OREGON GIVEN EDGE OVER WASHINGTON GRIDDERS

WEBFOOTTEAM
RECORD BETTER
THAN HUSKIES
Eugene W For the tint time In
many wagons, the University of
Oregon football team Is considered
to have more than an even chance
to defeat the University of Wash
ington Huskies at Seattle next Sat
urday because of the showing last
year.
Oregon's Webfoots were victorious
over Washington last year by 27 to
0. The doubtful strength of the Hus
kies this year is illustrated In its
6 to t tie with Montana and Its
crushing defeat by the University of
Southern California, 48 to 0, is an
other point in Oregon's favor.
The rivalry between the two
schools, existing since Oregon's vic
tory in the first game in 1900, has
been emphasized In the past few
years more than during earlier days.
In 1924 Oregon surprised the con
ference by defeating the Huskies
In an upset at Eugene, 7 to 3.
However, the greatest battle be
tween the two schools was waged at
Seattle the year following. That year
Washington won the Pacific coast
conference title, but in the final
game of the a season was nearly
knocked from' Its position when an
Oregon team, coached by Dick
Smith, rose up to hold the Huskies
19 to 14.
The first game of Captain John
J. McEwan's era at Oregon was lost
to Washington 23 to 9 at Portland
In 1926. The next year was another
battle typical of Oregon-Washington
rivalry, but Washington won by the
last quarter spurt, 7 to 0. Last year
at Portland, the Webfoots scored
their greatest triumph over Wash
ington since the 43 to 0 win in 1900.

"A Few Variations" Ahead For Notre Dame
yROCKNEy sV rVV lfv
Outside of saying that there will be a "few variations" this fall, Knute Rockne reveals nothing about hb
plans for bis Notre Dame eleven. Captain Law, a guard, and Brill, a half, stand out as big cogs in the South
Bend machine.
BIG SQUAD AT
DALLAS HIGH
Dallas Coach Wright of Dallas
high has a tough proposition to
train the football team into shape
for a winning season, after begin
ning practice three weeks behind
all opposing teams of the schedule
with the exception of one. The
only school on the Dallas schedule
that has not played at least three
games already this season Is Sheri
dan and that team has played one
game; whereas the first game of
the season for Dallas Is scheduled
with Sheridan for October 25.
However, Coach Wright reports
an abundance of material more
than he ever had turn out before
at Dallas. After several weeks'
practice some of these new men
are showing up quite well. The
most satisfactory of them are: Fred
Keats, Glen Stevenson, Everett Mil
ler, Harold Hyde, William Cadle,
and Russell Humphreys. Bill Gar
ner, a guard and letterman of last
year, Is ill with rheumatism and
may not be able to play all season.
FIELDS WILL MEET
NEGRORINGSTER
6an Francisco IIP) Jackie Fields,
welterweight champion, will stake
his reputation if not his title in a
10 round bout here Monday night
with Gorilla Jones, clever negro
lingster from Akron, Ohio.
The pair will come In at 149
pounds, two pounds over the wel
terweight limit, with Fields a strong
favorite to defeat the cagey negro,
desDlte the latter's somewhat Im
posing record. A specialist at body
belting and continuously aggressive,
Fields is expected to set too fast a
pace for Jones.
ST. MARY'S BEATS
GONZAZA, 32 TO 0
Ran Francisco UP A crowd of
t5,000 saw Bt. Mary's college defeat
Gonzaga football stalwarts of Spo
kane, here Sunday by a 32 to 0 score
at Kezar stadium. Outplayed In the
lirst half, St. Mary's came back in
the last two periods to sweep the
Invaders off their feet.
Plus Fours Are
Not Balloons,
Man Discovers
Chicago, 7P) James Mr
has made the startling dis
covery that golf nickers may
look like a balloon, but
aren't.
Meers, who Is 66 years old,
put on a pair of plus-fours
and went out with the boys
early Sunday. The conversa
tion turned to aviation and
Meers had an idea. Inflate
the k nick ere, he figured, and
the wearer could float
through space or upon the
urfare of watcis.
With his companions he
adjourned to a filling station
and th plus-fours were
pumped full of air. The boys
then went to the roof of a
small building on the Chi
cago river bank and Meers
jumped.
Poll cement pulled him out.
M 'Tis very strange," said
Meers, wringing water from
the trousers. '"Probably It's
the bum air one gets at the
filling station nowadays."
VANDALS LOSE
TO OREGON, 34-7
San Francisco (LP) After spotting
its opponents to a 7 point start,
shortly alter the start of the game,
the University of Oregon Webfoot
football machine got started and
defeated the University of Idaho
Vandals at Portland Saturday 34 to
7. Comparison of game statistics
shows that Oregon Is about two
touchdowns better than Idaho.
Stanford continued to show that
it has a remarkable team this year,
when it trounced the Oregon Aggies
at Palo Alto 40 to 7. The Oiegontans
made-their lone tally shortly after
the start of the game when they
caught the Cardinals napping and
slipped over a long pass. .
' Washington State played true to
pre-game dope and although the
Huskies shoved over two touch
downs in rapid succession In the
first period the Cougars came to life
and emerged on the long end of a
20-13 score.
South Bend, Ind. (AP) Foxy
Knute Rockne, as nsualt Is keeping
bis football prospects under his
hat and his hat on. He promises
nothing more than "a few varia
tions" for Notre Dame's football
team this fall.
Rockne Is noted for his "elegant
variations," as the professors put
it, and be probably will uncork
something pretty fancy when his
team tactile the "impossible sched
ule" of nine tough games.
Rocknes only comment on what
he's cooking up Is an observation
to the effect taat "football moves In
cycles and there has been little new
stuff in the last 20 years." His big
fear, he says, is that his brood will
burn themselves out emotionally,
with the strain of meeting Indiana,
Navy, Wisconsin, Carnegie, Georgia
Tech, Drake, Southern California,
Northwestern and the Army.

