CHINESE WAR
FUND FORMED
San Francisco, Aug. 21 War
excitement swept through San
ifran clscoa famed Chinatown today
and inhabitants turned from the
prosaic task of entertaining tourist
to piling up a relief fund for the
battle-torn homeland.
Actually the tourists saw a show
they hadn't expected. Clusters of
excited Chinese stood on virtually
every corner of narrow, teeming
Orant avenue, the district's thor
oughfare. Chinese and American newspa
pers with reports of the Shanghai
fighting sold readily. Scores of Chi
nese, from white-thatched, toothless
elders to impulsive youths, crowded
about offices of the two vernacular
dailies, where war bulletins were
posted in the windows.
Jubilant chatter followed display
of any gains by Chinese forces in
the Shanghai area.
Along Orant avenue, which runs
for nearly a mile through the world's
largest Chinatown outside of China,
solicitors sold tickets today for a
native opera, proceeds of which will
go to war relief.
Many of the tickets were sold by
actors regularly appearing at the
two Chinese theatres here. In one
of which the benefit performance
will be held next Sunday and Mon
day night.
B. S. Pong, president of the Chi
nese National Salvation league, said
Chinatown's 17,000 inhabitants al
ready had raised between $50,000
and $100,000 to send homeward.
Pong said women's groups, of
which there are many in the closely
packed quarter, are preparing band
ages, medical supplies and clothing
for both refugees and soldiers.
MOVE TO REDUCE
VEHICLE LICENSES
Sacramento. Cal Aug. 21 (U.RI
Ray Ingel. state director of motor
vehicles, said yesterday California
may Join 10 other western states
within a month in a move to lighten
license levies against vehicles em
ployed In Interstate commerce.
Permissive legislation under which
California would be permitted to
make extensive exemptions becomes
effective September 1. Ingels said.
Heavy trucks, engaged strictly in
Interstate commerce, probably would
grant non-resident permits without
charge such as currently are grant
ed tourists entering the state in pas
senger cars, he explained. Any such
carriers also engaged In Interstate
commerce would be assessed the
regular fee, however, Ingels said.
Motor vehicle administrators from
California, Oregon, Washington.
Nevada and Utah reached this and
other agreements at a Portland.
Ore., conference.
Conferees decided also to discon
tinue charging licenses in each state
for eara of traveling salesmen. He
said an agreement between Califor
nia and Oregon was expected within
a few weeks wherein each state will
recognize licenses of workers living
In California and working In Ore
gon, or vice versa.
