MYSTERY SHROUDS
CLOSED CAR TRYST
Continued from p.. 1)
lts occurjanU. man and a woman,
didn't leave tne ear. No one thought
much about It then, but when tne
same thing happened day after day.
folk began to wonder. Ana it u
still happening.
Usually the Colorado sedan ar
rived quite early In the morning. The
man and the woman tay in tne
car. apparently talking quietly to
gether. Never nave tney spoken to
anyone else except tne two cops,
and thev sealed the Una of the cops.
Sometimes the mysterious visitors
bring their lunch and eat from a
basket at noon. Sometimes they
bring a baeket dinner for the eve-nine-
meal, and eat it in the car.
At times they have driven away at
noon and returned alter mncn.
Sometimes the man smokes an af-
f ..-lunch clear.
They are a good -looking pair, say
th neighbors. They dress well
enough, and their car Is as good as
the average on a downtown street.
They cause no trouble. They attend
strictly to their own business. D and
Winter street Intersection is puouc
nroDertv. Thev have a right mere.
No one denies it. But, gosh! How the
folks there wish they knew what it's
all about. , J
-v when an officer was called
he talked quietly with the pair for
a minute or so, then went away. The
man who had called the policeman
went to headquarters and sought out
the officer to find out the result of
his investigation.
"Them people are all right," said
the officer, poker-faced.
Again an officer was called, some
davs later. He opened the door of
the sedan, and the women who were
peeking from their curtains tried to
guess what was being saw. mey aw
the man take a paper trom nu pm;.
et and hand it to the officer. The
cop glanced at it and handed It
hank then he sauntered away.
Someone hunted up that cop also
to find out what he knew. The cop
shrugged, looked far away, said no
thing. And his questioner went
home to disappoint his family and
friends who thought be might bring
the answer.
Some think they are detectives.
Others guess they are a pair of lov
ers who are lured by the romantic
atmosphere at D and Winter streets.
Some who think along more drab
lines have an Idea that they are
sizing up the traffic In the neigh
borhood with the possibility of set
ting up some kind of business out
there.
Anvway. It's a mystery. And Salem
hain't had a mystery for some time.
PLANS TO BUILD 5

room apartments. The investment
will be sround 150.000. They will
be owned exclusively by Hansen.
One of the structures will face on

made by Adam Engle a few years
ago when he Intended to duplicate
his apartments a block or so south
on Capitol street. However, Han
sen states that his plans and de
signs will be entirely different than
those which Engle had planned to
use in the first instance. The oth
er apartment will face on Nebras
ka avenue Just across the alley to
the east of the building on Capitol
street. Both will be of the same
style, equipment and Interior fin
ish. The two apartment houses will
be heated by a central steam heat
ing plant. Every apartment will
have electric refrgleratlon, electric
stove, with latest toilet and bath
facilities and every other modern
device used in apartment houses.
In addition to the 20 apartment
30 garages for use of the tenants
will also be built on the property.

city on Chemeketa street near 12th

As soon ss the elty council
pastes on the permit which I un
derstand win be at the nest meet-

possible,'' stated Hansen. "I In
tend to make these apartments of
a design which will make them a
very attractive addition to this
prominent street."
