COLUMBIA AIR
ROUTE TERMED
FLYING TUNNEL
Washington (IP) Aviators In the
Northwest fly nightly through a na
tural tunndl and live to tell about
It.
This "tunnel," which recently has
seen llgmed under the direction of
tlie Aeronautics Branch of the de
partment of Commerce, is bounded
on two sides by the walls of the Co
lumbia River gorge, on the bottom
by the river, and overhead by fog.
Perilous as It sounds. It is safe com
pared with the air region over the
gorge, due to fog, difficulties of
terrain, and heavy forestation.
As a result the Idea of routing
commercial planes right through
the lower reaches of the gorge It
self was hit upon. Here the wind
keeps the route virtually free from
fog, and all that Is necessary Is to
follow a straight course to get
through the 50-mlles of tunnel
from Portland. Ore., to Pasco Wash.
To this end flashing lights nave
been Installed all along the route,
green on one side and red on the
other so the flier will make no mis
take In his direction. In addition
two powerful beacons have been In
stalled on each side, and one at each
extremity o the gorge. Aviators now
may fly at a level of less than 30
feet In case of low fog. keep be
tween the lights, and emerge un
scathed. PEIPING GREETS
Pelping (IP) Thousands of Tibetan
Buddhists here are giving a hearty
welcome to the "Chang Chia," living

the most powerful leaders In the
Buddhist world. He Is paying his
first visit to the old capital. Chief

Mongolia, accompanied him.
The living Buddha dresses In a
gown of yellow satin, a purple jacket
and wears a Chinese hat Inset with
precious stones.
He said he came here to pay his
respects to General Chang Hseuh
llang. chief representative of the
central government In North China.
General Chang has been a consist
ent friend of Buddhism, although
not himself a professing Buddhist,
and has entertained the Panchen
Lama. Living Buddha of Tibet In
Mukden.
The Inner Mongolian visitors hope
to persuade General Chang to im
prove conditions In that district.
Bandits have become active every
where on account of civil wars, and
trade lias almost completely disap
peared. Thousands of Inner Mon
golians are destitute.

LINDY'S HOME
IN MINNESOTA
Little Palls. Minn. (LP) The con

the "flying colonel."
Perhaps the least known place
is Lindbergh's boyhood home, a
short distance south of here.
The tourist who seeks bis birth
place will disappointed If be
expects to find the road well
marked. He is told to drive "west
of the Mississippi river bridge,
then turn left at the Swedish
church, this side of Pine Grove
park." Upon following these di
rections the tourist finds an or
dinary sand road.
After following the road tor a
mile and a half, he enters a "state
game refuge," really the first ef
fort of Minnesota to honor Lind
bergh. Driving through this park, one
finds, tacked to a lone evergreen
tree, an old piece ot cardboard on
which is printed the sign. "Picnic
Grounds," and in smaller letters,
"Llndy's Home."
At the left Is a dilapidated
frame house, boarded up, with
broken windows and much writ
ing, clearly visible even from the
road.
Entering the grounds an old
gentleman, wearing the star ot a
Minnesota deputy sheriff, ap
peared. "You're lookln' for Llndy's?" he
demanded. "This is it. It was a
swell place once. Now look at it. I
Tourists have made a mess of it."
Inquiry developed the Informa
tion that the Lindbergh home
stead has been the object of "un
welcome" tourists since Colonel
Charles . A. Lindbergh flew his
"Spirit of St. Louis" across the
Atlantic ocean In 1927.
"I don't mind these folks that
come up here and are polite," he
continued, "but these young folks
that climb Into the house, break
windows, and the like, and steal
even the locks oft doors, get my
goat!"
He said that Minnesota, which
has taken over the grounds for
the purpose of reconstructing the
house In Its original state, and
make a state park of it, is doing
