A guest In the capital this week was Mix Helen
Porter or San Francisco, fiancee of Edwin Hoffnell
of Honolulu, who visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
E. M. Hoffnell. Miss Porter sailed today from San
Francisco for Honolulu, where the and Mr. Hoffnell
rill be married Thursday at a high noon wedding.
Members of the choir of Calvary Baptist church,
after their regular rehearsal Thursday evening, sur
prised their director and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. E.
D. Llndburg, with a housewamlng at their new home
in Capitola. Ed Schunke, on behalf of the choir,
presented a gift to the honor guests. An Interesting
feature of the evening was the travelogue by Mr.
Llndburg concerning a recent 10-day trip to California,

The harp was especially constructed for. and
exhibited at, the Century of Progress Exposition In
Chicago. It Is known as the "Stradivarlus of Harps."
It required two years In building. Its scroll Inlay
lone are valued at $2000, Its Jewels on the adjustments
of the strings are of the finest watchmaker's art, and
It Is considered the last word in harp making. To
Mr. Baaanz fell the honor of being the first to play
it in a symphony concert at the Chicago World's Fair.
The artist will be assisted by hi daughter. Norma
Baganz; on the vlbraharp. and his son. Reuben, on
the cathedral marimba. Those who have heard this
trio are full of highest praise.
The concert program Sunday evening will include
a number of favorite selections from the classics
together with chorals and hymns of the church.
By request two concerts will be given, the first
at 7:30 o'clock and the second at o'clock.
Members of the Salem Delphian chapters are
making interesting plans for a reception to be given
Monday evening at 8 o'clock in the Carrier room of
the First Methodist church. The affair will honor
Mrs. Lena Latham Ooble, Pacific coast director of
Delphtans. A musical program will be given and
Mrs. Ooble will speak to the group.
Mrs. M. C. Findley Is heading the directorate and
Is being assisted by Mrs. Roger Mything, Mrs. Stanley
Krueger, Miss Esther Erlckson and Mrs. Esther Hage
dorn. .
The Business and Professional Women's club will
entertain with a Hobby party Friday, March 13, at
the Boy Scout cottage In Howard and Cottage streets.
Dr. Morse will show moving pictures of Arizona and
Death Valley.
Willamette University Campus A number of so
cial events have been planned for this week-end to
honor the May Week-end guests on the campus.
Last night the Willamette University Associated stu
dents entertained with a dance at the armory between
the hours of 8:30 and 11:30 o'clock honoring the
campus visitors.
Following the dance last night members of the
Beta Chi sorority entertained with a fireside party
honoring their house guests and the Alpha Phi Alpha
sorority entcTtained with a fireside party at their
house.
Tonight Delta Phi maids will honor Princess Mary
Jeannette at a formal banquet at the Marlon hotel
and this evening will entertain with a slumber party
honoring their guests. Tonight members of Daleth
Teth Oimel will honor their campus guests at a buffet
upper at Chresto Cottage and the Alpha Phi Alpha
aorority will entertain with a dinner In their gardens.
Tomorrow mothers will be the Inspiration for a
number of affairs on the campus. Members of Daleth
Teth Gimel will honor their mothers at a tea at
Chresto Cottage between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30
o'clock, and members of the Sigma Tau and Kappa
Gamma Rho fraternities will honor their mothers at
dinners at their respective houses.

Mrs. James J. Panton, president of the woman
auxiliary of the Province of the Pacific, left this
morning for Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend the pro
vincial meeting. The Rt. Rev. Henry St. George
Tucker, presiding bishop of the Episcopal church in
the United States, will give the opening sermon and
will also be the principal speaker at the Synod ban
quet and at an evening session, airs. Panton will
visit In San Francisco before returning home about
June first.

beautifully appointed with orchid and yellow spring
flowers, flanked by yellow tapers. The lovely antique
tea service was brought from Denmark and was loaned
by Mrs. Floer and Mrs. Hrubets.

on his concertina.

speak on "The European Situation" and State Treas

Miss Barbara May Belt, daughter of Judge and
Mrs Harry H. Belt, was complimented Thursday
evening when a group of nine of her classmates called
at the Belt residence to celebrate Miss Barbara May'
14th birthday anniversary. Supper was served fol

Salem Music Teachers' association will meet Tues
day evening at 7:45 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Bertha

A feature of the nation-wide celebration of the
150th anniversary of the signing of the constitution,
which will be a part of every Sesqulcentennial celebra
tion, Is the planting of trees. The millions of "con
stitution" trees thus set out during the period of the
celebration will prove a lasting and appropriate trib
ute to the constitution of the United States.
Capital Unit of the American Legion auxiliary Is
making elaborate plans for dedication exercises to be
held on the grounds of the new Salem high school
Wednesday, May 11, at 1:30 o'clock. The unit has
purchased an Oregon white fir tree and the dedication
will be registered on the National Honor Roll of the
American Tree association.
Previous to the ceremonies, Oeorge Koehn, na
tional executive man of the American Legion, will
address the Salem high school student body at the
assembly at 12:50 o'clock.
All patriotic organizations and the general public
are Invited to attend the dedication.

liminary to the Baptist convention which will be

Wendell Johnson of Portland, who won first placs
in the state high school contest for senior class vio
linists, Is a son of Rev. S. Darlow Johnson, former

a violin student of Mary Schultz Duncan at the

The Salem MacDowell club met Tuesday evening
at the David Bennett Hill residence for election of
officers snd discussion of the summer's activities.
Mrs. Doris Schwabbauer was named president and
other officers will be Susan Krueger, vice-president;

and Annabel Moon, auditor.

A large group of club members will motor to Port
land next week for the Klrsten Flags tad concert.
A special Mother's Day concert will be given ta
Eugene Sunday afternoon at McArthur Court by
Helen Jepson, glamorous star of the Metropolitan
Opera company.
Miss Jepson's recital, one of the highlights of
the annual Junior Week-end festivities on the Uni
versity ot Oregon campus, will make the close of the
Associated Students' 1937-38 Greater Artists series.
The program will Include special selections chosen
by Miss Jepson in honor of the visiting mothers. Also
on the colorful and well-balanoed program will bs
operatic arias sung by Miss Jepson on ths Metropoli
tan stage and popular concert numbers.
Miss Jepson has been a leading prima donna of
both the Metropolitan and Chicago Orand Opera com
panies for the past two years and In addition one of
the country's favorite concert and oratorio soloists.
Reserved seat tickets for Sunday's concert are
available at the McArthur Court ticket office on ths
campus. The program will begin at 3:15 o'clock.
The roster of student body officers at Mtus oeDsasi
for 1938-1939 was completed recently. Among HaU
officers named was Mlas Ruth Jean Garnjobst, daugh
ter of Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Garnjobst of Salem, who
will sen as fir chief.
The evening group of the Fidac Study club of
the American Legion auxiliary will meet Tuesday
evening. May 10, at 8 o'clock, at the home of Mrs.
O. V. Richardson, 541 Statesman street.
The executlvs board of the American Legion
auxiliary will meet Monday evening at 9 o'clock
at the home of Mrs. Walter Zosel, 180 East Superior.
Both the Junloraldes and the Junlorettes of the
American Legion auxiliary will meet Monday after
noon at 1:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Lelf Bergsvlk,
