Active relief for local non-veteran
families has been undertaker,
during the past week was reported
by Mrs. A. J. Titus, child-welfare
chairman, with five Individuals
furnished food and other necessi
ties. Five dollars Christmas cheer
will be sent to child welfare and
hospital centers this week. Mrs.
Ernest Starr, Mrs. Sam Lorenzen
and Mrs. A. J. Titus are serving
today at the child health clinic
from the unit. Mrs. Lewis Hall op
ns her home Monday night to the
past president's club. Mrs. Ernest

the year, Phillip Schweizer, Mon
mouth, newly-elected grand patron
of the Order of the Eastern Star,
will be feted as a special guest.
Likewise the grand matron, H. Fay
Ambrose, and Arthur D. Hay, grand
master of Oregon Masons, and Mrs.
Hay will be honored.
The ball opens at 9 o'clock Fri
day evening, October 24, in the
Bhrine ballroom, Portland Masonic
temple, S. W. Parks avenue and

Perrydale Miss Marie Houk,
bride-elect, was given a miscellane
ous shower at her parents' home
Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Lorenzo
Brown, Mrs. Milton Frlnk and Mrs.
Alden Brown were hostesses for the
occasion.
The gift table was centered with
a large bowl of asters of rose pink
shades and blue delphinium. Many
lovely gifts were received by Miss
Houk. Her sister, Mrs. Andy
Schmidt, of Sacramento, Calif., as
sisted in unwrapping the gifts.

The wedding of Miss Houk and
Stanley Oellers of McMinnville will
be an event of October 18 at the

was spent Informally with games

tuberculosis seal sale campaign,
named her committee workers this
week and stated that preliminary
arrangements for the sale, to start
November 21, are well under way.
Her committee, chosen from the
Junior Woman's club, whose mem
bers are cooperating in the drive.
Include Frances Rice, Kae Hayden,
Bertha Schackmann, Alta Wilson,
Kay Bullard and Hazel Durlam.
Garden Club
Outlines Program
Hazel Green The Hazel Green
Garden club met at the home of
Mrs. Zeno Gregg with Mrs. An
drew Zahare, vice president, pre
siding over the business meeting.
The program for the coming win
ter was outlined and the program
booklets will be ready for the next
meeting. Committee In charge of
the booklets Is Mrs. Ralph Worden,
Mrs. Andrew Zahare and Mrs. Louis
Wampler. The club has resumed
the radio study club sessions and
some of the members plan taking
the flower Judging course, which
Is open to all clubs.
The next meeting will be held
at the home of Mrs. Hattie Van
Cleave Thursday, October 30, and
will be a no-host affair with a lun
cheon at noon. Mrs. Daniel Heff
ner, state president, will be present
and will speak on flower arrange
ment. Members ttre asked to bring
specimens of their chrysanthe
mums and an exchange will be made
In the spring. The flowers will be
used to make floral arrangements
by Mrs. Heffner.
Following the club meeting the
members motored to the gardens
at the Perry Henderson home and
enjoyed the choice blooms of the
chrysanthemums, numbering almost
a hundred varieties, Mrs. Marie
Perry of Elmlra, New York, was a
special guest for the afternoon.
Women of Knight Memorial
church will entertain with a fall
tea at the church Wednesday, Oc
tober 22, at 2:30 o'clock. All Inter
ested women arc invited to attend.

Junior Girls
Show Activities
Sllverton The Junior Girls Of
the American Legion auxiliary, Unit
No. 7, are showing unusual activity
in their beginning programs for
the club year, according to the re
port given at the unit meeting
Monday night by one of the advis
ors, Mrs. Clifton Dlckerson. Miss
Dorothy Towe Is president.
The younger group Is buying de
fense stamps at each meeting. They
have permission and encouragement
in distributing 100 flag codes In
the schools.
A choral group has been organ
ized and Is preparing two numbers
for the Armistice day program,
when the boys from the Sons of
Legion squadron will assist.
Miss Betty Towe and Miss Doro
thy Stump will be assisting hos
tesses for the Halloween party to be
given at the home of Miss Dorothy
Towe at Main and Second streets.
Members from the unit giving brief
talks were Mrs. Lewis Hall, telling
of the history of the national and
local auxiliary; Mrs. Sam Lorenzen,
the star of "The Star Spangled
Banner," and Mrs. Clifton Dicker
son, talking on the significance of
Navy day.
The young people attended the no
host supper with the post and unit
and contributed selections to the
program.

Rhyne were honored Sunday on the
occasion of their 40th wedding an
niversary with their daughters ar
ranging a lovely affair. .
Two guest present Sunday were
at the original ceremony In Iowa
when Bessie Jacobson became the
bride of E. M. Rhyne. The fam
ily has lived In Sllverton for
four years, coming here from
the middle west. These were a sis
ter of Mrs. Rhyne, Mrs. Alec Knut
son of Sllverton and J. Barthole

three sons and a daughter called
their parents by phone and extend
ed greetings, Orrln from Donley,
Minn., Elmer of Grand Porks, N. D.,
and Rudolph and Ruth Hartwlck,
