I Yeelerdaj: Ths quarantine Is Mtad and
r lh Tolands reluctantly depart. They
have had a wonderful time. Aunt Han
nah aayn she Intends lo change her will,
and Toml la convinced Allen's charm la
working against her.
Chapter 26
Red Ink
"No-no." unified Toml, "not that
I know of. But don't you see what
an Influence he has over people?
Two weeks with the Tolands and
ha turned them from stuffed shirts
to utter idiots."
"And without me having ft chance
at them," exclaimed Pierre.
"What?" burst from Toml.
"I mean," Pierre hastened to say,
"that I could have mitigated his In
fluence." "Umhuh," agreed Toml, "but they
did have a wonderful time."
Mrs. Dorothy Dougherty return
ed that evening. She greeted Toml
ruefully. "To think I was cheated
out of the quarantine," she cried.
"Cheated," echoed Toml. "But
you didn't like the Tolands."
I "I hadn't had time to learn what
J a grand gang they were. Allen says
they're tops."
"Tops," repeated Toml. "Allen
said that?"
Dotty nodded and Toml disap
peared to digest it. Of course, she
thought In sudden understanding.
The Tolands were wealthy. Allen
would probably come out of this
quarantine with ft million-dollar ac
count to his credit.
Oh, Plerrel Pierre's shoulder was
such a restful place to lean a weary
head.
Toml debated telling Pierre what
had happened.
Great-aunt Hannah hadn't of
fered to nay the expenses of the 14
guests and the nurse. She, Toml
Toland,, who had had to watch even
the state's sales tax with an eagle
eye, must defray them; let ft whole
battalion of little red figures her
ald a victory over the black army
she had tried so hard to entrain to
.the battle front.
r""Allen put her up to It," she
'thought. "He showed her how that
would help cheat me of my heri
tage. She's like he is, only differ-
ent. She wants me to lose because
I violated a principle of the To
lands."
How could Uie world be so beau
tiful and hold such monsters in it?
How could that silly moon shed
such radiance on roses, draw dis
tilled perfume from night bloom
ing stock, silver the old house, ana
yet make Allen Bartcll look as
though he had been formed only to
add luster to his hair and laughter
to his eyes.
Pierre drew her closer, pressed
his lips to her brow. She wondered
why she was glad his Hps had
stopped at her brow.
For two days Toml, Abe and
Pierre sought to bring order out of
the chaos the Tolands had left.
Late on the afternoon of the
fourth day, Toml, who had been
laboring over her books trying to
make the black army stand up on
I Its hind legs and face the red army,
retreated to her room to stretch on
the chaise lounge In defeat.
"Hoo-hoo," came a sound through
the front window.
Toml frowned. Probably ft hoot-
owl who'd lost his clock and was
singing in the daylight.
"Hoo-hoo. Toml." It came again
Hoot owls don't sing Toml, she
decided, and sat up to look out of
the window, A woman stood at
the front gate, a beautifully gown
ed woman In a rose-beige suit, a
smart hat. There was an Alameda
cab waiting beside her.
Toml went downstairs, puzzled.
It might be Mrs. Bartell, though
she had gone to Allen's prune
ranch early In April
Swiftly she went to the front
gate. The woman looked familiar
Her hair was shorts waved, she
Imagined. Or was that a perma
nent which showed under the
smart hat? Beautiful complexion,
pink cheeks, a touch of mascarB
on the evelashes.
Toml turned her head sideways

Great-aunt Hannah beamed. "I
put myself in the hands of one of
those rejuvenators and told her to
give me the works," she announced.
Toml clung to the gate for sup
port.
We're staying here," Oreat-aunt
Hannah went on. "We can't come
in on your property without violat
ing that ridiculous will of Timo
thy's so I had Allen buy us a
house. Nicer view than yours,
Toml. It's at tile end of one of those
streets that Jump Into the bay,
so I can have my sun baths."
B-but, Aunt Hannah," she gasp
ed. "Chicago your interest there?"
"Oh, tush," Great-aunt Hannah
disposed of the mld-weslern me
tropolis and her Interest in one
sentence: "I've turned everything
over to Allen."
Allen had scored agalnl "Aunt
Hannah " Toml sounded like Han
nah Toland of Chicago "do you
realize what you are doing?"
"Perfectly," came the affable re
tort. "You've turned goodness knows
how much money over to a man of
whom you know nothing. Why?"
"Money?" came pertly from Han
nah. "I've had money ever since
1 was knee-high, and what has
It brought me? Responsibility, I
couldn t marry because I had to
keep an eye on the money. I could
n't live humanly because I had to
see the money was properly spent,
so the Tolands could live properly
Well, damn the Tolands. Prom now
on I am going to live, and if I
spend every cent so that the sec
ond generation has to get out and
dig ditches, I'll feel I've done my
bit for posterity I"
Toml's face expressed ft queer
mixture of fear and approbation
She felt like cheering, and she felt
like weeping.
"Darling" she laid an affec
tionate hand on her aunt's arm
"It isn't that I'm not too happy for
words that you're going to live out
here and that you're going to enjoy
living for a change. It's It's Allen
Bartell.
"Don't you see, Aunt Hannah?
You did at first. You were the
first one to accuse him of Influenc
ing Great-uncle Timothy to write
such ft crazy will. And the Major,
right In court, declared you folks
were bringing a contest of the will
because Allen had handled it In
such a way the place would even
tually revert to him."
Great-aunt Hannah called to the
cab driver and stepped Into the cab
She lowered the window and looked
at her grandnlece.
"My dear child," she said, "any
one who can Influence a Toland to
do anything a Toland doesn't want
to do is worth cultivating. Brooks,
she spoke to the driver, "take me
back to Alameda where I'm allowed
to have a mind of my own."
Brooks, the Alameda taxi and
Miss Hannah Toland. late of Chi
cago, left Toml Toland standing
on the roadside in a cloud of their
dust.
"You look exactly like ft hen who's
hatched a duck," remarked Dorothy
Dougherty, coming down the road
from the mall-box. "Who was your
visiting dowager?"
"The duck," said Toml thought
fully. "And I do feel Just like a
hen standing on the shore watching
my newly hatched foundling take
off Into deep waters."
And the worst of It was, she
thought, as she went again to her
office, she had exposed Aunt Han
nah to Allen. She should have
made Bartell stay on his property
and tne Tolands on theirs
Toml went into a huddle with
her accounts. If she sold as manv
frogs In the last half of the sea
son as she sold In the first, she
would fall short of her quota three
thousand dollars.
"Why didn't I wait until winter
to expand?" she cried. Irritably. "Of
course, next season I'd reap the
benefits, but It looks as though I
might not be here next season.
