LABOR REBELS
HOLDING PARLEY
Washington, July 31 (Un-Labor
union leaders representing 1.390.000
workers gathered today to decide
whether to accept or spurn an
American Federation of Labor "In
surrection1 trial summons.
The "rebel" group of 13. headed
by John L. Lewis of the United
Mine workers. Incurred the wrath at
the Federation's executive council
through activities for Industrial
union organisation clashing with
the Federation's traditional craft
union policy.
Today's meeting of the "lnsurg- i
ant" committee for Industrial or
ganisation was called to consider
summons to stand trial before the
executive council August 9 on
charges of fomenting "dual union
Ism" and "Insurrection."
Decision of the Insurgents may
go far toward mending the breach
within labor's ranks or bringing
outright warfare between the two
schools of thought.
Compromise proposals were put
forward, but from neither the Lewis
camp nor from President William
Green of the Federation were there
signs of yielding.
The "insurgent" committee. It
was reported, planned to consider
an outright refusal to accept the
summons. Some conciliation moves
were under way to delay such a
move, based on the hope that fur
ther delay might make possible
some sort of compromise.
