New Highway
Link Dedicated
Ashland. Ore, Oct. 31 (U.P A new
link In the Pacific highway from
here to Just below the lununlt of
the Siskiyou mountains, opened to
travel a few weeks ago, was formal
ly dedicated late yesterday.
Henry F. Cabell, chairman of the
state highway commission who offi
ciated at the dedication ceremonies,
assured a crowd of approximately
300 that the 11 miles of wide new
concrete would be supplemented
with another 7.09 miles (to the Cal
ifornia line) as soon as funds were
available.
The new route cuts 3.4 miles from
the old twisting route up the Slskl-
yous, and eliminates all short curves.
The old 81sklyou route had long
been considered one of tha worst
stretches from Canada to alexin on
tha Pacific highway, and was fre
quently Impassable during winter
snowstorms.
Tha 11 miles of concrete waa un
der construction four years, at
cost of (1 .049,333. To finish the
route to the line would take ap
proximately another million dollars.
