College Girls Set Styles
And Fashion Falls in Line
College girls take fashion dictation from nobody. And
why should they? They set styles. Back-to-school shops open
ing this month offer just exactly what the girls have asked
for classics for campus wear, full-
skirted peasant dresses for dates
(students will have none of the tap
ering silhouette), and gadgety ao
cessorles.
This year, if you're headed for
college, you'll find entertainment in
goofy gloves. Merry Hull has de
signed some you snoum nice, xncy're
of sharp-colored capeskln, In Miss
Hull's Ireefinger design, with the
edges pinked with regular pinking
shears. Good old mittens have
learned new tricks, Those called
knee-high reach up to the elbow,
for confusion. They're in heavy
cable-stitched wool, red or green.
If you liked last year's moppasins
those slippers with soles like a
mop you may like the same idea
done for your hands, plain red knit
palms, white mop backs.
Hats are about to get their turn
at bat. Even a sophomore has to
drop ' her prejudices long enough
to try out several swell new hat
notions. There's a stocking cap with
tassels, two of them, reaching down
to the waist. Also, and Sillier, there's
a stocking cap that Is Just-that, llt-

How and When
To Prepare
Spicy Vickies
Many requests have been re
ceived In regard to pickle making
and not all of the writers live in
the suburbs either. There Is no rea
son, of course, why pickles cannot
be made In the apartment house
kitchen, despite the fact that city
dwellers are not supposed to be In
terested in this.
You will believe quite the con
trary if you sniff the air filled with
that spicy scent which tells the
world that pickles are cooking.
The time to make pickles is when
you find materials plentiful In the
market. This period may be short,
so take advantage when you see
good vegetables at a low price. Don't
wait until the next week, as you
may pass up the best. This is par
ticularly true in the case of little
gherkins, as the dry spell may take
them off the market.
