CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS bring much
gaiety to Oregon's capital, with the
younger set home from school and
many visitors In the capital. Tonight the
Spinsters Ball at the Marlon hotel holds the
limelight with many out-of-town folk expect
ed to be in attendance.
The engagement of Miss Eleanor Swift and
Roger Putnam, which was announced at an
"at home" last night at the home of Rev.
and Mrs. George H. Swift, Is evoking the
cordial interest of society.
The Salem Garden club's showing of
Christmas greens Monday at the Y.W.C.A.
will draw many out-of-towners as well as
Salem folk. Unusual arrangements are being
designed by the exhibitors.
Last-minute shopping and decorating keep
Salem matrons and maids busy when they
are not dashing from one holiday affair to
the next and Christmas week will see society
in a gay whirl of Tom and Jerry parties,
dances and dinners with "Merry Christmas"
the password. . . .

a holiday at Palm Springs and Los Angeles.

Ross-Millard
Miss Lola Millard, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Everett B. Millard, will be married at
a beautiful candlelight ceremony to Elbert
W. Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ross
of Minneapolis, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'
clock. Dr. J. c. Harrison will read the cere
mony in the Carrier room of the First Me
thodist church before relatives and friends
of the couple.
Mrs. Archie Millard of Portland, aunt of
the bride, will sing "I Love You Truly" and
"Because" Just before the ceremony and Prof.
T. S. Roberts will play the wedding music.
The altar will be decorated with artistlo
arrangements of white chrysanthemums, rosa
carnations and lighted cathedral tapers.
Mr. Millard will give his daughter in mar
riage. The bride has chosen as her wedding
gown a model of rose taffeta, fashioned with
a peplum Jacket with wide reveres and a
floor-length skirt. She will wear a blue veil
ed turban trimmed with French blue stream
ers and she will carry a nosegay of whlta
orchids, blue forget-me-nots, white and rose
bouvardla.
Miss Frances Hodge of Portland, the honor
attendant, will wear a gown of French blue
crepe fashioned with tight bodice, full skirt
and short sleeves. She will wear pearls and
a cluster of white and rose bouvardla In her
hair. Her nosegay will be of white gardenias
and rose bouvardla.
Tim BJelland of Woodburn will serve as
best man for the bridegroom and ushers will
be E. C. Ordway of Eugene, Russell Beutler
and S. W. Marsters.
Mrs. Millard will wear a striking gown of
teal blue crepe and a corsage of orchids for
her daughter's marriage.
A large reception will follow the ceremony
with members of the wedding party receiving
informally. The serving table will be covered
with a handsome lace cloth centered with
a wedding cake, and pink and white bou
vardla and white candles.
Miss Gladys Humphrey will-cut the ices
and Miss Etta White will pour. Miss Leila
Johnson and Mrs. Roy Llvesay will dispense
the wedding cake. Assisting in serving will
be Miss Ann Boentje, Miss Lillian Davis,
Miss Ruth Stover, Miss Clvilla Reeher, Miss
Jean Brlggs, Miss Mabelle Lllburn and Miss
Mary Margaret Llvesay.
Mrs. Russell Beutler will be In charge of
the guest book. Mingling with the guests will
be Miss May Rauch, Miss Beryl Holt, Miss
Margaret Rosecrans, Mrs. S. W. Marsters,
Mrs. Lew Ballantyne of Eugene, Mrs. Tim
BJelland of Woodburn, Mrs. E. C. Ordway of
Eugene and Mrs. Gilbert Fish of Clatskanie.
For going away the bride will wear a black
crepe frock trimmed with blue-green clips
and belt, a black Persian lamb coat and black
hat trimmed in Persian lamb. Her corsage
will be of orchids.
The bride attended Willamette university,
where she was a member of Beta Chi soror
ity, and was graduated from the University
of Oregon. She has travelled extensively
abroad and for the past several years has
been a member of the Parrlsh Junior high
school faculty.
Mr. Ross Is a graduate of Grlnnell college
and attended Northwestern College of Law
In Portland. He is now a consulting engineer
in Seattle.
T" ALEM SOCIETY is interested in the
announcement of the engagement of
Miss Eleanor Swift, daughter of Rev.
and Mrs. George H. Swift, and Roger Put
nam, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Putnam. The
engagement was announced Friday evening
at an "at home" given by Miss Swift at the
home of her parents in Chemeketa street
between the hours of 8 and 9:30 o'clock with
60 of the deb set calling.
Miss Swift was assisted in receiving by
her mother, Mrs. George H. Swift, and Miss
Jean Claire Swift, younger sister of the
bride-elect, greeted the guests at the door.
Lighted tapers and motifs of the Christ
mas season were arranged about the rooms
and centered the attractive serving table.
Assisting in the living room were the Misses
Doris Drager, Bobbe Shlnn and Helen Lan
gllle. Presiding at the urns were Mrs. Paul H.
Hauser, Jr., and Mrs. Roger Kellogg. Assist
ing in the serving were Miss Sybil Spears,
Miss Mary Eason and Miss Barbara Compton,
Miss Swift is one of the most attractive
and popular members of the capital's deb
set. She Is active in the Spinsters and St.
Cecelia Guild. She attended the University
of Oregon, where she was a member of
Gamma Phi Beta and Kwama.
Mr. Putnam is now stationed at Camp
Murray. He attended the University of Ore
gon, Oregon State college and Willamette
university law school.
No date has been set for the couple's marriage.
Miss Ann Ltndle and Miss Lulu Heist of
Portland will spend the holidays with Dr.
and Mrs. Carl W. Emmons at their home
in Fawk street.
Leaving Thursday for Dallas, Texas, were
Mrs. Edgar S. Fortner and her daughter.
Dr. Lucille Fortner. They will visit In San
Francisco and Palo Alto en route and will
spend the Christmas holidays In Piano,
Texas, with Mrs. A. H. Fortner.
Dr. Fortner has accepted her lnterneshlp
at the Parkland hospital In Dallas.
Air. and Mrs. E. T. Pierce will have Mrs,
Anna Becke of Aurora as their guest over
the Christmas holidays.

