LIQUOR STORE
FIGURES DROP
For the first time since Oregon
went Into the liquor business, the
state stores and agencies have fail
ed to maintain their record for im
proving their sales month by month,
auditors' reports at liquor control
commission headquarters showed.
February's figures, which are be
ing compiled, are expected, how
ever, to restore what might be the
commission's slogan of "better busi
ness each month."
January was the first month to
require a descending curve on the
liquor store's sales graph.
From a holiday peak business in
December of (653,765.80 In total sales
and $143,223.39 net earnings, the
stores in January showed total sales
of only $377,372.50 and net earnings
of $94,094.75.
January was the poorest month
since last September, when total
sales were $343,347.75. October
showed (389,894, November $437,
422.34, and then December the near
ly two-thirds of a million mark.
The state's stores have as many
customers this year as last, how
ever. Virtually the same number
of purchaser's permits as were sold
in all of 1934 have already been is
sued so far this year, reports show.

Washington, March 21 (IP) A
lw?le class of American money
probably federal reserve notes was
said Wednesday to be the federal
government's monetary objective
over the next decade.
Widespread changes In existing
laws required before this could be
established may be forthcoming
when more immediate stages of the
recovery drive are completed.
A high government official said
"one class of money must be estab
lished in order that the govern
ment may effectively control issu
ance of money."
"It Is much easier," he said, "for
us to regulate money If there is
only one Issue than It Is with two
or more as It is now."
Steps already have been taken
to simplify Us money system, which
has consisted of seven kinds of
paper money gold certificates, sil
ver certificates, treasury notes of
1890, United States notes, federal
reserve notes, Federal Reserve bank
notes and National bank notes.
Three of these gold certificates and
the National bank notes and the
Federal Reserve bank notes have
been taken out of circulation.
Legislation probably would be
needed for the retirement of the
treasury notes and the United States
notes.
The silver certificates, backed by
sliver bullion now held In the treas
ury, might be withdrawn from cir
culation and transferred to the
federal reserve banks as was done
with the gold certificates.
Under this plan, the reserve banks
would be sole holders of gold and
silver certificates issued against ac
tual gold and silver In the treas
ury. A definite ratio of silver cer
tificates thus could be established.
This, It was said, might be the
solution of the administration's pro
gram for a "managed currency,"
details of which have not been re
vealed. It was believed possible
that a varying of the gold and sil
ver certificate backing of the notes
could then help gauge the purchas-
