Lebanon Purchase of SO-acre
tract bordering the South Santlam
river for a park site was consum
mated by the city council in a meet
ing Tuesday night. Funds for the
purchase had been allocated In the
1940 budget, but the deal was held
In aboyance pending evidence that
the acreage, owned by the Moun
tain States Power company, was
clear of encumbrances. The price
was $2000.
Closing of the deal will permit
Immediate development of the site
by an NYA project, which has al
ready started clearing work. Devel
opment plans will be drafted by
classes In the NYA school in Eu
gene. The site Is hailed by Chester
Nelson of the state NYA office as
offering the best possibilities for
park of any In Oregon.
Necessity of purchasing property
for a new dumping ground was
brought to the council's attention,
and Bfter deliberation, the matter
was turned over to the public prop,
ertv committee.
The city recorder was Instructed
to secure descriptions of property
benefitting In the paving program
ao that assessment notices may be
mailed and data completed for sale
' of city bonds. The recorder will get
the descriptions in the county
. aessor's office.
The council turned down a pro
, posal to allow bowling on Sunday
here.

Louis Simon, who has been In the
Willamette hospital at Newberg for
the past month, was able to be
moved to his home.

vary Lutheran church, O. O. Olson,
pastor, at 10:30 a.m. with the topic
of "Supplications, prayers, and giv
ing of thanks, be made for all men"
and special music by the choir.
Rev. J. M. Jcnson, of the Im
manuel Lutheran church held their
Thanksgiving services at 10 o'clock.
Rev. M. J. K. Fulir and the Trin
ity Lutheran church observed
Thanksgiving day between 10:30
and 11:30 Thursday morning. At
this time a special offering was
lifted for the needy widows of Into
pastors of the church.
Mrs. Wray Makes Trip

to accompany her son and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wray, and
Rollle to Gresham for Thanksgiving
dinner at the home of Mrs. Frank
Wray's parents and brother. Mr.
and Mrs. William PIcKoll and Rich
ard PlcKcll. PIcKoll. Jr., was a
teacher In tho local schools for a
number of years and Is now of the
Gresham school system. Mrs. Lucy
Wray will be at the Talbot home of
her granddaughter, the Jack Nor
ton (Muriel Webb), for a fortnight
following Thanksgiving.

Favors Meeting

meeting of Tuesday evening fea
tured the question of retaining the
Sllverton airport as a private land
ing, federal school and emergency
landing project, with Dr. P. A. Loar
In charge of the session at the
Chamber of Commerce rooms.
Alf. O. Nelson, chairman of the
planning council airport committee,
appeared for R. B. Duncan, past
president of the Chamber of Com
merce, telling of the civil aeronaut
ics school now being conducted at
the airport. J. B. Anderson repre
sented the flying club of Sllverton
and Lee Morrison caretaker of the
airport for a number of years, gave
an Inclusive history of the port.
The airport committee recom
mended as follows:
That a permanent airport com
mission be created to consist of the
mayor and two members from each
of the Sllverton and Mt. Angel city
councils. Also, a citizen attorney
advisory committee made up of the
heads of civic groups in these two
cities, and that the Sllverton cham
ber of commerce, as the logical
organization to sponsor the organiz
ing meeting, invite representatives
from the two city governments and
representatives from civic organ
izations and other interested citi
zens.
Red Cross Sewing
Needs More Women
Woodburn More , women are
needed at the Red Cross sewing room
where work Is being done for the
destitute people over seas. The sewing
meeting Is held every Friday after
noon at 1 o'clock, at the auxiliary
rooms In the city hall.
The Red Cross drive In on In full
force and the workers are meeting
with a generous response. Those In

made a deal with the S.P. whereby
they have bought 40 feet of the Tur
ner depot. They have started tearing
it down and moving It.
Rev. Jones and family are plan
ning on spending Thanksgiving day
with their son, Paul, near Bend.
Mr. Rlcker has rented the Vera
Dow house and expects to move In
by December 1.

little girl arrived in time to help
celebrate his father's birthday Sun
day. Dow has been employed In eas
tern Oregon.
Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Jeffreys spent
Thanksgiving with Mrs. Jeffreys'

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Jones and
two sons, Walter Lee and Dale, of
Salem, were guests at the R. Jones
home, on the south side of town.

entertained recently at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Morton in Tal
bot. The two women became ac
quainted while botli were patients
in the hospital about a year ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Don KUllnger, who
have hod rooms In the William Hain
es house for a short time, have
moved to Aumsvllle where they have
bought lots and expect to build.
They have already purchased new
furniture.
The Maurice Nelson family has
moved from the Ludwlg house to
Aumsvllle. Harold Squires will move
his family Into the house vacated
by the Nelsons.
The John Regler family Is expect
ing Mr. and Mrs. John Mcrkle to
spend Thanksgiving day with them.

