MEMORIAL DAY
PROGRAM DATED
Memorial day services, to be held
Monday, May 31, have been arranged
by the Federated Patriotic societies,
according to William Bliven, presi
dent. These will open with memorial
services at the OAR circle in City
View cemetery at 10 o'clock, follow
ed by the usual parade and program
at the armory.
Col. Carle Abrams will be grand
marshall in charge of parade events.
A. H. Dewey, past commander of Ha',
Hlbbard post, Spanish American
War veterans, will be the main speak
er at the armory at 3 o'clock follow
ing the parade.
Prior to this the annual water ser

vice for sailors, marines and soldiers
who died at sea will be hem from
the Marlon-Polk county bridge under
the direction of the Women's Belle!
Corps.
As a part of the observance, speak
ers will be assigned the city schools
next Friday.
GOVERNOR TO BE
AWAY FORTNIGHT
Governor Charles H. Martin will
see little of his office here the next
two weeks, he said today, when an
nouncing a full schedule of events.
He will leave this noon for The
Dalles where tonight he will ad
dress a public meeting on the
Bonneville issues. From there he
will go to Arlington to remain over
night.
Tomorrow he will attend a meet
ing of pea growers at Milton, re
turning to Salem 8unday. Sunday
afternoon he will be in Eugene
where he will talk over the Na
tional radio hook-up on the state
highway booster program.
Monday morning the executive
will review the R.O.T.C. troops at
Corvallls prior to leaving for Rote
burg for dinner that night. The
next day, Tuesday, he will Join the
caravan for California where he will
remain until the middle of the next
week.

Appointment of a state school
superintendent to succeed Charles
A. Howard, whose resignation will
become effective September 1. will
be deferred until Governor Martin
interviews personally the leading
candidates for the position.
The executive office reported that
at least 12 names would be con
sidered by the governor, eight of
whom were declared to be demo
crats and four are republicans. The
retiring superintendent Is a repub
lican. .
