when the chamber of commerce, as
sisted by the parent-teachers' as
sociation gave each child a treat.
The teachers sponsored the pro
gram, which was given by children
in the grades and consisted o(
songs, recitations and playlet, car
ols were also sung by a large group
of children marching Into the room
ait the beginning of the program.
Mayor George Keech will be host
to all children coming to the St&r
theater Tuesday. Last year, over
300 children received a treat.

closed Friday afternoon for the
Christmas vacation and will resume
their regular schedule on Monday,

TO OBSERVE XMAS
Jefferson The Methodist church
will observe the Christmas season
Sunday. The Sunday school will
meet as usual at 10 o'clock a. m. and
at It o'clock preaching services will
be held. The pastor, Rev. D. George
Cole, will bring the Christmas
message to the congregation, the
subject to be "A Christmas Gift."
The various departments of the
church cooperating with the Sun
day school will present the Christ
mas entertainment at 7:30 o'clock

Jefferson The operetta "Christ
inas with the Old Woman In the
Shoe." presented by the grade
school Thursday evening at the Ma
sonic hall, was well received by a
large audience. The children were
exceptionally well trained and en
acted their parts to perfection. The
teachers In charge of the play de
serve a great deal of credit and
praise as well as their pupils.
Miss Bertha Dillon had charge of
the music, assisted by Genevieve
Wied, Miss Elda Reese, the dialogue,
Miss Prances Pierce the stage and
Mrs. Flo Youn the costumes.

Mrs. Elmer Olsen, Is again Hi, this
time with pneumonia, and has with
her a trained nurse, Mrs. Lang of
the Salem Oeneral hospital. At
the present writing Thelma Is much
better and her fever is down.
Thelma had a major mastoid op
eration when four years old,. a maj
or operation for sinus three months
ago.
DALLAS PASTOR
GOSPEL SPEAKER
Dallas Rev. James A. Smith,
pastor of the Presbyterian church
has been chosen one of the speak
ers on the program held Monday
night at the union gospel meeting
in Portland.
He announces that the Presby
terian Sunday school will present
their Christmas program Monday
evening at 7:30 o'clock. The en
tertainment consists of a four act
pageant portraying the Bethlehem
scene. The church choir will as
sist as there are a number of songs
in connection with it. The choir,
directed by Mrs. MacOregor, will
give a sacred Christmas concert
Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock to
which a cordial invitation is extend
ed to the public.
Rev. Smith goes to Klamath Falls
Tuesday where he will spend
Christmas with his daughter, Mrs.
Earl Reynolds.

CEREMONY HAS

Kings Valley A Joint Installa
tion of all the granges of Benton
county was held at Philomath with
Mary s River Orange as host. Miss
Bertha Beck, state grange secretary.
acted as installing officer. The work
was most Impressively and beauti
fully done.
Following the Installation work a
program was riven each grange
contributing one number. The au
dience enjoyed the vocal and in
strumental selections, the readings,
the drill and the stunt offered for
the amusement The last two furn
ishing the humor for the evening.
A "Hayseed Drill" was given by
Mary's River grange with the
women dressed In sunbonnets and
old fashioned clothing, each carry
ing a garden rake while the men
wore overalls, had large bandanas
tied around their necks and wore
large straw hats, each armed with
a hoe.
King's Valley stunt brought much
laughter as the audeince beheld
their past masters. SI Pratt of
Mary's River. Ed Blake of Mountain
View and E. R. Jones of Willamette
granges, endeavoring to make dress
es from newspapers for the three
Kings Valley women, Mrs. Cosgrove,
Mrs. Allen and Mrs. woods.
Past-master Bottger of Summit
Past-mater Bullivant of Willamette
and Pomona-mater Kent, acted as
judges and timekeepers. Jones was
declared winner.

NAVAL MAN HOME "
Independence Edward Imbler,
son of Mrs. Hattie Imbler. of this
city, and who Is enlisted 4n the
navy with U. S. 8. Saratoga, now
in San Pedro, is here on furlough
visiting his mother. This is his
first visit In two years. He will
leave in a few days on a three
months' trip which mill take them
through the Panama canal.
COMEDY IS SUCCESS
Independence The Huntley
Comedy company, composed of Mr.
and Mrs. l. L Huntley and son.
Gordon, and Mrs. Joe Rogers, all
of the Greenwood district, went to
Eola recently and put on a two-act
comedy, as a benefit for the com
munity club of Eola. Mrs. Rogers
gave several Scottish dances, among
them the "Highland Fling."
