Purveyor Run
Down by Author
Philadelphia, Jan. 21 (U.R) A deal
er In obscene literature started a
federal prison term Friday as result
of the sleuthing of Courtney Riley
Cooper, author of crime stories and
close friend of J. Edgar Hoover.
Federal Judge Harry E. Kalodner
sentenced Samuel Weinsteln, alias
Albert Bchaefler, to a year and a
day, gave him a five-year suspended
sentence and placed him on five
years' probation on charges of send
ing obscene books through the mail.
"I was appalled by the number of
sex crimes," Cooper told the court.
"Criminologists agree that free ac
cess to books on sex Is in part re
sponsible. I decided to gather ma
terial for a book on the effect of
obscenity of youth."
Cooper said he posed as an Illit
erate muck soil farmer and gave his
Sebrlng, Fla.. address In commun
icating with Weinsteln, from whom
he obtained a book called "Midnight
Intimacies" and a set of two vol
umes titled "Memories of Madame
Ma delaine.'
"I agreed to pay $15 for 'Midnight
Intimacies' and $45 for the others,"
Cooper testified. "I found them to
be the most vile and rotten mater
ial ever written."
