. A group of Salem matrons ar
ranged a clever surprise party last
night in compliment to Mrs. Altora
Smith. The affair was a house
warming given at Mrs. Smith's
home in North Winter street.
Bridge was in play tor several
hours and a gift shower honored
Mrs. Smith preceding a late supper

Bride of D. Isom
At an attractive home wedding
Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock
Miss Lydia Childs. daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. C. D. childs, became the
- bride of Dorsey Isom, son of Mrs.
Savoli Isom of Brownsville.
Rev. Carl Miller, uncle of the
- bride and pastor of the Friends
church of Newberg, performed the
ceremony before the immediate rel
atives of the couple. The couple
stood before an improvised altar of
gladioli and roses.
The bride wore a gown of flow
ered chiffon and a corsage of Talis
man roses and sweet peas. There
were no attendants.
For traveling the bride chose
smart suit of white linen. After a
wedding trip along the Oregon coast
- the couple will be at home in
Brownsville. Mrs. Isom will teach in
the Brownsville high school for the
ensuing year.
Mrs. Isom is an alumna of Wil
lamette university and was promi
nent In campus activities. She was
member of Daleth Teth Glmel
and Alpha Kappa Nu, scholastic
honorary. Mr. Isom was educated Ih
the Brownsville schools, and has
been In business there for several
. years.

Play at Woodburn
Woodburn Women of the Wood
burn Golf club entertained the
women of the Salem Country club
at Woodburn Thursday. A team
match was played in the morning,
followed by luncheon at the club
house. Mrs. Claude Johns of Sa
lem held low gross with 78 Bnd
Mrs. R. E. Joseph low net with 90-28-62.

vited a group of fourteen Salem
folk to their gardens Tuesday eve
ning for a picnic dinner. The eve
ning hours were spent Informally.
The Disabled American Veterans
of the World war and auxiliary will
hold their annual picnic at Paradise
Island, which is located near the
airport, Sunday. August 23. Dinner
will be at e o'clock.

Miss Margaret Ayers and Miss
Charlotte Eyre entertained mem
bers of Beta Chi sorority last night
at the Ayers home in South Cottage
street. ' Rushing plans were dis
cussed by the group and bridge was
in play during the evening.

ning. Gladioli and sweet peas were

living room, in the presence of Mr.

Merlin Hill.
The bride was charming In an old
rose lace dress. Following the cere
mony Mr. and Mrs. Wtight left on
a wedding trip by motor to points
of Interest In Oregon They will
make their home in Jefferson.
Mrs. Wright is well known here,
having taught In the Jefferson grade
school for the past two years.

hostess, assisted by Mrs. Mina Coop
er and Mrs. Arthur Johnson, in
compliment to Miss Patsy Hall,
bride-elect of Howard Daugherty,

Miss Hall during the evening. A late

Miss Evaline Gaw, of Kiukiang,
China, has been a guest the past
week at the home of her uncle, M. L
Capps of Oak Knoll farm. Miss
Gaw has been engaged In mission'
ary work in China during the past
twelve years, and on her return to
her work, August 29, she will spend
six more years In the Orient before
another furlough Is granted her.
