The Southwest corner of Commercial
and Center streets was leased in March
1929 by Frank Doolittle who has since done
much to build one of Salem's really Super
Service Stations.
Mr. Doolittle built the building and in
stalled the equipment that makes up this
huge establishment, the largest Union.Oil
products dealer in the state of Oregon
"Frank" as Mr. Doolittle is known to
his thousands of friends is a harness maker
by trade, learning the business by working
for his father who was an old time harness
maker. It took Frank seven years to learn
the trade and seven minutes to find that he
couldn't use it.
The result was that he decided to get in
on the business of supplying harness to the
"gasoline horse" in t he way of Goodyear
tires. He sells and distributes 8500 tires a
year in Marion and Polk counties besides!
caring for the vulcanizing work of many
Salem dealers. The vulcanizing depart
ment is equipped with Goodyear factory
machines capable of handling the largest
bus tires and operated by Hobart Smith, ex
perienced Goodyear factory vulcanizer.

Is a fine thing" said Mr. Doolittle. "We have
shortened the hours of our employees which
virtually means an increase in wages of
20, we have hired four additional men to
make up the shortage, this gives us a total
of 14 employees and while prices have not
Increased sufficient to make up the differ
ence we feel that everybody giving and do
ing his share will help us all in the long run.
We have not tried to get rich quick but
rather have contented ourselves with a
small profit conducting our business to fur
nish employment to the greatest number of
men by giving a good service at reasonable
prices to this we attribute our success in
Salem."
