Bund Riot

N.Y.). was asked by the German-
American Bund today following a

quest," the telegram said, "Immedi
ate Investigation to determine any
connection of Representative Dick
stein with troublemakers who at
tempted to cause riots at this meet
ing." Jean Math las, one of the Injur
ed, said the riot began when he
rose and asked, "Will there be any
English spoken here?"
"And with that," he said, "a bunch
of men in Nazi uniforms Jumped
up and began to punch me and
trample on me."

To the Editor: It Is doubtful if
ever any people was subjected to
such an avalanche, of propaganda
as the citizens of the proposed seven
county utility district before the
election. The peaceful Polk county
hills reverberated with oratory and
the pleading voice of the personal
contact man. It came rushing
through the malls like a surging
tide, In letters, cards and packages.
One farmer was seen hauling the
stuff home with a trailer. Another
was heard to remark, as he was
shoveling It Into the furnace, that
it was hot stuff.
Perhaps this was Just an example
of what elections In the future will
be like. Politics nowadays are real
ly economic problems, such as dis
tribution of wealth, the control of
light and power, and so forth. It
is all based on the modem maxim,
What concerns all should be operat
ed for the good of all."
It la an Inspiration to know, that
In spite of the fierce opposition of
the dally press and power com
panies, the. rural districts in both
Polk and Yamhill -counties voted for
the district.
What Is the kind of stuff that
real democracies are made of? The
people aim to reach their objec
tive and neither abuse or any silly
propaganda shall sway their course
until they reach their goal.
Behold the proud city of Eugene.
How well I remember the bitter at
tack and abuse that was heaped
upon those good people who had
the courage to bond their prosperity
in order to establish their own pow
er plant, which now is the envy of
all Oregon cities, and are making
the little city famous all over the
country for Its low rates.

Criticizes State
Portland, April 21 WV- Dr. Kath
ryn McHale, Washington, general
director of the Association of Uni
versity Women, said In an interview
yesterday that the allotment per
child in Oregon for education "is
very low."
"I am glad to see the efforts
now being made to increase the
sum," she remarked.
On a tour of northwest states, Dr.
McHale said the prime objective of
the association was to give children
equal educational opportunities.
She commended the women's
buildings on the campuses at Eu
gene and Cor vail la as being "out

tor, formally announced yesterday
that power would be sold on a kil
owatt year basis, a unit system new
to the United States but success
fully tried in Ontario, Canada.
Ross said rates for a kilowatt
year to the public utility district or
private utility company which pur
chases Bonneville power retail
consumers can not purchase direct

ington. The kilowatt year sales unit is
based entirely on the cost of pro
duction and is an attempt to leave
present practices of selling power
"from the old scarcity standpoint,"

"Consumers now pay for millions

the federal communications com

to the "assumption" by the FCC that
it investigation was responsible for
the recent lowering of rates and im
provement of services.
Commenting on the 25 per cent
rate reduction recommended by the

turn their clocks ahead an hour
when daylight savings time goes
into effect at 2 a. m . Sunday. It
will be effective until September
29.
"Summer time" also Is observed
in Labrador and Newfoundland, 74
Canadian cities and towns, nine
European nations, and to some ex
tent In South America, Central
America. New Zealand and Africa
The six states where daylight
saving time is almost universally
observed are New Hampshire, re
cently added. New Jersey, Dela
ware, Connecticut, Massachusetts
and Rhode Island.
States in which many cities have-
adopted the plan include New York.
Pennsylvania, Maine, Michigan. Il
linois, Indiana, Vermont, Ohio,
Georgia, Idaho and Minnesota.
The greatest additions to the
number of communities observing

Pendleton, April 21. UP) Charles
K. Cranston, 75, former Umatilla
county treasurer, who died sudden
ly near Salem yesterday, was an ac
countant, referee in bankruptcy and
deputy clerk of the state supreme
court.
He also acted as Pendleton cor
respondent for the Walla Walla
Union-Bulletin.
Mr. Cranston was born in the
Waldo lHlls district near Salem but
came to Pendleton when a young
man. He was a member of the state
fish and game commission under
Governor Oswald West.
