was ter
rific. The playwright looked at us for
seconds while I grew crimson and
small. When he had finally reduced
me to something that must have
looked like a scarlet pygmy, he
said, smiling with 'Just his Hps:
'Do come in. It's so very nice to
see you."
Trying to act as If I hadn't no
ticed that he was in his pajamas,
which was a slightly difficult task,
I followed Morris into the room.
Jeff said blithely, "I'm sorry we
had to Intrude like this."
"I'm sure that you had no alter
native. Do you mind if I clean my
teeth?" He disappeared into the
bathroom. I was about to bolt.
I must have shown It, for Jeff
plunked me Into a chair and stood
over me.
"This will be over before you
know it. I Just want to find out
what kind of a guy he really is."
"He doesn't look like a murderer
In his pajamas. Jeff, do you have
a pair like that?"
"Where would I get a pair like
that? They probably cost nino
pounds, ten and a half. With only
one pair of pants."
"Are you going to be embar
rassed when Morris asks you what
the devil you want?"
"I want his autograph." Jeff
was leafing through a large flat
book that he had found on a corner
table. On the third page he began
to roar. "A scrapbookl And here's
another one I Haila, there must be
seven of them. Greeley Morris, the
world's number one Sophisticate
keeps scrapbooks! They must go
all the way back to a nursery rhyme
he said in kindergarten."
Jeff was still chuckling, but he
had managed to replace the books
and move away from the table be
fore our host returned. His dress
ing gown mado me gasp; In fact,
all his clothes had me wishing that
I were a man.
After ho had called room serv
ice and ordered a pot of coffee, he
lit one of his long peculiar looking
cigarettes and turned to Jeff with
a question in his eyes. The tele
phone buzzed. Morris answered it
and it was evidently an interview
His civility amazed me.
It was over at last and Morris
poured his coffee. He seemed vague
ly surprised that Jeff and I were
still there. "Well?" he smiled iron
ically, "Why did I want to kill
Miss Blanton? Why did I stab
Miss North? It's only fair, y
know, that I kept well informed
Jeff thumbed through a sheaf ot
clippings. I could see they were
reviews of Green Apples. Morris
crossed his legs, lit another cigar
ette, and waited. You could hear
the traffio screaming In tho street
below, accenting the stillness of the
room. I closed my eyes and plunged
in.
"It's too bad, Mr. Morris, that
your first visit to New York should
turn out to be so unpleasant fot
you," I sold. "You must hate our
fair city."
"Your fair city hasn't aroused me
to any emotion, let alone tho stren
uous one of hate. And as for your
murders, we have them In London,
loo. However, m London wo ore
permitted to Ignore them."
Jeff tossed the clippings on tho
table. "Look, Morris, why do you
act so bored by this murder?"
"I am bored. Must I be Intrigued
by the death and the attempted
murder of two American actresses
who are famous for nothing but
innr ucatn and attempted mur

celebrated his 81st birthday anni
versary at his home east of Wa
conda on the Pacific highway. Mr.
Manning was stricken with a heart
attack and was forced to remain In
bed, so the dinner and reception
planned for him was postponed.
