ished the STarcl for the Oervals-
Mt. Angel road recently finished.
Charles Hoyt. who operates a
plant on the Atdqua which was
shut down for repairs, reports tt Is
back crushing rock again atth a
bout two weeks work yet. Much
of tliis gravel has gone onto the
Silverton-Monitor road.
Walter Fearmine, patrolman north
of Salem, is making arrangements
to secure some gravel from the
Pierce Oollard plant for work on
about a mile of road in the Clear
Lake district near the Livesley hop
yard. Grading work was done on
this stretch this summer and some
gravel put on but It Is hoped to
finish graveling It before the
vere winter sets in. Robert Cole,
road patrolman, also is planning
to do some leveling work In the

PLAN TO MAKE
ROADS SAFER
County Roadmaster Johnson with
Commissioners Smith and Porter
Monday visited two locations on
market roads where dangerous con
ditions had been reported.
One of these on the Sllvertoo-lit.
Angel road aouth of Mt. Angel,
where there is a long curve on a
hill has been the scene o( acci
dents due to too fast driving on a
illppcry pavement. Though the
road is guarded by a white fence a
number of autos have skidded and
crashed through the fence. The
court will probably make plans for
a change In the alignment of the
road and widen it so that danger
of skidding will be largely elimin
ated. Tlie other place looked over Is
the approach to the Pudding river
bridge between Mt. Angel and
Woodburn on the paved road. A
number of accidents have happen
ed here. Roadmaster Johnson, who
was over the road Sunday, report
ed someone had repaired the railing
knocked out by a truck and had
dumped some screenings on the
approach. It Is likely the screen
ings will be craped off temporar
ily and the asphalt burned over
to make it rough and the screen
ings reapplied.

HILL LINE NEEDED

(Continued from page 1)
trains totaling 10,300 cars, he said
adding that delay In an emergency
might be fatal.
Under cross examination the wit
ness told Evan J. Foulds. Boutliern
Pacific attorney, that exUtinc north
and south transportation lines are
not adequate unless the war ae-
nartment should have ample warn
ing of an impending emergency. He
said it would take more man tr
days to handle an army corps on
one railroad line.
Htehwavs would Kreatly a.t in
time of emergency, he Bald, but
pointed out that motor transporta
tion la regarded by the war de
partment as inadvisable, slow and
not economical for d manors ftresu
er than 200 miles. He explained it
would take 139 miles of highway to
hold an array corps uned vp wiw
transport trucJu at regulation dis
tances.
Colonel McBrlde also pointed out
thai highways are not long depend
able under beery war traffic be
n thpv miirklv wear out.
Concentration notnta, In h 1 a
opinion, would be located near Ban
Francisco, Sacramento and Stock
ton in event of attack on the coast.
These points, he admitted, would
he nearer the const and more like
ly to be st tacked by haitil airplanes
than parts of the Southern lines
into the northwest.
