THE ARMY POST MURDERS
By Virginia Hanson
Th Character: Kathrln Corntah,
mvalf. vlaltlna EllMbfth on a mld
w.trn Army pout. Elizabeth. Colonel
Wrlpht'a daughter. Adam Drew, act
ing commanding officer.
Yesterday: Ell7.abcth saya ah was
alone at home when Anne waa ahot.
but Annie aaya h waa there, too.
f . Chapter 24
No'i To Be Shaken .
'That . Is no concern of Mrs.
Wheeler's," she said in a queer,
strangled voice. "Nor of you or
anyone else." She grew calmer. "The
matter was purely personal be
tween Anne and me. It could have
no 'posslble bearing on her death."
Wild horses could not have drag
ged more out of her, and Adam was
tod Intelligent to try. He asked her
to send Annie in to him and stood
there watching her cross the dance
floor In the rumpled pink organdy
shephardess dress that was now so
much more than incongruous.
"And what do you know about
that?" he murmured aside to me.
He was nervous, alert, quivering
with eagerness like a bird dog at
point.
"Your guess is as good as mine,"
I told him with something like dis
may. Surely, surely Elizabeth was
not mixed up In this. How ghastly
for,. Adam If he were compelled to
report to Colonel Wright that his
daughter was the prise suspectl
for the chain of evidence was
growing stronger, link by link. Mo
tive, opportunity, the weapon. No
alibi for the shooting, and only a
circumstantial one for the stabbing.
Annie came In warily, like a cat
Into a strange kitchen. Her eyes
rested Inscrutably on me. swerved
to Adam with no change of ex
pression. His manner to her would have
served as well for the colonel's lady.
She perched distrustfully on the
edge of the chair he held for her
and folded knotty hands tight to
gether in her lap. Her Hps were
folded, too. and her faded blue eyes
were shrouded In determined reti
cence. It took a bit of wheedling to get
her to unfold those Hps, and even
when she did It was my impression
that she had come prepared to say
just so much and no more. In fact
she said It several times, In varying
forms, but the gist of the matter
was that Elizabeth had been with
her at the colonel's quarters from
quarter of eleven until a quarter
past. And she was not to be shaken
in that stand.
"But Elizabeth did not mention
you." Adam protested good-humor-edly.
"In fact she definitely stated
that she saw no one while she was
at home." 1
"She wouldn't be thinkin' of me.
The poor dear thought you meant
folks company."
"And she didn't go back to tell
you about Anne. How do you ac
count for that?"
I opened my Hps to say that she
might have, but I thought better of
It. And Annie did not contradict
him.
"She was that excited she forgot
It," she said Coolly.
"How did you 'Ind out about It.
bv the way?"
Annie blinked.' "It was that Mr.
Nelson the big fellow. He drove up
and come in hollering for Elizabeth,
so I come down to see what he
wanted. He told me about her."
A brief spasm twisted the wrin
kled face, the hands In her Up
twitched. "He said he was on his
way to the hospital, so I went up
and put on me black and followed."
"You were In bed, then, when he
came?"
"Where else? At that hour?"
She sniffed loudly, as if to re
mind him that she had her work to
do and couldn't go sky-hooting
around at all hours of the night
and now look at herl
I could almost hear the words
chasing themselves around In her
mind, but she was silent, in defer
ence either to Adam's rank or to'
the gravity of the situation.
Adam leaned forward and low
ered his voice. It's rather appalling
By
to see a man turn on his charm as
easily as he would the ignition
switch of his car. I had watched
him do it all evening, but it oc
curred to me that I had not no
ticed when he directed It at me. Or
had he?
I took a rather mean satisfaction
in seeing him fall this once, at
lease. For It definitely did not work
on Annie. There was a slightly ri
bald gleam in her hooded eyes that
vanished quickly as he stated his
business the same business he had
been trying to forward all evening,
but with no success. '
A Woman Screams
Adam continued to question An
nie. Anne Carewe had looked to him
like a girl in trouble. As a good
friend of Anne's mother as al
most a relative did she know
why?
Rage shook the little body sud
denly. Venom gleamed in the mur
ky eyes. Prying, and into the sec
rets of the dead, was he? He could
be better employed. And as for ask
ing her, he might as well ask the
man In the moon. She'd be likely
to hear of it, now wouldn't she?
She the colonel's maid of all work.
Adam ' begged her pardon most
humbly. His chagrin was so touch
ing that she calmed a little. But
if there had been anything else he
wanted to ask her the outburst had
driven it from his mind.
She took her own departure, not
waiting to be dismissed.
She rose. "I'll be leaving you,"
she said and suited the action to
the words. There was a pathetic
dignity to the little figure in Its
musty black as site disappeared from
the room.
Adam rather avoided my eye and
his manner did not encourage com
ment. I watched him pace the
floor a couple of turns, then swing
rather abruptly to the telephone.
He inquired first about his call to
the Omaha bank president, then
asked for the hospital.
"Better," he told me after he

had hung up. "Still hopeful. I feel
like a heel not to tell some of these
people. But how can you know who
you're talking to?" He sighed. "I'm
afraid the banker Is out for the
week-end."
He lifted the receiver again, an
nounced that he would be at the
Officers' club until further notice
and hung up.
"And now for Charlie."
There was a rather determined
grin on his face, like a comedian
with the toochache. The grin froze
there suddenly, exposing all his
teeth as though in some horrid
muscular spasm. It was as much
the sight of his as the sound of
Lou Orpington's screaming that sent
little Icy rivulets flowing down my
back and along my arms to the tips
of my fingers.
Adam was suddenly gone, bound
ing away miles ahead of me. I ran,
calling shamelessly after him to
wait, but of course he didn't hear
me.
She couldn't be badly hurt. I de
cided dispassionately, for only a
well woman could go on screaming
like that.
They were in the kitchen Lou,
Barney, the Shaws, Mrs. Flower.
The room seemed to be full of
them. I dashed in pell mell, aware
that Annie and Elizabeth were com
ing behind me. And then I halt
ed, arrested by their complete still
ness, their silence. They were Just
looking at something on the floor,
something pale and sticky, drench
ed in a messy, opaque fluid that was
forming a puddle around It
"It was In the freezer In the
Ice cream," Lou was explaining In
a high-pitched, hysterical voice. T
was going to taste It I almost
did then I felt something with
the ladle and fished It out."
A knife. Or was It a dagger?
Adam was bending down, not touch
ing it.
"Did you have your hands on
it?" he asked.
"I why yes, on the handle."
"No prints anyway, I'm afraid.
Not now."
Elizabeth said, "Let me see," soft
ly behind me.
