To The Editor: The picture of
Miss Jean Hoss in the Woman's sec
tion of our favorite paper on Thurs
day evening arouses a reminiscent
mood in the minds of the old tim
ers out at the state house of the
time when this charming young
lady's father, the late Hal E. Hoss,
was secretary of state in the "old
capitol building." Many have been
the voluntary tributes to his mem
ory this week.
Everyone speaks of his very hu
man Interest in his employes and of
his strolls through the offices, stop
ping to chat at the desks of the va
rious employes, for he knew them
all knew their families and when
or If any of them were in trouble.
One employe especially mentions
the fact that he organized a "Self
Bcttermcnt Society" and conducted
these meetings in a vacant room at
the state house each week. He urged
all employes to feel free to attend
and would lead the meetings, call
ing on various people for impromp
tu speeches, encouraging them to
better themselves in public speak
ing and to be ready at all times to
speak on any subject that might
come up. Another spoke of the
spelling bees which he also conduct
ed, sensing that a competitive atti
tude on this subject was beneficial
to all concerned and much merri
ment often resulted when some one
"went down" on a seemingly simple
word.
Others spoke of the lnter-office
ball games, the picnics to which the
employes took the whole family. Hal,
as he was known to all, kept these
customs alive as long as he was in
office. He had a great love for all
humanity and many have spoken of
his personal contacts and interest
in his employes and associates. He
was noted for his dry sense of hu
mor and beloved by all who knew
him. One expression of his dry wit
which still exists is "Hal's Half
Acre" over at Taft, which Is now
the family home of Mrs .Hoss and
the "young Hosses" as Hal affec
tionately called his, at that time,
very young family.
Miss Jean's marriage would have
given her father great pleasure for
he was always a "family man." The
fact that she is an active member
of the Young Republican club shows
that she is a living tribute to her
father and another "good old Hoss,"
and would have given keen delight
to her father. It Is also Interesting
to note that Mrs. Hoss Is the re
publican nominee for treasurer of
Lincoln county.

in the book of the prophet Daniel
in the 11th chapter.
The 36, 37, 38th verses, definitely
and perfectly describe the charac
teristics of a Hitlerite.
Verse 39 reveals what he has ac
complished with his "god of forces."
"He shall cause them to rule over
many, and shall divide the land for
gain."
Verse 44, "Tidings out of the east
fjapan's move in Indo-China) and
out of the north, (Russia, massing
troops on the Rumanian border and
In the Black Seal shall trouble him,
therefore he shall go forth with
great fury to destroy (England) and
utterly make away many (countries
that stand in his way, on Ills march
Into Turkey, as revealed in the 41st
verse)." "He shall enter also Into
the glorious land (Turkey) and many
countries shall bo overthrown, but
thene shall escape, Edom, Moab and
Ammon." (Rumania, Hungary and
Bulgaria).
The 45th verse reveals, "And he
shall plant the tabernacles of his
palace (military forces) between the
(Black and Mediterranean) seas, in
the glorious holy mountain, (In
Turkey) yet he sail come to his end,
and none shall help him."
The 40th verse reveals who the
"none shall help him" Is. "And at
the time of the end (of the German
army In Turkey) shall the king of
south (Mussolini) push at him and
the king of the north (Stalin) shall
come against him like a whirlwind,
with chariots and with horsemen
and with many ships (Russian ships
in the Black Sea)."
Thus Hitlerlsm ends, "in the val
ley of decision," see Joel 3rd chap
ter, i4tn verse.

