Eoes to Beachport to Interview the fam

Chapter 10
Dairy Farm
"Sooo," Dolores exhaled with gus
to, "they come and soon young Pe
dro he come Xrom the school mill
talre In Texas, and very happy
they are with moch work and moch
climate.
"Always they speak of when they
go back to thees Texas, then the
senora's heart, she quit, sudden, two
year ago. Now, say the senoir Tay
lor, to Texas we go. Only now they
have like El Cabrlllo better than
Texas, so then they sell the rancho
what they have in that panhandle
. . . Senorlta Conchlta, how does
one have the rancho In the pan
handle?"
Constance answere vaguely. "The
panhandle Is a section of Texas,
so called because of the shape of
the state on the map."
She was thinking, this accounts
for their money. They've had an
income from their home ranch.
They could have bought and sold
the Cabrillos anytime.
Only why did they have to have
El Cabrlllo? There must be other
ranches In the same vicinity. Why
try to rob the Cabrillos?
Gradually she worked up an ang
er at Pedro's attitude. The tone
he'd used when he suggested she
could not find money for her very
own ranch. His superior attitude,
He'd acted as though he were the
host and she a mere guest, while
in reality she was his employer.
Mln's Tim's engine boiled into
Beachport. Constance was sur
prised to find such a thriving little
city. It sprawled out over the sand
flats to wharves and industries edg
ing the bay, then crept back up Into
the hills in attractive homes.
A passing logging train blocked
their way. Constance saw nothing
In the great hewn lengths moving
past on flat cars, to point to her
future. She only wisnca tney wouia
move more quickly.
In town she located the court
house, and across the green found
a building and Judge Pranck's of
fice. Yes, he would see her if she!
would be brief.
Constance stiffened with resent
ment. He'd been retained by the
Cabrillos since he was out of law
school. No one had bothered him
since her father's time, and now
. . . she must be brief. She won
dered if he too had received a tele
gram. "Sit down, Miss Cabrlllo," said
the secretary, after taking her Into
the Judge.
Constance was conscious of the
Judge staring at her. She stared
right back. He had the appearance
of an ancient tree in that rumpled
gray suit. His skin was like the
November leaf of an elm, yellow
and dry. She wondered if it would
crumble if she touched It.
"What brings you here?"
Constance jumped at the ques
tion. There was nothing old about
his voice; It cracklca with vitality.
"I don't Intend sitting clear across
the room here so you can shout
your answers to the world," Con
stance Informed him.
"Answers, answers! ME give an
swers?" "Definitely yes. I'm Constance
Cabrlllo and I Intend to know all
you know about the 13 Cabrlllo
situation before I leave this of
fice." The old man leaned forward and
stared anew. "You are no Cabrlllo,"
he said. "No. I've known three gen
erations of them. Courtesy, that's
what a Cabrlllo gives you; old world
courtesy, all excepting Bridget, but
then she wasn't born a Cabrlllo.
"Ah. but she was a woman." His
voice faded and slowed as he rose
and came across to Constance.
"That's it . . . that's what you are
. . . a Mahoney. put some meat on
those bones of yours . . . what did
5'ou say your given name was?"
"All light," agreed Constance,

wearily, "I'm no Cabrlllo. I'm the
old Mick done over in skirts. In
other words, Judge, I'm a throw
back." Judge rranck pounded the arm
of her chair and roared. "Well,
bless my soul and body, a throw
back; a Cabrlllo who turned into a
Mick; come on close to my desk.
There child, sit down; now tell me
again, what is your name?"
"Call me Michael," suggested Con
stance. "Pine. Now, Michael, tell me all
about yourself. I think I might give
you the answers. By gad, girl, It's
good to see you. I suppose you came
out to iee about selling the ranch.
Well, sir, you couldn't do better
than sell to the Taylors. Fine men,
both of them, and they've named
you a fair price."
"I have no intention of selling El
Cabrlllo ranch."
Until Constance heard her own
voice, she had not realized how
firmly she had reached this deci
sion. "If the Taylors can find a wav
to may money out of somebody
else's property, then a Cabrlllo who

The afternoon waxed and the aft
ernoon waned. Constance pounded
one side of the desk and the Judge
pounded the other. And then, when
they were both tired, the Judge
paced te room and held a lengthy
verbal argument with himself.
"Michael," he came to a stop
before her, "you could talk me into
giving a kidnaper a suspended sen
tence." "Meaning?" Constance kept the
triumph out of her voice.
Judge Franck sat down heavily.
"There Is no ethical reason why I
shouldn't tell you what I know.
There is a moral reason. The Tay
lor's plans are generally known;
however, there isn't a man in this
country who wouldn't keep' them
from an outsider."
"And a cabrlllo is an outsider?"
asked Constance.
"The present generation of Ca
brillos are outsiders," affirmed the
Judge. "The Taylors have won the
right to be natives by their integ
rity; their untiring efforts to put
another family's ranch on a pay
ing basis.
