ON REFUELING
TEST CRASHES

monoplane 8an Franciscan lay at
the bottom of San Francisco bay
Wednesday, and its pilot, Donald
Templeman, former amy aviator,
who had sought to set a record for
refuellng endurance flying, was re
covering from the effects of the
plunge which ended bis undertaking
Tuesday night.
Apparently fatigued, Templeman
misjudged his distance from the
ground as he was circling Mills field
In the 96th hour of his flight. The
craft struck an electric transmission
line and fell Into the hay. a few
lcet from shore. Templeman nin
. out, unhurt. He was taken to a hos
. pital for examination to make mure
4 he had suffered no 111 effects.
The flight ended at :47 d.rl, 35
hours and 38 minutes after his take
off. He had planned to stay in the
air 40 hours to set a record for solo
endurance refueling flights. No of
ficial mark has been set for this
kind of flying, but at least one solo
flier has remained longer in the aid
wan xcmpienuui, ana wiuiouc re
fueling. Herbert J. Pahy recently
remained aloft 36 hours 56 minutes
and 3 seconds At Los Angeles, with
out taking fuel m flight.
Templeman's plane was equipped
with a special funnel device for re
fueling which permitted the pilot to
remain at the controls while the ze
fuelers replenished the gas tank. .