A gracious hostess of Thursday afternoon
was Mrs. James J. Panton, who entertained
at luncheon honoring Mrs. George A. White
of Portland, formerly of Salem. Mrs. Panton,
wearing burgundy lace, and Mrs. George
Alexander, attractive In blue crepe, received
informally with Mrs. White. A Delia Robbla
wreath over the fireplace and other Christ
mas greens were arranged in the drawing
room.
The serving table was centered with blue
balls, tinsel and silver cellophane in a foun
tain arrangement and silver candles in silver
candelabra.
Contract was in play during the afternoon
with honors going to Mrs. Homer Carpenter,
Mrs. Homer Goulet, Sr., and Mrs. U. O.
Shipley.

Members of the women's auxiliary to the
Disabled American Veterans of the World
War are entertaining their families with a
Christmas party Monday night at the Moose
hall, 12th and Leslie streets. A no-host din
ner will be served at 6:30 o'clock followed by
a program and a Christmas tree. In charge
of the Christmas party ere the child welfare,
good cheer, entertainment and decorations
committees. The Junior members are making

THE SPINSTERS Annual Christmas
Charity Ball, to be given this evening
from 10 to 1 o'clock, is one of the
stellar events of the holiday season. The
dance will be held In the Mirror and Marine
rooms of the Marion Hotel and both rooms
will be open to dancing. Small tables will be
arranged along the walls, decorated with
Christmas greens and candles. Roger Mil
ler's orchestra will play.
The president of the Spinsters organiza
tion is Mary Ellen Hammond, and the vice
president and chairman of the dance is
Shirley Evenson. Proceeds of the dance will
go to the various charities the Spinsters are
supporting.
Many of the university contingent will
attend, and a number of out-of-town guests
are expected. Several affairs are being plan
ned before the dance.

Mrs; Harry V. Collins, who returned re
cently from an extended stay in the east,
had the pleasure of meeting two Interna
tionally famous musicians, Maurice Elsen
berg, cellist, and Percy Grainger, Australian
concert pianist and composer.
Mr, Oralnger played in Salem several years
ego and was honored at a reception given by
Mrs. Charles H. Martin. He remembered
having met Mrs. Collins at the affair. Mr,
Elsenberg, whom Mrs. Collins met on the
train coming from New England, Invited her
to listen to one of his dally practices.

Jtt- CHARMING EVENT of the Chrlst
O0I mas season will be the showing of
S -UL Christmas greens and unusual yule
tide decorations, which will be shown by the
Salem Garden club at the Y.W.C.A. in State
iVeet Monday, starting at 3 o'clock In the
afternoon. The showing of Christmas decora
tions is the third annual exhibit to be given
by the Salem Garden club. The first Christ
mas show was held at the old Patton man
sion and last year's show was given at the
Salem Art Center.
The rooms of the Y.W. headquarters will
make a splendid background for the show.
It is one of Salem's oldest houses, being 7S
years old. It was once the Methodist parson
age when Rev. J. C. Wise lived there. The
house has been remodeled twice, first by
Mrs. Charles Gray and later by John 3.
Roberts, who sold the property to the Y.W.
Unique and interesting greens will be
shown at Monday's exhibit including bay
branches, from a tree many years old; Jun
iper from central Oregon, cedar of Lebanon;
Armenian cypress, hemlock, sweet scented
cedar, pine, spruce and holly,
A committee from the Garden club haa
made 20O individual corsages to be given to
those In attendance. A voice, violin and piano
trio, composed of Frances Shlsler, Florence
Skang and William Putnam, will present a
program at 4:30 o'clock and at 8 o'clock the
Girl Reserves will sing carols. The show will
close at 9 o'clock.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gerlinger and their
young daughters, Barbara Jean and Carol
Lee, will be In Dallas Christmas eve as sup
per guests of Mr. Gerllnger's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Carl Gerlinger.
