ty for Major-General George A.
White, who is there in connection
with the division staff training ex
ercises. The visitors surprised General
White at camp headquarters and
presented him with a birthday cake.
General White cut and distributed
the cake, following which the party
adjourned to two mess halls which
were thrown open for the occasion,
where they enjoyed dinner. General
White was also presented with sev
eral gifts.

will sponsor a luncheon at the
Quelle Tuesday, August 4, It has
been announced. The affair Is be
ing arranged in compliment to
prospective University of Oregon
students. Victor P. Morris, dean of

"Higher Education."

Lee Memorial church was enter

To Be Chosen
The search for the typical mother
depicting the pioneer spirit, will be
brought to a close In Salem Thurs
day night at the chamber of com
merce rooms when a candidate will
be chosen.
The contest winner will be among
the women from many other cities
to be honored at the Whitman
Centennial, which will be in Wash
ington August 13-16 in Walla Walla.
Salem friends of Mrs. John Goss
of Marshfield will be Interested to
learn that, she spent last week In
Portland. With her daughter, Miss
Barbara, she will take up her resi
dence in Portland early in Septem
ber. Friends are greeting Mrs. Fred
Barker upon her return from a 10
weeks' visit in Pittsburgh, New
York and Minneapolis.

Pry are expected home Saturday
from a six-weeks' trip by auto
through a number of mid-western
states and Montana, where they vis
ited relatives.

at Colton, South. Dak. The occasion
was the 60th wedding anniversary
of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Grinde, uncle

The reports of the reunion stated
that the temperature for the day In
the park where the affair was held
had lowered to 108 degrees.

John Francis Wikoff and young son
Jackie of Pasadena, Calif., and Vern
E Wikoff of Los Angeles, have re
turned to their homes following a
vacation spent with various relatives
in and around Salen..
Their visit primarily was to see
their mother, Mrs. Ella A. Wikoff,
I who makes her home with the J. C.
Tibbetts in 8outh 13ib street, and
also visited with their sister and
family, the Alvin Knigs of Brush
Creek, and their brothtrs and fami
lies. Mr. and Mrs. Grant Wikoff
and Mr. and Mrs. Hiry M. Wikoff
and children, all of Silem.
Other relatives visited Included
their aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs.
E. 8. Adams of Salem, and their
rousins. the Frank Wsys of Centra)

The Wikoff family formerly lived
at Hayesville where Francis, better
known to most of nu. friends as
Jack, was a pupil in the school there.
This was the first visit to Oregon
for Mrs. Francis Wikoll.

Club Has Picnic
The Salem Junior Woman's club
will entertain with a picnic In the
Sllverton park Wednesday evening.
Members and their guests are asked
to assemble at the Woman's club
house In North Cottage street at
6:30 o'clock and go to Bilverton
from there.

To Walla Walla
Mrs. James N. Allison has return
ee to Portland after extended visits
with her son-in-law and daughter.
Colonel and Mrs. J. E. Flckel, in
Texas, and her son and daughter
in-law, captain and Mrs. Philip
Waley Allison. In Fort Lewis and is
again occupying her home in Port
land Heights.
Colonel Flckel has been assigned
for duty at the Presidio of San
Francisco, where he will be sta
tioned after August 1. and Captain
Allison has been transferred to Wal
la Walla, Wash., where he will re
port about the first of September.
Mrs. Allison will be remembered by
Salem folk as Sally Lansing.

that Miss Ruth Vance and Miss
Muriel Bentson sailed from Hono
lulu Saturday aboard the steamer,
Malolo. Miss Vance expects to
spend the summer with her par

The first week's csmpers have
closed a very successful camp. The
activities finished with an effective
ceremonial in the moss cathedral.
Girls taking part In the ceremon
ial were Laura Jean Bates, Janice
Nelson, Betty Zo Allen, Shirley
Parker, Edith Moxley. Dorothy Din
gle, Jean Buslck, Marian Moore and
Barbara Compton.
Friday night the girls took tne
first overnight hike of the season.
They left after the supper hour,
carrying their bedding to a point
not too far from the camp, return
ing next morning for breakfast.
Leaders in charge of the hike were
Barbara Compton, Genevera Se
lander, Dorothy Dingle and Mary
Eason.
The last newcomers have arrived
for the second week's camp. After
Sunday night's campfire, organiza
tion lor the next week will be com
plete. This week we have the pleas
ure of having Mrs. Elliot of Mon
mouth for our camp mother. One
new leader has also been added to
the staff, Miss Ruth ,Yocom.

Livesley, Mrs. Conrad W. Paulus
and three young sons, left Monday
morning for a stay in Vancouver,
B. C. with Mr. and Mrs. George De
Beck end the Thomas DeBeck

the armory this evening at 7:45
o'clock.
The Laurel Social Hour club will
entertain with a picnic at the Glen
Adams home Thursday evening at 6
o'clock. A no-host supper will be
served and those attending are also
asked to provide their own table
service. All families In the neigh
borhood are invited to attend.
The annual Pine Valley picnic
will be held at the Henry Lcep
home In Turner July 26, it has
been announced. All former Pine
Valley residents are Invited to at
