headquarters staff of the Federal
Housing administration in co-opcr-

man of the Linn county Better
Housing committee, was held In Al
bany Friday and Saturday. Purpose
of the conference was to explain the
operation of the complete home fi
nancing played of FHA and to ac
quaint Linn county citizens of tho
availability of credit for building
and buying homes and refinancing
burdensome mortgages on existing
residence properties. The conference
was held in the chamber of com

LUMBER BOOM
SEEN AT SCIQ
Bcio The lumbering business "ap
pears to be on the verge of a sub
stantial revival in the Lyons section,
according to R. A. Brown of ' that
place, who visited Sclo relatives and
friends a few days ago.
The Etzel and Van Handel plant,
located near Lyons, is ready for
business, and the Kcech mill will
be operating before long. It was said.
The fact that most of the Hammond
equipment still Is Intact at Mill City
lends strength to the Indications
and hopes that operations may be
resumed there In the spring, at the
latest, In the opinion of those who
have kept in touch with the situa
tion there.
Brown was connected with timber
and logging operations for years In
the Lyons and -Mill City districts,
also at Salem and elsewhere. He suf
fered permanent Injuries In the
work and has not been able to
"hit the ball" vigorously in recent
years.

Clubbers Attempt
Difficult Dishes
- Bethel The 4-H club members
are now doing more difficult cook
ing. Division ! has fried breakfast
meats. Division II has made blanc
mange and vanlla pudding. Camp
cookery group has also made vanilla
pudding. -The pupils of the school
held an informal Christmas party
around the school Christmas tree
and drawn names for an exchange
of girts.

George W. Gould, owner of the
Majestic theater at Dallas, enter
tained all his young friends at a
special show Friday afternoon. Not
only did he offer a comedy, but
when he found out how many were
anxious to see the holiday offering
he Immediately made arrangements
to present his current serial picture,
the "Phantom Empire," which Is
supposed to start today, In addition
to the Capital Journal Santa Claus
pictures and then gave his friends
the opportunity to witness "Harold
Teen," a special feature.
Long before the show was ready
to start youngsters were found hi
front of the Majestic and Mr. Goiild
was becoming worried because U
might not be possible to seat them
all. His fears proved groundless and
the house was filled, though he ad
mitted he might locate six or seven
empty seats but did not know
where. All the youngest children
were admitted first and then the
older ones. Including many high
school students. Perfect order was
maintained after the show started
though the crowd of youngsters
was noisy before the doors opened.

GIVE PROGRAM
Auburn The pupils of Auburn
school presented a Christmas pro
gram Friday evening. Parents and
friends filled both rooms which were
opened Into one, with many stand
ing. Prof. McClendon made a finan
cial report that donations of cash
for candy and nuts, from the neigh
borhood amounted to $14.28. The
major portion of the money was
spent for candy, some for tree trim
mings, with a balance of 13 cents
left. The program included:

Christmas tree on Main street Fri
day afternoon and -sang- oarols. -They
marched from the school at
2 o'clock in double file and guided
by the teachers assembled under the
direction of Miss Wolfer, critic tea
cher. As they left the tree they sang
their recessional caroling song-,

hear the children slug, despite the
cold north wind which was blowing.

has recently become avare of a new
distinction In that two of its com
munity residents are descendants of
presidents of the United States. Mrs.
Joseph Kammler, whose ' maiden
name was Harding, Is a distant rel
ative of the late Warren Harding,
while Mrs. W. B. Egelston has on
her famuy tree the name of Abra
ham Lincoln.

Albany Linn democrats were told
by a number of outstanding demo
crats that because Oregon Is already
safe in the Roosevelt column, dem
ocrats of the county should concen
trate their off arts upon rolling up
majorities' also for the -senatorial,
congressional and local candidates
in the .1936 elections,. these admon
ishment being made . at. the Linn
County Young Democratic club
meeting held at the Hotel Albany.
Democrats were told to'forget fac
tional rows by W. L. Gosslin, private
secretary to Governor Martin, who
represented the governor at the
meeting, and to put forward ' the
strongest candidates, by getting to
gether before the primaries and se
lecting men who stand the best
chance of election.
