ACREAGE YIELD
WILL BE BASIS
IN IRRIGATION
Salt Lake City, Utah, Dec. 7 (IP)
A desire to get the greatest good
from each acre of land is the rea
son for the government's concurrent
policies of reclamation and acreage
retirement, the national reclamation
conference was informed today.
Better crops can be grown more
cheaply on irrigated acres while
many sections of land now culti
vated would return more benefit to
the nation If they were converted
into forest lands. Senator James P.
Pope. Dcm., Ida., said in a speech
prepared to be read to the confer
ence by President Marshall N. Dana,
Portland. Ore.
The Idaho senator, n strong de
fender of planned reclamation and
development of waste lands ns ex
emplified by irrigation projects in
Idnho, declared there was no con
flict between waste land salvage and
acreage retirement.
"The question is one of practical
economy as to which lands should
be converted into forests and which
lands should continue to be culti
vated." he said.
Pope pointed out that in 1929 only
four per cent of all harvested crops
in the United States came from
irrigated acres. But, according to
the 1930 agricultural census, acre
age value of the irrigated harvest
was $01.50 while average value from
other acres was $22.32.
A farmer on an irrigation project
can produce crops vastly superior
in yicia ana quality to those grown
elsewhere in the United States," he
said. "Individuals receive a greater
income for their labors and invest
ment," he said If they work irri
gated soil.
E
Dublin LP) There has been quite
a spot of bother in County Sligo and
County Mayo among tho women de.
votces of the old Irish game of hurt
ing. The trouble in Sligo began
when the local "world series" was
won by the Curry club. Somebody
threw out a hint that the play of
the Curry women was a little too
Amazonian to be true in fact, ib
was alleged that one of the Curry
women players really was a man
masquerading In women's clothes,
Tempers cot so nulled that the
County Sligo board of the Irish Wo
men's Hurling league has had to in
stitute an inquiry. The bother in
County Muyo can all be traced down
to an argument about the right
length for a woman hurler s skirts.
Ballintubber Women's Hurling
club administered a sound lousing to
Aughagowei club. Aughngower im
mediately lodged a protest that Bal
lintubber s skirts were longer than
the regulation one inch below tho
knee, As a result, Ballintubber was
deprived of their win and the match
was awarded to Aughagower.
All Ireland Ls now waiting for
Ballintubber's next move.
