GLACIER PUSHES
TO RIVER'S EDGE
Fairbanks, Alaaka, June 21 IPi
Alaska's rambling Black Raplda
glacier, It movement speeded by
hot weather, pushed to the edge of
the Big Delta river today while
three lakes formed on the surface
of the big ice mass.
Travelers who viewed the glacier
from the Richardson highway said
It la now less than a mile from the
Black Rapids roadhouse, situated
across the river.
Although Pilot E E. Parmenter
reported photographs showed the
glacier moved 400 feet in two days,
others said It has since slowed down
and no alarm was expressed.
Another airman, Harold Glllam
from Cordova, flew over the glacier
and reported three lakes formed on
Its surface from melting Ice and
snow. One, he said, is large enough
to lAnd a plane.
Some thought the lakes might
overflow suddenly, perhaps causing
a flood, but pilots recalled similar
lakes had formed no the Eendlcott
glacier at one time and disappeared.
At Fairbanks, weather .observers
.ald the maximum temperature of
91 degrees Saturday, equalling the
record of June 10, was the highest
in 18 years,
Pellagra Survey is
Slated in Arkansas
West Memphis, Tenn.. June 31
U.P A survey of pellagra one of
the most prevalent of diseases
among the poorer class of southern
rural families will be started In
four northern Arkansas counties Dr.
B. M. Stevenson, Crittenden county
health officer, has announced.
The survey will be conducted bv
the U. 8. public health service and
the American Red Cross.
Stevenson said an attempt would
be made to establish the relation
ship between pellagra and floods in
the founr counties, over which the
Mississippi river overflowed during
the winter months.
"The survev and control work
which may follow the survey may
last over a period of two or three
years." Stevenson said. "There Is a
good bit of pellagra in this area, al
though It is not as bad as it was
two or three years ago

PARTY STARTS
BY PLANE FOR
SAN FRANCISCO
(Continued from page 1)
mile non-stop flight which ended
here at 8:23 a. m. PST Sunday
when a dense fog prevented the
fliers from reaching San Francisco,
5N miles farther south, will serve
as a "technological guinea pig" In
the interests of Soviet aviation.
Jt will be carefully dismantled
here and crated for shipment to
Russia, where each part will be set
entlflcally Inspected and studied by
ooviet, lecnnicians. In th Is wav.
Troyanovsky said, the effect of the
epochal flight on the ship, will de
termlne "future development of Rus
sian aviation.
The three flying heroes Valeria
Chkalov, chief pilot, O. P. Baldukov
and A. V. Bellakov arose this mom-
Ing fully recovered physically from
the hardships of their 93 hour, 17
minute flight.
Dressed ln civilian clothing once
more their first thought of the day
was to thank their host and hostess,
Brigaaier.oeneral and Mrs. George
Marshall for the hospitality which
was shown them since they landed
here unheralded Sunday morning.
They ate hearty breakfasts and
after eating strolled through the
grounds of General Marshall's horn.
They appeared extremely Interested
In the trees which are Indigenous
to the Pacific northwest and mads
unsuccessful attempts to question
the soldier orderlies who were es
corting them on the stroll. The ef
forts of the orderlies to understand
or reply to the questions were equal
ly unsuccessful, the filers could
speak no English, the soldiers no
Russian.
Later they slipped quietly out the
back door of General Marshall 'a
home and went to downtown Van
couver where they purchased rain
coats.
Before proceeding to the field
where the instruments were inspec
ted by a board of representatives of
the American nautical association,
the aviators returned to the house
where, with the aid of interpreters
they discussed their flight and Rus
sian flying with members of the
board and aviation officials of
Pearson field.
Ambassador Troyanovsky reveal
ed that the Soviet Union plans many
more such flights but he does not
know what those plans are at pre
sent, "This flight demonstrated," he
said, "the feasibility of long dis
tance flying by Soviet planes."
The technological possibilities In
aviation are so great and the study
of this flight may be so important
to the development of aviation that
the Russian government did not
want to run the risk of flying the
huge monoplane beyond the point
where it ended its long flight,
Troyanovsky said.
He praised the fliers warmly and
said that a great celebration will be
held ln Moscow when the trium
phant trio returns from 1U tour of
the United Stales.
The length and route of this tour,
la still indefinite, he said. After a
"short time" which he would not
define, Troyanovsky said the fliers
will leave by train or by plane and
will go to Washington. D. C. The
tour from there will remain un
decided until they reach the Rus
sian embassy ln Washington, ha
continued.
"These fliers, however, are only
three of many great filers the Soviet
Union has developed, and the plane
only one of several."
The landing here will not be the
end of the ship, however. After the
parts have gone through minute
study and examination ln the labora
tories the big plane will be carefully
overhauled and will be placed ln
service again for similar flights.
Seattle. June 21 ICR) How the
United States army signal corps
radio network from Seattle to
Alaska helped guide the three Sov
viet Russian fliers from Moscow to
Vancouver, Wash , was revealed to
day. Work of the signal corps and
the weather bureau was kept secret
even after the flight was under way,
so carefully had the Soviet govern
ment prepared for the aerial ad
venture. A. A. Vartanlan. Soviet engineer
In charge of the flight arrange
ments, was here from New York to
translate all messages from the
plane and send out reports In Rus
sian. Several times he talked to
Mofcow by telephone.
Signal corps stations at Point
Barrow. Nome, Fairbanks. Anchor
age. Juneau. Ketchikan and Seattle
