Woodburn Miss Irene Forsythe,
a woodbum girl who arrived last
week alter live years spent as I
missionary in China, will be greet'
ed by the Missionary societies of
Aurora, Gervals, Bethel and Wood
burn at the Woodburn Presbyterian
church next Thursday afternoon,
July 23.
Miss Forsythe will talk to the
members of her experiences In
China during the five year's work
ana mucn interest is manifested in
her appearance In her home town.
After the meeting light refresh
ments will be served on the lawn at
the manse. A cordial Invitation Is
extended to the women of the vi
cinity.
Next Sunday morning Miss Forty
the will sneak In the pulpit of the
Presbyterian church at 11 o'clock
and at the Bethel church In the

Stay ton Mr. and Mrs. W,
Weddle ore making a motor vaca
tlon of several weeks duration and
are not expected to return for an
other week. They visited their
daughter, Mrs. Roy Hiatt at Rose
burg and with Mrs. Weddles' sister
near wenatchee. Wash., and ac
cording to a- letter received by the
family here they are now In Can
ada. The funeral parlor Is in charge
of Wendell Weddle during the ab
sence of his father.

SUVER MAKES PLANS
FOR GRANGE PICNIC
Suver The Suver Orange had a
very Interesting meeting of the
grange Saturday evening In the
Woodman hall. At the business
meeting plans were made for the
Pomona grange meeting which will
be held Saturday, July 25 at Hel
mlck park In the form of a picnic
with Suver grange as hostess and
Monmouth grange assisting. A pro
gram will be given in the afternoon.
Yvonne Kerr and Margaret Doug
las will represent this grange with
readings.
After the business meeting a short
program was offered. George Plov
gave a talk on "How I try to pre
vent weeds."
The Polk county club picnic will
be held July 35 at Hclmlck park
the same time as the grange pic
nic. Ten members of the club from
Suver plan to attend this meeting.

Stayton Kenneth Yeoman of
Brogan Is visiting at the home of

man. Yeoman Is working on a cat
tle ranch In eastern Oregon, and
brought a load of cattle to Portland
for the market. M. Yeoman has
left for La comb for the purpose of
taking up bis work as lire ranger.

REMOVED FROM HOSPITAL
Turner Mrs. Mearl Ensley and
Infant daughter, Dorothy Louise,
were removed to their Salem home
last week from the Bungalow Ma
ternity hospital, and are getting
along satisfactorily. Miss Hazel

is in Salem caring for mother and
baby. Mrs. Ensley was formerly

FIRST GRAIN CROP
DELIVERIES START
Sheridan The first of the 1931
grain crop of the Sheridan and
Bcllevue district was delivered the
past week and Henry Sundburg of
Sheridan claims tr.e credit for the
first delivery. This was oats and
vetch and when separated, the
vetch will bring two and three
quarters cents per pound. The crop
is Hgth over the district around
Sheridan.
Jake Duerst of the Bellevue dis
trict has Just cut a bumper crop
of white clover, which, It Is re
ported, will when sold pay for the
ground It Is planted on.
Combining will begin In many
wheat fields this week. Many fields
have already been cut with the
binder and are shocked and await
ing threshing. The best estimate
of the wheat yield Indicates an
average of probably 25 to 30 bushels
per acre. A few fields are reported
as promising a yield of 50 bushels, i

Amity The American Legion and
auxiliary of Amity held a picnic
Sunday at the Yamhill river on the
Bur Tot ten place near McMinnvllle.
The day was spent in swimming,
pitch In j horseshoes and social con
versation. A picnic dinner was served
to about 30.

SHERIDAN HAS
OPENING SOON
Sheridan Workmen are pushing
the work on the Sheridan Novitiate
at Paradise View and Indications

lng, which Is being erected for pre
sent use. before the scheduled time,

The details of the present build
lng have been worked out with the
firm of Dougan-Reverman. Inc., of
Portland and Father Nathaniel
Purcell, supervisor at Paradise
View farm, who was an architect
before he entered the priesthood
Revennan is In actual charge of
the construction. This building,
which Is temporary, contains 11,000
square feet of floor space and will
house the students while the main
stands on the ridge of the hill. 600
feet above the surrounding valleys
ana its wings command a magnl
ficlent view.
The temporary building will be
converted later Into a gymnasium
or recreational building. The par
titions installed for rooms are tem
porary and will be removed as soon
as the permanent building Is ready.
Tne supply ox water for the No
vitiate has been a paramount issue
in the selection of the Paradise
View site for the college and for
a time stood in the way of early
construction work. An attempt was
maae to secure drinking water from
the Sheridan water supply. The
water problem has not been fully
solved but a well has been drilled
at the foot of the hill and if this
falls to meet all the requirements
for water a main will be built to
the Yamhill River and water pum
ped to the reservoir.
About 60 boys are expected the
latter part of this month for the
opening of school work August 2.
They come from Washington, Mon
tana, Idaho and Oregon and their
work will be that beyond the high
school.

bed on account of paralysis but she

an all day guest and Mr. Loggan

state fair grounds Sunday. Ashley
M. AsplnwaU and his wife Ellen E.
AsplnwaU with their children came
to Oregon front South Dakota in
1902 and bought farm at Brooks
on which tome member of the fam
ily has lived ever since. AsplnwaU
died In 1812 but Mrs. AsplnwaU Is
still living and resides In Salem.

ceived word of the recent honors
bestowed upon his cousin, Dr. David
Robertson at Baltimore, Maryland,
when he was inaugurated president
of Gouchcr college. Mrs. Herbert
Hoover presided over the exercises
adding the degree of doctor of laws,
to her honorary degree at the im
pressive services.
Ranch Is Bought
Mt. Angel Jacob Dlehl pur
chased the 44-acre ranch from
William Elchoff, located two miles
east of town. Jacob Dlehl s son.

ranch. Mr. Elchoff Intends re
tiring and will move to town.

her home In honor of Mrs. Ernest
Palfrey, who with her husband and
small child of Dinuba, Calif., an
visiting at the home of Palfrey's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Palfrye.
Cards were the diversion of tha
afternoon and Mrs. Palfrey won
high score at bridge. Mrs. Palfrey
was also presented with a guest
prize by the hostess.

Monitor Youth Is
Kicked By Horse
Silverton Junior, the 34 year-
old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H.
Jacobson of near Monitor, waa
brought to the Silverton hospital
Saturday, suffering with a broken
jaw caused by a horse kicking him
in the face. It was also found neces
sary to take several studies on his
lace.
Taylors Have Guest
Molalla Mrs. Mary Wherrett,
who Is attending the summer ses
sion of the state normal school at
Monmouth, spent the week-end as
a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon J.
Taylor. They were formerly, ac
quainted at Oakville, Wash., where
Mrs. Wherrett had the honor of be
ing the first woman teacher. It has
been 25 years since Mrs. Wherret
and the Taylors have seen each
other. She taught a unit of the
Dallas school at the Willamette
Valley Logging camp last term and
will teach the same school next
term.
