Plan Scholarship
Loan Benefit Tea
Prominent among social events
during the coming week will be the
scholarship loan fund silver tea to
be given next Wednesday afternoon,
January 27, from 2 to 6:30 o'clock In
the Woman's club building under
the sponsorship of the Salem Wom
an's club. A benefit affair Is held
annually for the scholarship loan
fund by the club women, and pro
ceeds are turned over to the state
federation's loan fund where it Is
drawn upon by students In Oregon
colleges and universities.
Particular emphasis Is being plac
ed upon the need of the fund this
year, to keep young people In school
rather than have them competing
with the unemployed for situations
and also because of the heavier de
mand on the fund since parents and
others supporting students in schools
are not able to help them as In pre
lous years.
The educational- department of
the club, headed by Mrs. J. C. Nel
son, is in charge of arrangements
for the afternoon, and Mrs. Walter
Spaulding, social chairman for the
year, is in charge of the seining and
tea arrangements. A, program mill
be given.
Mrs. Julius Meier was compli
mented with an informal bridge
luncheon Tuesday by Mrs. Fritz
Slade, with covers placed for eight.
Mrs. Slade also entertained for
members of her bridge club with a
luncheon and cards Thursday,
with Mrs. Louis Lachmund, Mrs.
W. H. Lytle and Mrs. O. F. John
son as additional Jests.

Installed
Officers of Hanna Rosa court,
Order of the Amaranth, were in
stalled with impressive ceremonies
Wednesday night at the Masonic
temple. Grand officers from the
state order and visitors from
Amaranth courts in Portland and
Eugene, together with oilier guests,
attended the installations.
Mrs. Ins Hewitt was installed as
royal matron, and T. A. Raffety
as royal patron, with Jay B. He
witt acting as the Installing pa
tron, assisted by Mrs. Verlie Ellis,
Installing marshal; Bull Halik, in
stalling aide; Mrs. Maude Bat ley of
Portland, installing prelate; and
Mrs. Grace Zosel. installing musi
cian. Mrs. Cora Raffety acted as
the coronation matron and Mrs.
Ellis as the uncrowning matron
with Mrs. E. B. Gabriel as crown
bearer.

An Informal reception Tuesday
afternoon at the social meeting of
the American War Mothers com
plimented the new officers of the
Salem chapter and the retiring of
ficers. The social affair followed a
brief business session. Mrs. Mar
guerite Elliott presided as toast
mistress and Impromptu remarks
were made complimenting retiring
officers and encouraging new of
ficers. A gift was presented Mrs.
A. A. Lee, former president of the
chapter.
The program Included vocal
numbers by Ila Hoffer and June
Judson, pupils of Miss Lena Belle
Tartar, and a piano duet by Adella
Dtekman and Sophia Hughes, pupils
of Mrs. Joy Turner Moses.

present.

Mill City The regular meeting of
the Mill City Woman's club was
held Tuesday evening at the home
of Mrs. Sig Jepsen, when a surprise
program was presented In charge
of Mrs. Velma Pearson, Mrs. Grace
Taylor and Mrs. A. A. Holthouse. A
good attendance was present to en
joy the games and picture show
which was presented, Mrs. Hal Ladd
being the operator of the movie
machine. In the drawing contest
Miss Zella Halley took first prize
and Mrs. John Dawes second.
During the business meeting sev
eral reports were made and plans
were laid for the annual guest day
with Mrs. C. Cline as chairman of
the day. A decision was reached
to hold a dinner the same as last
year, that occasion having proved
very successful. A definite date will
be announced later.
The next meeting, which will be
held on Tuesday, February 3, will