To the Editor In the election on
November 5 the average citizen and
voter will be required to make some
Important decision. Since the im
portance of political parties in this
campaign has been quite extensively
reduced, the main problem before
the voter is in the selection of the
proper persons to fill the various
offices. How is a voter going to de
termine which candidates are to
receive his vote?
The first and most . Important
quaimcation of a candidate for pub
lic office is his morality. Ask these
questions: Is he honest; is he truth
ful, frugal, thrifty, ctratgtforward,
considerate of others; does he al
ways adhere to the side which he
believes to be right?
Next to determine the, fitness of
the candidate to perform the duties
of the office he seeks, Inquire as to
his education, training and previous
experience, the amount deemed
necessary depending on the nature
of the office involved.
The above applies to all offices
As to the policy forming offices, in
which the incumbent is given broad
discretionary powers in determin
ing and directing the course and
conduct of public affairs, another
matter needs to be considered.
What principles or philosophy are
likely to determine the candidate's
course of action after he assumes
office?
The only federal officers, who
the people will elect in November
and who will directly determine the
course of the nation from the first
of the year are: President, vice
president, U. S. senators- and con

Because complaint Is being made
that congress has delegated too
many of Its powers to the presi
dent and because of the grave con
ditions existing In the world today
it becomes doubly Important at this
time to elect strong, conscientious
men of ability to congress as well
as a man who possesses these qual
ities to fill the office of president.
Thus a great responsibility rests
on each Individual citizen. And how
is he to meet this obligation? Just
a few suggestions which may be
helpful; spend as much time as
you can between now and election
day In thought and in gathering
Information; find out all that you
can concerning every candidate
from the highest to the lowest,
along the lines suggested; listen to
their speeches and statements and
also find out what you can as to
their previous performances. After
you have gathered as many facts as
you can, rely largely on your own
personal judgment based on the
facts. However, beware of speecnes,
articles and statements, chiefly de
signed to produce prejudice In the
mind. Prejudice warps the judg
ment and more than likely a wrong
decision will be made. Do not vote
for a person just because he Is a
friend and needs a Job, unless he is
also the best qualified person for
the position. By all means do not
fail to vote because you cannot find
a candidate who meets all the re
quirements or your Ideal, but vote
for the person wno comes nearest
to it.

1 lb. chopped veal (economy cut)
cup dried bread crumbs
1 teaspoon chopped ontonr
teaspoon salt
Mi teaspoon paprika
teaspoon celery seed .
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons fat
4 cups water
Mix veal, crumbs and seasonings.
Shape in eight balls, roll in flour
and brown in fat melted in a pan.
Add half of water and a lid. Cook
over moderate heat for 10 minutes;
add other water and dumplings.
Cover tightly and boil 10 minutes.

Mix ingredients lightly and drop

In Jefferson
Jefferson Tne Evangelical church
in Jefferson was the scene of a pret
ty wedding Saturday afternoon at
3 o'clock when Miss Laura Kihs,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Karl
Kihs of Jefferson, became the bride
of Sherman Hoffstetter of Pratum,
Autumn leaves and baskets of au
tumn flowers banked the altar of
the church, where Rev. William El
mer, pastor of the church, read
the service in the presence of the
two families and close friends of
the couple.
Preceding the ceremony Mrs. Wil
liam Elmer sang "O Promise Me,"
and "O Love that Will Not Lot
Me Go." Mrs. J. T. Jones played
the accompaniment and wedding
march.
The bride was charming in a floor
length gown of white celanese taf
feta. The front of the tight-fitting
bodice was shirred with tiny
blue bows down the front. Her
finger-tip tulle veil fell from a
wreath of orange blossoms and she
carried her mother's wedding hand
kerchief and a nosegay of gardenias
and roses.
Miss Helen Kihs was her sister's
only attendant and she wore a floor
length dress of blue net and car
ried a nosegay of shaded pink as
ters. Adrian Hoffstetter served as' best
man for his brother; .
Following the ceremony a recep
tion was held at the country home
of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs,
Karl Kihs. The serving table was
centered with the bride's cake, flank
ed with tall white tapers and bowls
of asters,
Mrs. Lauren Stettler, sister of the
bride, cut the cakes, and assisting
in serving the Ices and cake were
Ann Henrickson, Elma Potter, Hel
en Novak of Salem and Bernlce My
ers of Albany. Mrs. George Kihs
was in charge of the gifts.
Mrs, Hoffstetter graduated from
the Jefferson high school and is
popular among the young people of
the community.
After spending a few days at the
beach, the young couple will live
near Pratum, where Mr. Hoffstet
ter is engaged in farming.
For going away Mrs. Hoffstetter
chose a wine colored suit and black
accessories.
