Salem Blind
i Get Training
In Dramatics
New York, Jan. 21 A fresh em
phasis will be placed on dramatic
training as an Integral part of the
curriculum during the early months
of this year at the State School for
the Blind at Salem, Oregon, ac
cording to an announcement Just
made by the American Foundation
for the Blind, 15 West 16th street,
New York. This new emphasis falls
In line wtlh the view held by educa
tors of blind students that training
In acting and play production gives
to these students an added poise,
a greater confidence In movement
and speech, ana an increased sense
of assurance.
After a year's experience to prove
the validity of this contention, the
American Foundation for the Blind
the national agency through
which Helen Keller works for the
more than 200,000 blind people In
l, the United States Is sending a
' specially trained dramatic coach to
the school at Salem. This stage spe
cialist will not only coach the stud
ents themselves, nut will train one
of the school's own Instructors to
continue the courses In acting and
play production.
Miss Ruth Vivian, an experienced
actress and director, who Is now ap
pearing on Broadway in the hit
comedy, "The Man Who Came to
.pinner," has made a study of adapt
ing the usual stage techniques to
the special requirements of blind
young people who take part in
plays, and has trained the coaches
which the Foundation is sending to
schools throughout the nation. In
the case of the State School for
the Blind at Salem, the coach will
be Miss Irene Marmein, who has
had 25 years of theatrical exper
ience, and has been a member of
the directing staff of the Mohawk
Drama festival held each year In
Schenectady. .
The American Foundation for the
k Blind stresses the fact that these
' new courses which will be begun
this term In 12 selected schools
throughout the country, are not to
train the students for professional
careers on the stage, but to enable
them the more readily to overcome
certain phases of their handicap
and take their places with greater
ease and confidence in a society de
signed primarily for seeing people.
Capital Post
Gets Big Check
A check for $1250 was presented
Capital Post No. 9 of the American
Legion Monday night by the Salem
War Mothers as their contribution
to the fund for the new building by
Mrs. Minnie Humphrey, president,
who was accompanied by seven oth
er members of her organization.
The check was accepted for the post
by Ray J. Stumbo, post commander.
A .regular meeting of the post, with
routine matters considered, follow
ed a no-host dinner.
Blueprints for the remodeling of
the former Unitarian church, Cot
tage and'Chemeketa, which has been
purchased as a home for the post,
are expected to be completed this
week and as soon as approved bids
for the remodeling will be adver
tised. It Is hoped that the .building
will be ready for post meetings In
about six weeks.
