Several attempts were made to
assassinate Mayor Hsiao Chenying
.during his tenure of office, by send
ing him bombs through fche mails
and by chit-coolies, but the infernal
machines were discovered before
they exploded. The mayor never
traveled outside his yamen without
a strong body-guard, nor. for that
matter, do other high officials.

change in Japanese policy toward

slightest excuse, the official spokes
men and the Japanese press burst
forth with torrents of abuse against
Ihe Nankiang government, the
North China officials. Blue Shirts,
or whatever suited their fancy, be
fore any investigation, was made.
Now the Japanese authorities for
hid the Nippon press from making
any accusations until a complete
investigation has been made and
some definite proof of the perpe
trators has been obtained. In the
last three assassinations, the Jap
anese consular police within a few
hours annnounced that the mur
fers had no political significance.

enrolled in its grammar and high
itliools this year than ever betore.
Charles A. Howard, superintendent
of public instruction, believes.
Reports from county school sup
erintendents all over the state in
dtcate that several thousand chl
dren have come Into Oregon in re
cent months with their parents
from the drouth areas of the mid
dle west to swell the school attendance.
The record year so far has been
1632-33 with 309.433 pupil In the
schools, Howard said. The superin
tendent would not venture a pre
diction as to this year's total, but
said all indications were that a new
record might be set.
Attendance was down to 202.141
last year and 201,654 In 1933-34. The
1931-33 school census or count of
all children of school age was the
record at 262,498.
The declining birth rate has been
leflected In school figures for the
last five years, Howard pointed out.
Between 1930 and 1935, grade
schools lost 10.000 pupils, but hig.i
schools added the same number to
maintain a balance. Orade school
attendance dropped from. 154,908 In
1930 to 144.449 last year. High
school enrollment Increased from
47,687 In 1930 to 57,692 last year.
