day at the new $155,000 building
completed this fall and recently ded
icated. The first class of two wafl
graduated in 1908. E .E. Washburn
was principal and graduates were
Dick Down and Gertrude Walcott.
Miss Elma Hutton, outstanding
student, is chairman of plans and
is to be assisted by the Plenus
Vitus club which serve aa guides
about the rooms and places of in
terest in the new set-up.

the streets to remind grads of the
occasion.
Pratum School Club
Names New Officers
Pratum Club officers for the
fourth month of Pratum school are:
President, Julia Jenson; secretary,
Winona Dillard; substitute, Clayton
Wenger; playground inspector, Em
elia Welkum. Officers for next week
are: duster, Marvin Jenson; black
board committee, Winona Dillard
and Ruth Oeuse.
The community club program for
Friday is under the direction of
Miss Orace Klampe, and a good
program is being prepared. Everyone
is welcome to attend the program.
Refreshments will be served after
the program with Mrs. Walter Beut
ler as chnirman of the refreshment
committee.

night when they presented the can
tata, "Bethlehem" with Roy Rutch
man as choir director and Mrs. Clar
ence Herr at the piano. Rev. Franz
was reader in the cantata.
The Sunday school program will

Santa Claus Visits
Woodburn Saturday
Woodburn Santa Claus will ar
rive in Woodburn Saturday after
noon ot 2 o'clock and will make his
headquarters In the fire truck which
will be parked in the alley opposite
the postofflce. All children In Wood
burn and vicinity are Invited to be
present and receive a package of
candy and fruit. Children will enter
the alley on Oront street and pass
through north to West Lincoln.

Xmas Program
Mt. Angel Children of the Mt.
Angel post and unit as well as their
elders had a joyous Christmas
party in the Memorial hall Tues
day night. Mrs. Frank Walker, dis
guised as Santa Claus, distributed
large bags of candy, nuts, oranges,
and a balloon to the children and
delighted everyone with amusing
antics.
The program was under the super
vision of the Auxiliary Juniors,
funds for the children's gifts being
raised by them by the disposal of
on electric toaster donated by Mrs.
Anna Schnider. The toaster was won
by Mrs. Fred Lucht.
The suggestion was advanced by
the local commander that the le
gion and auxiliary hold a New
Year's party on January 31. Mrs.
Tony Miller, president of the aux
iliary, appointed Mrs. Fred Lucht,
Mrs. Cletus Butsch, Mrs. John
Greisenauer, and Mrs. Fred Prosser
to meet with a committee of the
legionnaires to discuss the matter
and make plans.
Commander Walker decreed that
members be permitted to bring non
member friends.
The crowd gathered in the base
ment dining hall at 7 p. m. for a
no-host supper. Assisting with the
serving were Mrs. Mae Heggi, Mrs.
Tony Miller, Mrs. Anna Lenners,
Mrs. Fred Prosser, and Mrs. Cletus
Butsch. Decorations of holly added
a Christmas note to the feast.
After a mass singing of "Silent
Night," with accompaniment on the
piano by Miss Helen Keber, the

Legion Holds Party
Lebanon Santiam post and aux
iliary of the American Legion held
their annual Christmas party in
the Legion hall Tuesday night, with
the men hosts to the ladles. It was
the largest turnout of the year.
Each Auxiliary member was pre
sented with a gift. Music was sup
plied by Nancy Anne Klrkpatrick
and Had Reeves, who sang a duet
and solos accompanied by Dorothy
Bohle. A community sing was also
held.
Pupils Are Presented
Lebanon Miss Irene Moore pre
sented four voice pupils in a recital
at the Presbyterian church Tuesday
night. Those appearing were Doro
thy Grable, Mary Fredricks, and
Nancy Klrkpatrick, sopranos, and
Harold Reeves, tenor. All sang sev
eral solos and Miss Kirkpatrick
and young Reeves sang a duet.

Middle Grove The Christmas
program sponsored by the Commun
ity club and presented under the
direction of the teachers, Miss El
verta Minton, principal, and Mrs.
Edna Grant, primary instructor, will
be given at the schoolhouse Friday
night at 8 o'clock.
The upper grades will be heard
in an operetta, "The Whole World's
Christmas Tree," featuring carols
and Christmas customs in many
lands. Some special music for this
operetta was composed by Felix
French of Salem. The primary grad
es will give two plays with special
musical numbers.
Following the program David
Bartruff, head of the upper grade
citizenship organization, will bring
greetings from the school and report
on the work of the Junior Red Cross
and the result of the bangle sales
in school.

First Prisoner
In Linn Jail
Facing Murder
Albany Rufus A. Stults, facing a
first degree murder charge, received
the doubtful distinction late Wed
nesday of being the first prisoner
lodged In the new Linn county Jail.
The jail is completed, with only
minor adjustments being made to
doors yesterday, preparatory to fi
nal acceptance of the steel and con
crete penthouse.
Stults was brought again before
Justice of the Peace Victor Olllver
Wednesday for resumption of his
preliminary hearing, but he was still
without legal counsel so Judge Olli-
ver appointed Edward Sox and Mel
vin Goode to represent him in Jus
tice court.
Judge Olllver continued the hear
ing to give the attorneys opportun
ity to investigate the case.

gon State college senior, Wednesday
became the second CAA student pll
lot In Oregon to "solo" in an air
plane, Perman, student of Howard
Burleson, made a perfect landing at
the Albany airport Wednesday at
the conclusion of his first solo trip

Scouts Gather Tonight
Albany Scouts from Brownsville
as well as Albany will meet at the
Albany Chamber of Commerce rooms
Thursday at 8 o'clock for a court of
honor at which awards and badges
will be given out. Following the
court a meeting of the Linn district
committee will be held under chair
manship of J. T. Veatch.

Monmouth The largest pre
Christmas dinner in Monmouth was
the auunal turkey banquet and
trimmings at Jessica Todd hall Tue
sday evening for the 110 girls who
make the hall their home while
enrolled at Oregon College of Edu
cation. The college and Monmouth train
ing school closes Thursday for the
vacation during the Christmas and
New Year's holidays. There will
be two weeks' vacation which will
give every student ample time to
reach home and enjoy the holi
days with the home folks. Faculty
members, too, will take advantage
of the freedom from duty and con
tact friends and relatives at a dis
tance during the vacation period.
Before the fall term closes, stu
dents will have an opportunity to
schedule classes with Dr J. A. Chur
chill, acting registrar, and thus com
plete registration before the holi
days. Christmas decorations have given
the rooms in the training school a
festive appearance the past week. A

Louis Wampler presided over the
study hour and gave a resume of the
second and third chapters of the new
mission study book, "Women and
the Way." Group singing of Christ
mas hymns was enjoyed with Mrs,
John Cage as pianist.
Mrs. Cage, secretary, reported that
the local group sent 15 packages ot
cloth and a number of bandages as
part of the donation sent to tho

executive meeting to be held at the)
home of Mrs. John Cage on the Sil
verton highway Friday evening, De
cember 29.
At the recent Thankofferfng pro
gram held at the Fred Scharf home,
Rev. J. C. Campbell, pastor of the
First Evangelical church in Salem,
conducted the annual election of.
officers. The election resulted in thef
re-election of the entire group. In
cluding Mrs. Will Scharf, president;
Mrs. Lawrence Hammer, vice-president;
Mrs. John Cage, secretary;
Mrs. Paul Bassett. treasurer; Mrs.
Lena Bartruff, recording secretary.
