A statement ascribed to Secre tary of Agriculture Wallace that domestic and world prices of wheat would work closer together during the present year led to a general liquidating sales on the part of holders of wheat on a market bare of any aggressive damand. Wild fluctuations followed the 5 -cent fall of the market, with heavy stoo loss selling a feature. This was the eighth successive day of declining prices for wheat in Chicago, It was noted as signi ficant that the Liverpool wheat market closed today, 12 V cents a bushel under the Chicago May de livery, compared with 18 cents dis count Monday. Contributing; to weakness of the Chicago market was arrival m nearly 50 carloads of wheat from Kansas City bought I or Chicago handlers. Wheat closed feverish, S-S cents under yesterday's finish, May 74J.-75, July 75-75; corn un changed to higher, May 43H-U July 45S--i; oats H off to up. and provisions unchanged to 15 cents down. Chicago, April 19 (P) Wheat prices on the board of trade broke five cents a bushel late today un der pressure of heavy liquidation that followed a statement ascribed to Secretary of Agriculture Wal lace that domestic and world prices of wheat would be closer together during the present year. The drop waa the maximum per mitted under present trading regu lations. At the close of liquidation prices scored a rebound of two cents from the day's low. The market In early trading had lacked aggressive demand with mild fluctuations fol lowing the fall caused In part by the execution of stop loss orders. It was the eighth consecutive trading day that wheat prices on the board have dropped. May wheat- at the Inside figure sold at the lowest level of the sea son with the exception of October 17, when It was down 714 cents a bushel. The September offering sold at a new low but a broad de mand developed on the decline, with commission houses and short sellers buying freely. Routine news attracted little no attention. Dry weather and dust storm reports were received from the northwest . Material downturns In wheat val uea early today followed Washing ton official forecasts of wheat mar ket adjustment to a world level Uils year. For the time being, re ports of unfavorable crop conditions in domestic spring wheat territory were neglected. Opening H-l'A lower. May 76H-V wheat after ward held near the Initial limits Com started at K- decline, and subsequently rallied. Too Much Shooting Wearisome to Wife Chicago, April It IIP) Mrs. Mry Plckley does not ohject at least not wry much to her husband Thomas, beln In the beer business But slie has grown weary of dods tng bullets aimed at him, she san in a separate maintenance but ADVANCE IN LOCAL BUTTER MART TODAY Portland. April 10 (IP Butter ad vanced one to one and one-half cents a pound today. But ter fat also advanced. While there continues, as usual. much backbiting In the egg trade quotations are generally being main tained here at the recent advance to 17c for extras with oversize at 19c. There has been no change In buying values. While California strawberries were steady as a rule for the day, some offerings showed very er-1 ratic values. Top stuff generally! commanded $1.25 crate for 24s. There continues Insufficient Ore gon s to establish a price. Fractional price loss Is showing for country killed calves here as a result of recent cuts In the live stock price. Hogs are about steady but spring lambs are down i to 3c pound. Low prices on old potatoes has somewhat increased sales volume again locally although no buying at country points Is suggested because of the great accumulation In Port land storage. Lower prices continue to be named for Texas and Florida new potatoes as well as for Hawaii of ferings with the formal offering of new crop California garnets. Whites from there are due within a few days. Good celery is very scarce. Best lettuce from Sacramento Is firmer. Asparagus Is down sharply. Oreen beans again slightly lower. Cut of 20c hundred pounds In sugar effective. Some old local cabbage Is again oiierea around l'-.-c pound. STOCK PRICES STATIONARY AS BONDS ADVANCE New York, April 19 (LP) Stocks moved irregularly today with deal ings light. Grains, especially wheat, fluctuated widely; cotton at one time was off $1 a bale. Bonds ad vanced. Early afternoon saw wheat drop sharply with the May and July positions off the limit of fluctua tion for a single day 5 cents a1 bushel. It later rallied. Cotton broke more than a dol lar a bale. It, too, rallied. Stocks were only momentarily affected. Silver and rubber were unperturbed. Measured by the averages, the stock market did practically noth ing. Small gains In rails and steadi ness In utilities were offset by a mild decline in the Industrial aver age. Gold mining shares were weak on announcement of imposition of a 10 per cent tax on gold by the Dominion of Canada. Silver issues lower for a time, rallied when it was learned the president had agreed to meet with representatives of the silver interests. Copper is sues were steady most of the day. Crucible steel preferred rose a point to a new high for the year on a statement directors would be ask ed to nay some of the accumulated dividends If business continued to hold up. Gains of 1 to 2 points were made by U. 8. Rubber first preferred, and American Smelting. Steels firmed late. Ralls were higher on Indications of another rise tn car loadings. Motors, except Auburn were slightly higher. QUICK CLEAN-UP OF ONION CROP Portland, April 19 m With prob, ably not more than six cars unsold in all positions, the formal closing of the season for the sale of old crop onions at Oregon primary points is scheduled for the next few days. A quick cleanup is suggested as a result of the recent sharp im provement in demand. The latest sale was at $1 and sacks. About 30 carloads are held in Portland storage and these finally will drift upon the market which Is firmer locally and quite active with sales by wholesalers to retailers reaching $1.50. Most of the trade Is In 2s, but these are firmer as a re sult of the shortage of Is, and the higher price on the latter. The first new crop Bermuda type onions are due In Portland in a few da vs. meaning that the old season will practically close with arrival of the new stock, a condition not gen erally shown.
