AMERICAN L EAGUE CLUBS GROUPED IN TIGHT RACE
THE CAPITAL JOURNAL. SALEM. OREGON
LEADERS LESS
THAN 5 GAMES
AHEAD BROWNS
B the Auoci iMd Press)
The whole tiling doesn't make as
much sence as an insane asylum, but
the figures show the American lea
gue is off to a closer and more com
pleiely unloosed for start than It
ha been in years.
By the end of the first month last
year, five games separated first and
fourth place. Tim season, the race
was regarded as New York, Detroit,
Cleveland and nothing much else.
But io far it's been as tight as a mus
tard plaster so close in fact, that
only 42 games separate the leaders
of the moment, Cleveland s Indians,
from the cellar riding St. Louis
Browns.
And most astonishing of all Is that
the longest of tlie long shots, Connie
Mack's mystifying Athletics, are in
second place, leading both the Yan
kees and the Tigers. They were on
top until yesterday, but the Indians
licked Die tar out of the Boston Red
Sox, 16-5, while the As dropped
3-2 decision to the Tigers, which gave
the Tribe the pace by a percentage
margin.
Hottest of all right now are the
reviving Washington Senators and
their sudden form reversal is Jus!
as explainable as the rest of the leu-
gue's ways. Although their pitching
still is in a sorry state, the Nats are
starting to hit, and on this strength
alone have won their last four to
climb from eighth to fifth place. It
took two twirlers and 12 innings be
fore they finally overcame the
Browns yesterday 5 to 4 on Ossie
Bluege'n timely single.
Thursday's games:
National Pittsburgh 5, Philadel
phia 2; Boston 4, Cincinnati 1; Chi
cago 6, Brooklyn 1; New York 7, St
Louis 4. American Cleveland 16.
Boston 5; Washington 5. St. Louis 4
(12 innings); Detroit 3, Philadelphia
2; Chicago 3, New York 1.

A pair of ball games do not make
a AeaMm But In the case of Cliff
Melton, the New York Giants' rook
ie lefthander, two games were
enough to make the lanky hurler the
most-discussed new pitcher In the
National league.
In his first two starts as a Giant,
Melton fanned 22 Boston Bees. He
lost the first gme by a slim mar
gin to Guy Bu&h. then turned the
tables on the jame hurler In the
second battle.
Giant Catchrr Gua MancuM
Insists the mighty man from
Black Mountain. N. C, is the
fastest lefthander in the senior
circuit since BUI Hallahan's
fireball smouldered out. Gus
should know. He caught Ilalla
han when Wild Bill was hottest
with the Cardinals.
Giant bench chatter brums out
great variety of opinion. Melton'
has supporters who feci certain he
has as much speed as Van Mungo
of Brooklyn. Even those not will
ing to concede Cliff has as much
speed as the leagues fastest ad
mlt the rookie has the makings of
a real mound star.
Melton reminds one of Lefly
Grove, when Grove first came
up to the Athletics from Balti
more, Grove was a fireball
pitcher then. If anything. Mel
ton haa a bit mora control than
Grove showed In his early games
for Connie Mack.
Melton, 24 yaers old, started his
career with Asheville in 1931. Bal
timore purchased him before the
end of the season. He was usually
an Oriole for the next five years,
with side trips to Erie, the Yan
kees, Newark and Blnghampton. His
work showed steady improvement.
Last season he turned in 20 vic
tories for Baltimore.

TOWNIES PLAY
HILLS CREEK
Woodbura The Woodbum Town
iea will play the Hills Creek Lumber
company team of Eugene at Woog
burn Sunday afternoon In the second
Stale league game, beginning at 2 30.
Manager BomhofI states he is
perfectly satisfied with the showing
made last Sunday by the Townws
and will start practically the same
lineup for this Sundays game.
The team bitting average for the
first game was 368 with but two err
ors, which was very good consider
ing the dampish weather and the
fact that no team practice was held
prior to the game. Claud Cant, first
baseman, was particularly effective
at bat, getting 3 for 4 including two
two-base hits. The keystone' combi
nation of Salstrom and Cody shows
promise of a strong defense.
Heine' Zimmerman pitched very
effective ball with little exertion and
will be on the mound again witn
Voget. peppery catcher, on the re
ceiving end.
