Salem hospital where an X-ray was
taken. The extent of bis Injuries
has not been fully determined but

MISSIONARY SOCIETY
GUEST AT LIBBY HOME
Jefferson The W. P. M. S. of
the Methodist church met at the
home of Miss Addle Libby, on Third
street, Wednesday afternoon with
Mrs. George C. Mason as leader.
The lesson subject wis The Ex
tension Department, and several
short readings on that topic were
given by the members. Miss Addle
Libby gave an Interesting reading
entitled, The Substitute Delegate,"
and also conducted the mystery box.
At the tea hour refreshments were
served by the hostess.
Those enjoying the afternoon were

taine, Mrs. Blanche Libby, Mrs. 8. R.

Mt. Angel Mr. and Mrs. Scott
Berrick of Long Beach, Calif., are
visiting this week at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schmltx. They
are enroute on a trip to Minnesota.

quarters. Father Leo Is In Beppner,
to stay for several months; Father
Alphonse is in Condon for several
weeks, or until the regular pastor
returns from the east. Father Sebas
tian Is in New York to stay all
summer, while Fathers Vincent and
Anthony are in Kakawis, B. C. to
stop for several months.

who is here visiting her sister, Mrs.
John Harper, was presented with
one of the society's study books, on
account of her service rendered the
society 'in the past. Refreshments
were served by the hostess assisted

SHAM BATTLE HELD
BY SCOUT TROOPERS
Jefferson A sham Battle, fought
with giant fire crackers and fire
works was put on by O. Sprsgg as
sisted by W. R. Warner, scout mas
ter and Benson Spragg for the ben
efit of the Boy Scouts Tuesday
evening.
The event was staged across the
river from Jefferson on the gravel
bar and was witnessed by a number
of people together with the Scouts.
The Boy Scouts present were
Ben Smith, John Wright, Clinton
Hart, Francis Oatchell, Maurice
Mangls, Robert Hart and Lester
Stephenson. Also two prospective
members, Harvey Myers and Mario
Harris.
PAGEANT TAKING FORM
Jefferson Mr. and Mrs. D. M.
Burnett made a business trip to Eu
gene Wednesday. They report great
preparation being made for the bun
set pageant to be held July 25, 28
and 27, The men are sporting gaudy
shirts, cowboy hat and heavy crops
of whiskers, while the women are
gorgeous In old tune array, basques,
hoop skirts and sun bonnets.
GIBBONS HAVE VACATION
WWoodbum B. E. Gibbons has
been taking a two weeks' vacation
from his duties as clerk at the Union
oil station and with his wife has
spent most of the time at Newport
and other beach points. Thursday
night Mr. and Mrs. Gibbons left in
their car for Vancouver, B. O. where
they will remain until Monday.
JONES' HAVE GIRL
SUverton Word has been re
ceived of the arrival of a seven
pound baby girl born to Mr. and
Mrs. Bliss Jones of Aberdeen, Wn.
They already have a boy seven, and
a gin tnree. Jones, who Is a broth
er of Mrs. Nye Bristol of this city.

OPENS ANNUAL
CAMP MEETING
Woodburn The annual camp
meeting of the Church of God
opened Thursday in their grove just,
north of the city limits and Is being
attended by people from all over
the northwest. For more than thir
ty years this camp meeting has
been held in this same spot which
is a beautiful fir grove, with eity
water, electric lights and every con-
venlence for the campers. The meet-
intia are held in a large txbernacle
and there Is also a post office.

present and three regular services
will be held dairy with special ser
vices for the young people, Sunday
school workers and ministers. The
meetings will continue for ten days.