holders are to be taken up,
Annual stockholders' meeting in
this city Saturday night heard of
ficial reports, and the business of
the company was reviewed. The
conference was held ln VFW hall,
notice of which had been given to
stockholders several days ln advance
of the meeting.
Board of directors for the ensuing
year consists of G. H. Coover, Port-
land, David Schrock, Tangent, Cyrus
Peery, Joe Boyanovsky and Murrel
Gllkey, Scio. The latter Is the only
new member elected this year.
Play Series
Offered Club
Middle Grove The November
meeting of the senior community
club was held at the school with a
large crowd ln attendance. The pro
gram for the evening was under the
direction of the club president, Mrs.
Cleo Keppinger. Local talent pre
sented three one-act comedies
which have been under rehearsal for
the past two months with Mrs. Hen
ry Chrlstmann, head coach, assisted
by Mrs. Louis Brown and Mrs. John
Cage.
The first play "She Doted on Lob
ster" had as Its leading characters
Wlllard Grant and Lee Wagers, with
Miss Carol Snyder playing the femi
nine lead. Others in the cast were
Mrs. Louis Brown, Earl Malm, Gary
Keppinger and John Van Laanen.
An all-male play entitled "The
Name Is Johnston" with Ted Kuen
zi and John Cage ln the leading
roles was a hilarious bit of fun. Oth
ers ln the cast were Wlllard Grant,
Fred LaCombe and John Van Laa
nen. "Sauce for the Gosling" was well
acted by the entire cast of Robert
Wagers, Daryl Colwel, Mary Farn
ham, Clyde Chrlstmann, Phebe Wa
gers and Genevieve Scharf.
Musio during Intermissions was
played by Mrs. Dan Scharf. The
Swegle girls' Instrumental quartet,
consisting of Donna Starr, accord-
Ion; Gladys Dalke, guitar; Margaret
Smith, violin, and O'Delma Lake,
played a group of musical numbers.
The local Junior Community club's
quartet Is Edrls Van Cleave, Bar
bara Warneke and Thelma Polzel.
Caroyl Snyder gave a number of vo
cal selections,

Funds derived from the small ad
mission charge will go into the club
treasury and will help defray the
expense of the serving of hot lunch
es which Is one of the projects the
olub la maintaining. The lunches
have been served for several weeks
with a WPA cook, Mrs. Margaret
Warren In charge. Donations have
been numerous by parents and
friends.

Klamps Return from Trip
Through Billiard; Residence
Changes Are Reported
Mr. and Mis. Alfred Klamp have
returned from an absence of seven
weeks, during which they visited
relatives In South Dakota, Minne
sota and Iowa. They were in the
recent blizzard ln Minnesota and
Iowa, and Mr. Klamp stated it
seemed like home. They made the
trip by train.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hlgglnbothem
have moved to the Gordon Klamp
residence, Just east of the city
limits on the Mt. Angel road, and
the Klamps have moved to the
residence vacated by the Hlggon-
bothams at 1100 Hardcastle avenue
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Klamp have
moved to the hunt property at (31
Garfield street, recently vacated by
the Clarence Hammett.
Dr. and Mrs, L. G. Soderholm
and Larry are leaving Friday to
spend the week-end with relatives
at Bremerton, Wash.
Norman Richards of Portland
visited Woodburn on business Tues
day and Wednesday. .

Hazel Green Students of the lo
cal school have' completed the first
Issue of the school paper, "School
Echoes." Enough copies are printed
to allow one for each family ln the
community and the paper is Issued
each month. Betty Gregg is editor;

Star reporters were elected to
serve for each grade, first, Arnold
Wagner; second, Helen Scholtz;
third, Patsy Hynes; fourth, Anyce
Klampe; fifth, Lorene Lowery;
sixth, Barbara Kobow; seventh, Hol
land Van Cleave, and eighth. Eu
gene Harp.
The pupils do all the work neces
sary for the issuing of each paper.
They are responsible for the collect
ing and selection of Items and the
mimeographing. This Is considered
as part of the English work for each
class. Last year the paper consisted
of two sheets. This year the size
has trebled and consequently the
work of assembling each Issue is no
small task.

Has Initiation
Dollas Four candidates were Ini
tiated Into the rank of page in a
special ceremony conducted by Avon
Lodge No. 03, Knights of Pythias,
at St. Helens Tuesday night by
John L. Foote. a past grand chan
cellor of the order. Two of the can
didates were from Dallas, Paul Fran
zen and John Delzell, and they were
accompanied by a strong delegation
from Marmton Lodge No. 96.
The visit to St. Helens by the
local lodge was hi return for a
trip made here by the St. Helens
group earlier this fall when Avon
lodge paid a losing bet ln a mmid
bershlp contest by providing the;
salmon for a banquet held here at
that time. Tuesday night Marmlon
lodge took along a huge prune cake
baked especially for the occasion by
Mrs. Mabel Kracher, and presented
it to their hosts ln the course of
the evening.
Making the trip were Elwyn Cra
ven, Walter Young, Fred West,
Glenn Holt, Delbert Hunter, Jack
Lalng, Bill Blackley, Melvln Miller,
Al Lynch, Donald Gabbert, Howard
Conkle, Paul Franzen and John
Delzell.
Dos Patterson, who Is the super
intendent of the Oregon-Washington
Pythian home ln Vancouver,
and Floyd Moore of Portland, both
members of Marmlon lodge, also
made the trip.
Sheriff's Office Busy
Dallas Deputy Sheriff W. W.
Williams arrested Gordon Akers of
Dallas Tuesday of this week on a
charge of assault and battery. Akers
was arraigned ln justice court and;
bound to the grand Jury and re
leased on his own recognizance. '
Ted Tox of Independence, Indicted
by the grand Jury on a charge of
burglary not ln a dwelling, will
stand trial ln circuit court Friday.
New Pupils Enrolled
Pratum Two new pupils are en
rolled at Pratum school, Melvln Be
thel ln the fourth grade, and Dwain
Bethel ln the third. They came here
from Willow Dale school ln Colorado
and are living ln the Albert Gerlg
house with their parents.
