Clay Deposits
In Local Area
A preliminary report on refractory
clay deposits of Western Oregon, Is.
sued by the state bureau of mines,
says:
"Refractory clays are found
throughout the area west of the
Cascade Mountains in Oregon and
are characterised by moderately
high fusion, high shrinkage, and
dark fired colors. Precalculation re
duces shrinkage and cracking. Pre
liminary samples were obtained for
firing-test data, and from these
results four deposits were selected
tor additional study on the basis of
quality, probable tonnage, and
transportation conditions.
The Ellis deposit In southwest
ern Clackamas county Is typical of
the bentonltold Molalla clays, with
an average fusion of cone 31 plus,
high shrinkage and severe cracking
which can be improved by calcina
tion, 31,000 to 73.000 short tons avail.
able, and requiring a 'i mile truck
haul to ratliide at Molalla.
The King clay, east of Salem,
fuses at cone 33 plus to dark brown.
There are 340,000 to 330.000 short
tons available, and il'l mile truck
haul to rallslde at West Stayton
will be necessary: This clay is unique
for Its original white color, large
amount of water required for plas
ticity, large dry pore space, cracking,
and high shrinkage. The area to the
north seems to be underlain by
similar material. The future value
Is for use as a plastlclser with Its
own calcined grog or other non
plastic refractories.

Jacobs Denied
Right as Second
ForSchmeling
New York. June 31 UP) The New
York state athletic commission to
day denied Joe Jacobs' application
for reinstatement as a second o
he could work In Max SchmeUng's
corner tomorrow night when the
German battles Joe Louis for the
heavyweight championship.
Jacobs. SchmeUng's American re
presentative, has been under sus
pension here for several months and
repeatedly has sought reinstatement
without result.
At the same time the commission
settled an argument over what
gloves the combatants would use In
tomorrow night's fight, ruling that
both Schmeling and Louis might
use gloves manufactured by a New
York firm. Louis had sought to
gain permission to use Chicago-
manufactured gloves on the theory
that they fitted his hands better.
The commission order was based,
however, on the stuffing of the
gloves. The New York gloves con.
form with a commission rule that
gloves used in this state shall be
stuffed with curled hair. Ths Chi
cago gloves are stuffed with boiler
felt.
The commission revealed that a
special meeting would be held Thurs
day afternoon when contracts will
be signed for a September title
match between the winner of to
morrow night's engagement and
Max Baer, former holder of the
championship.
Realtors to Bid
For City Agency
All real estate dealers In Salem,
Instead of only one, will have a
chance to bid for placing on the
market 90 pieces of property that
the city has acquired on account of
delinquent street assessments. Al
derman David O'Hara said the city
had acquired about 140 properties.
Only 90 of these are now market
able, however, 39 that have been
deeded directly to the city and 85
acquired by sheriff's deed.
The special lien foreclosure com
mittee proposed a contract between
the city and Rich L. Reimann. real
estate dealer, whereby Mr. Reimann
would have the privilege of market
ing the properties, his commission
to be 10 per cent of sale price, paya
ble when 25 per cent of the price
had been paid. He would be re
quired when called upon to make
appraisals of property, to post "for
sale" signs and advertise the prop
erty. He would be allowed to let
other dealers list the property,
but would be required to pay their
commission out of his own. The
contract could be terminated on 30
days' notice by either way.
Alderman E. B. Perrln. objected
that It ."hardly seem fair to give
one man a monopoly of the busi
ness." Alderman Merrill D. Ohling
Inquired If the Salem Realty board
had nominated Reimann. O'Hara
said It had not, but that It chair
man had recommended the plan.
Ohling moved that the matter be
re-referred and the realty board
asked to nominate a dealer. O'Hara
objected to this because not all real
estate dealers In the city were mem
bers of the realtors' association. A
motion was then made for realtors
In general to submit proposals, and
the motion carried.

When the city council begins
consideration of the 1939 budget It

in Portland and other clues.
The proposal was made before
the city council last night by King
Blng Tom Hill of the Cherrians,
who asked that a special commit.
tee be appointed to confer with the
Council of Nobles of the Cherrians.
Mayor Kuhn appointed the ways
and means committee to act.
King Blng Hill cited the expense
of designing and entering Salem's
first prize winning float In the re
cent Portland Rose Festival parade,
