Thursday Event
The Salem Philharmonic orches
tra association will entertain with
a large benefit bridge tea at the
Hotel Marion Thursday afternoon
with some 90 tables already reserved
by Salem matrons and maids for
the affair.
Mrs. Donald Young Is arranging
the tea tabid and Mrs. William H.
Lytle and Mrs. William Burghardt
will be in charge of the tea ar
rangements. Alternating at the urns will be
Mrs. H. V. Collins and Mrs. Silas
Oaiser and Mrs. Bruce R. Baxter
and Mrs. Paul Wallace.
Assisting In serving will be the
Misses Eleanor and Elaine Sherman,
Patricia Schramm, Margaret Chad
wick and Charlotte Hill.

Lectures at Lausanne
Dr. Helen Pearce of the Willam
ette university Enclish department
was the featured speaker In the
third of a juries of lectures to be
sponsored by the university at Lau
sanne hall Tuesday evening.
Dr. Pearce chose as her subject. !
"Some Implications of the Harvard
Tercentenary." Out of the 2.600
persons attending the Tercentenary
late lat summer only 100 were
womrn and Dr. Pearce was one of
the-c. .She described in detail the
celebration, which was sponsored by
the Harvard school of Arts and Sci
rnces, and the significance of the
Tercentenary.
Mis Helen McHirron played a
piano solo. Later refreshments
were served Inlormally. As guests
of the Willamette faculty several
members of the Salem public school
system were in attendance.

Dr. J. Hudson Ballard discussed.
"Releasing Our Mental Reserves,"
at the annual Rotary "Ladies'
NUht" banquet held at the Hotel
Marion last night. Dr. Ballard
brought out various vital psycho
logical facts and illustrated his talk
with numerous interesting and
amusing anecdotes. His talk was
preceded by an Introduction given
by Dr. Bruce R. Baxter.
Preceding Dr. Ballard s talk Hal
Young of the University of Oregon
faculty, sang several groups of fa
vorite melodies. He was accom
panied by Robert Garrison. Keith
Barker, also of Eugene, presented a
Juggling act.
The hotel dining room was decor
ated with great baskets of blossoms.
Each long table was centered with
bowls of daisies and tulips. Brown
E. Sisson presided and William Mc
Gilchrist. Sr., led the group singing,
The affair was arranged by J. Ly
man Steed and his committee.

The Salem Woman's club will ob
serve "Hobby Day" Saturday at the
regular session in the woman's club
house in North Cottage street. Mrs.
Charles Galloway, program chair
man, is requesting that members
bring their particular hobbies, whe
ther they be curios of various sorts
or antiques.

for this meeting and is arranging

The calling hours will be from
4 to 6 o'clock. Elaborate spring dec
orations are being planned to dec
orate the drawing room where Wil
lamette's royalty and sorority maids
will receive.

Has Anniversary
Centralia Temple, No. 11, Pythian
Sisters, will observe its 42nd anni
versary Thursday evening. Temples
at Silver ton, Dallas and Indepen
dence have been sent invitations to
participate and furnish a number
for the program bring prepared by
the program committee which in
cludes Mrs. Wayne E. Greenwood
and Mrs. Earl Burk.
The entertainment will be open
to members and their friends.
Guests are also expected from Hub
bard. Albany, Portland and other
temples. Refreshments will be serv
ed later in the evenine by the com
mittee, Mrs. Mary Push, Mrs. Mae

The card party given by the
Knights of Pythias and Pythian
Sifters Monday was enjoyed by a

Salem folk are interested in the
announcement of the wedding date
of Miss Ruth New bold of Salem and
Bartholomeus Weindert Wepster of
Sheridan, which was announced
Sunday as June 20. The announce
ment was made by Captain John
P. Wepster. who was in the Port-
of Portland with the Dutch Motor-
ship Damsterdyke the past week-end.
Miss Newbold is well known in
Salem. Her fiance came to the
states four years ago and is assist
ant manager of the Sunridge grove
at Sheridan. He will become mana
ger of the grove July 1. Before com'
ing to the states he was in the
queens royal life guards in Holland,
Following their marriage the cou
ple will leave for a honeymoon in
Mexico City. Next year they plan
to visit in Holland.

Flunk days are taking the inter
est of Willamette students this
week.
The week-end will be a gay one
with the Sigma Taus and Alpha Psi
Deltas joining forces for a large
spring dance.
The Kappa Gamma Rhos will en
tertain with a line party Saturday
night at a downtown theatre.
The Alpha Phi Alpha girls will
close the festivities with a late ser
enade Saturday night.

Loaves for Abroad
Salem friends of Mrs. Ralph E.
Williams of Portland are interested
to learn that she will leave the end
of the week for the east and Eur
ope for about a three months' stay.
She -will go first to London to at
tend the coronation ceremonies and
later plans to tour the Scandinav
ian countries. Mrs. Williams will
be accompanied by her sister-in-law,
Mrs. Albert J. Rhodes of Se
attle. The two will sail from New
York in early May on the Bcren
Saria.

Junior Group
Holds Session
Silverton The junior members of
the American Lesion auxiliary held
their regular meeting Monday after-
school with Juanita Hastings in
charge.
A number of scrap books made
by the girls were taken to the T. B
hospital Monday by the sponsor.
Mrs. Helen Hastings. She reported
36 children in the hospital between
the ages of 5 and 15 years. The
members of the auxiliary are col
lecting pictures for the busy hours
of the patients for making their
own scrap books, as their project for
the month of May.

members of the Round-Up club at
a smartly arranged luncheon Tues-!
day given at the home of Dr. and '

Mothers' Club at
Aminscn Home
Mrs. Fred Anunsen was hosu&s to
the Alpha Phi Alpha Mothers' club
yesterday afternoon in her home
in Leslie street. Miss Ruth Aminscn
assisted her mother during the af
ternoon. At the business meeting the club
made plans for a bridge benefit to
be sponsored In May, and for an
apron sale to be held at the same
time.
During the afternoon Mrs. George
Rossinan reviewed the book, "Rose
Deeprose." and Miss Mabelle Lll
burn, accompanied by her mother,
Mrs. Frank Lilburn, gave several vio
lin solos.
Two out of town mothers were in
attendance, Mrs. M. E. Johnson and
Mrs. Percy Engdahl of Great Falls,
Mont. Both are visiting their daugh
ters In Lausanne hall.