LEAGUE MEMBERS
Jefferson The members of the
Epworth League of the Methodist
church held a social and reception
for new members in the grove a
short distance across -the river
from Jefferson Wednesday evening.
Games and contests were indulg
ed in and later In the evening a
huge bonfire was built and lunch
served. Afterwards the candle light
service was observed and the offi
cers who were elected at a former
meeting were installed.
Under the leadership of W. R,
Warner, pastor of the church, the
league has taken up the study of
astronomy during their outdoor
meetings, which Is of great inter
est to all.
Mt. Ange-'fhe 15th anniversary
of the origination of the Sodality
dance club will be celebrated Tues
day evening, by a large anniver
sary dance in the school auditorium
in special honor of the past mem
bers. Walker Bros. old time or
chestra has been engaged for the
occasion.

house guest Miss Dorothy Eaton
of Kansas City, Mo., who spent
most of the week with them. They
now have as guests Mr. and Mrs.

North Dakota. Miller was em
ployed by Worden on the railroad
out of Fargo for ten years.

NO PARKING ZONES
PAINTED AT TURNER
Turner No parking tones have
been recently painted on the curb
and on the concrete wall across the
street on the mill race side to pre
vent automobile accidents In the
future, as have occurred in the past.
The paint is of a brilliant yellow
hue such as Is used by traffic de
partments of various cities to mark
off no parking zones.
Previous to the city council or
dering this done, cars parked in
front of the Odd Fellows building,
obstructing the view and narrowing
the corner so that two cars could
scarcely pass without danger. A
number of accidents had occurred
on this corner, and the uo parking
zones will aid motorists to avoid
accidents.

Albany A message fresh from the
missionary fields of the east was
brought to the Synod of Oregon in
Its thirty-ninth session here this
week and part of next, when Rev.
R. C. Hutchinson of Persia, addres
sed the assemblage of 100 minis
ters and elders. Friday was "For
eign Missions Day." Rev. Hutchin
son stated that Christianity's foe
in the east is no longer Moham
medanism but Leninism.
Thursday a committee on bills
and overtures was named with Rev.
H. B. "nomas. Halfway, retiring
moderator. Rev. H. L. Bowman be
ing appointed.
The synod trustees were reelected

ROCK CRUSHER NEAR
SILVERTON IS BUSY
SUverton One of the county
rock crushers is now busy crushing
rock on the VanGordon ranch In
the SUverton Hills district, which is
being hauled by three trucks to the
Bridge Creek road the other side
of Drake's crossing. It is (bought
that this work will be finished by
fall which will make the road all
the way from this crossing to
Bridge Creek, a stretch of six miles,
graveled. This has been one of
the few really bad roads in that
section of the Hills.
TRAINING SCHOOL
INMATE INJURED
Woodburn Wayne Parkin en, a
bout 14 years old. an inmate of the
State Training school, was seriously
Injured Thursday afternoon when
he fell into the teeth of a manure
spreader on which he was riding
at the school. The machine was
being driven to the field and the
boy had been warned to keep away
from the back part of the load but
disobeyed and in some manner fell
Into the moving teeth. His left
leg was torn and mangled from the
groin to beloar the knee and his
clothing torn from his body. He
was rushed to the Salem hospital
by Dr. Gerald Smith but almost
bled to death before the hospital
was reached. It is thought that
his leg may be saved but will prob
ably be In a crippled condition. He
came to the school from Astoria.

ey left for Pacific City Thursday
morning where they will spend sev
eral days on a fishing trip near the
coast.

REMAINS OF GEORGE
GULLICKSON FOUND
Woodburn The bones of a man
were discovered In the mountains
near Estacada on July 4th, thought
to be the remains of George Gullick
sen who wandered away from his
borne near Woodburn on June 34,
1926 and was never beard from, al
though every effort was made to
trace him.
It is thought that he wandered
into the mountains end perished as
there was no evidence of foul play.
He was 30 years of age and his
disappearance created much excite
ment in this section. He was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. John GuUick
son. who are satisfied that the re
mains found are those of their son.
Scotts Valley The Boy Scouts
ot this place met Tuesday evening
at the Q. W. Myers' hall. Visitors
were Dr. McConnell and nephew;
Frank Powell and son, all of SU
verton. Dr. McConnell gave the
beys instruction on first aid. Af
ter the business session they were
entertained at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. J. O. Dixon, with games while
refreshments were served.
