of potatoes but A. F. Elklns &
Sons of the Helmlck parte district
are planting 115 acres of the Gar
net variety of potatoes this year.
This Is a comparatively new variety
that Is generally sold to the call'
fomla markets for seed purposes.
Ralph Kester of the Suvcr dis
trict Is one of the few dairymen of
this county that cuts his hay before
putting it Into the mow. Mr. Kester
reports that he finds It just as
heap to cut It In as pulling It in
with a hay fork. Like most other
farmers, Mr. Kester has a fine hay
srop that will tax the capacity of
is barn.

in the J. H. Mulkey estate north
)f Monmouth, This farm Is operat

Ernest Zielesch of the Parker dis
trict has planted a field of Ladlno
llover which he plans on irrigating
with water from the Lucklamute.
Mr. Zielesch already has an under
ground pipe system Installed with
Khich to carry the water to the
Held. This is the first large piece
If Ladlno clover In that part of
folk county.
An interesting experiment Is be
iig carried on by Felix Comegys of
the Perrydale district. Mr. comegys
la irrigating red clover for the pur
pose of trying to Increase the seed
field. A heavy hay crop was cut off
f the land later than it would or
dinarily be cut. Following this the
ground was watered.
J. D. Edlger who lives on the
highway east of Dallas has found
that an application of limerock
made In 1929 has enabled him to
grow a fine crop of vetch every
year since. This year Mr. Edlger
harvested a hay crop of about three
tons per acre. According to Mr. Edl
ger he had been unable to grow
.vetch on that particular land until
he limed It.

CALLS CONVENTION

Scout encampment at Adclboden,
Switzerland.
They wore woods green scout
dresses and bats. A troop of New
York Girl Scouts saw them off.
Ahead of them are two weeks In
Switzerland, three days In Paris
and three In London before they
return to the united states.
"We want to see everything,'
said Margaret Davis, 17, a vivid.

Cal. "Especially Westminster Abbey
and the old Curiosity Shop."
Marguerite Manlon, of Firth,
Idaho, small despite her 19 years,

the youngsters have a four-day
program of every conceivable kind
of child activity such as games,
movies, story telling, swimming un
der the supervision of a hostess.
They even have a registration fee
and now are considering the ad
visability of forming an organiza
tion of their own and electing offi
cers, according to Mitchell Wolf

chairman. While Jaycces are trans
acting big business, the kids will be
in the playroom making good use
of the merry-go-rounds, sand piles,
croquet games, hobby horses, etc.

risked his life to save his dog, Os
car Kellum, 76, was given a sliver
medal by the National Humane So
ciety. Kellum lost a leg when he
dashed In front of a freight train
and saved his dog, an 11-year-old
pedigree English setter.

Oakland, Calif., June 21 im Aft
er Miss Margaret Davis, 22-year-old
former University of Oregon
student, had once agreed to be
married to Frederick F. Sullivan,
26, and the date was all set for
this coming Saturday, she wasnt
going to let any obstacles stand In
the way.
Miss Davis arrived at the mar
riage license bureau yesterday only
to be told firmly her fiancee would
have to apply with her In person.
She had not expected to see him
until he had finished work for the
day, and she knew only he was
time-keeper "on one of the bridge
projects." The marriage license bu
reau closes at 5 and If it went over
another day, the wedding bells
osjoldn't ring until Monday, accord
ing to California law.
The bride-to-be announced she
had travelled 000 miles from her
home In Portland to be married to
Sullivan Saturday, and Saturday It
would be. It took nearly four hours
of telephoning to locate Sullivan,
at work on the Oakland-San Fran
cisco Bay bridge project. He hast
ily dropped work and hurried to
the county clerk's offices, arriving
Just a few minutes before closing
time.
The wedding will be Saturday.

creased 96,400 workers during May
while weekly payrolls of the same
month climbed $2,463,000 over April,