MINNESOTA AND
PURDUE CENTER
BIG TEN TALK
Chicago (IP) Around Purdue and
Minnesota, the former a "dark
horse" at the start of the season
and the latter an admitted title
contender, the majority of Big Ten
interest centered Monday as all
conference teams began practice
fore next Saturday's games.
The favoritism toward the Goph
ers and Boilermakers was the re
sult of the ability exhibited by both
teams In games up to date, each
has shown enough real football to
create the Impression that It will
be hard to win from either.
At present Ohio 8tate is leading
the conference as the result of two
victories scored over Iowa and
Michigan, and no losses. Three
other teams Chicago, Minnesota
and Purdue have perfect records
but each of these has won only
one game. Illinois has neither vic
tory nor defeat charged to it but
the mini record Is marred by a
7-7 tie play with Iowa last Satur
day and that after Iowa had lost
to Ohio.

Cardinal And Trojan
Clash To Be Torrid;
Teams On Zero Basis
New York (AP) There should be football fireworks
sufficient for entertainment alone; every sector this week
end but the main detonation Is likely to echo from the big
oowl at paio Alto, cam. close to
85,000 spectators In this far western
What A Mull!
counterpart of Yale's famous arena
will see Stanford and Southern Cal
ifornia lght the iuse in Ihelr sensa
tional rivalry.
This clash between Cardinal and
Trojan, between the coaching sys
tems oi Pop Warner and Howard
Jones, not only figures to decide the
championship of the Pacific coast
but to have a vital bearing upon the
national title situation.
Both elevens have their eyes fo
cused on this twin goal as well as
on each other. Southern California
takes in Notre Dame and Carnegie
Tech later as part of Its drive for
national honors. Stanford winds up
its season by entertaining Red Cagle
and his Army mates, so that the In
centive to win Is about as keen as
It can possible be.
Untile last Saturday, U. S. C. was
generally expected to be the favor
ite. The Trojans were off to a fast
start and reached a peak of power
by crushing Washington 48 to 0 on
the latter's own gridiron. Stanford,
coming along more slowly, aroused
its backers by polishing off Oregon
State 40 to 7, a margin of exactly
19 points more than Southern Cali
fornia's edge over the same team.
On this basis and the fact that
Warner always has something up
his sleeve for a big game, Stanford
now rates at least an even choice.
Both have California to contend
with later. U. S. C. In fact, meets
the Golden Bears the following Sat
urday at Los Angeles, but Califor
nia, to Justify any title hopes, must
show more than it did Saturday In
beating a scrappy but subnormal
Pennsylvania team.

The newspaper said that tome of
the coach's friends advised him to
resign and then offer his services
for the rest of the seasc
