ANNUAL RUN OF
MIRACLE STORY
San Clemente, Cal. (IP) One of
the "miracles" which occurred In
the early days ot Southern Calif
ornia's history as a province of
Spain was recalled by Mayor
Thomu F. Murphine of this city
. as he watched the crowds gether
on the moonlit beach for the an
nual run of grunlon.
The mayor, an authority on the
history olf this section, brought to
light the diary of Sebastian Viz
caino who commanded a Spanish
exploring fleet that set out from
Mexico in 1602.
On May 6 of that year, Vizcaino
cet out from Acapulco and beat
his way up the Mexican cop . past
the islands of Mazatlan, crossed
over to the Cape or San Lucas on
the tip of Lower California and,
after a few lively encounters with
head winds, managed to drop an
chor In the Bay of San Bemabe
By this time the supply of fresh
food had dwindled until there was
little left for the men to eat.
On June 8 he landed on the
beach at the height of the grunlon
season, which runs from April until
the end of June.
Vizcaino relates that the "moon
was in conjunction." The strange
appearance oi thousands ot small
fish, cast up on the beach to spawn

of the same ether, different only in
tneir irequency, or speed.
He accounts for the retarding of
falling bodies by small amounts of
neat which he says he finds con
tinually generated in some cub-
stances. He attributes tills heat to
a sore of conflict in waves.
A handy contrivance for any
kitchen is a group of rods suspend
ed from the ceiling on a rope run

Veal Chow, Chill Style; Buttered Peas,
Bread, Peach Buttor. Fruit Salad, Molass
es Balls and Coffee.
VEAL CHOPS. CHILI STYLE. Serving Four
4 chons. 1 Inch thick. 1 tcnsDoon salt.
14 teaspoon pepper, 4 tablespoons onions.
cups tomatoes, l tablespoon choppod
celery
Broil or saute the chops until
brown on both sides. Add the rest
of the ingredients and cook over a
very low fire in a coverec? pan for
114 hours. Turn frequently to permit
even- cocking.
MOLASSES BALLS
1-3 cup lat. 1 cup light brown sugar.
I etK. 1 cup water, V, cup molasses. 1
teaspoon singer. 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 't
teaspoon salt, 2'i cups flour. 1 teaspoon
aa. i teaspoon uaicing powder
Cream the fat and r.;:-ar. Add
the rest of the ingredients and beat
for 3 minutes. Half fill well greased
dep muffin pans. Bake in a slow
oven for 25 minutes.
FOR SUNDAY TEA
BACON AND CHEESE BARS, Serving Four
slices oread, 8 thin slices of cheese.
10 one-inch pieces of bacon, 2 tablespoons
catsup. .
Cub the crusts from the bread
and place the bread on a flat pan.
Lay the cheese slices on top the
bread and add two pieces of bacon
to each piece of bread. Sprinkle
with the catsup. Bake in a moder
ate oven for 15 minutes. Serve at
once.
ONION SANDWICHES. Serving Four
8 slices of buttered rye bread. 1 cup
thinly sliced sweet white onions, 8 pieces
lettuce. 4 tablespoons laiad oil. 3 table
spoons vinegar, teaspoon salt, tea
spoon paprika. 4 teaspoon dry mustartf
Mix the onions, salad oil, vinegar,
salt, paprika and mustard. Place
in a covered bowl and chill. When
ready to serve lay portions of the
onion mixture on the lettuce leaves,
which have been placed on the
bread. Arrange sandwich fashion
and serve at once. '

is at the head of a newly formed
feminine gourmet's club.
The Feminine Hundred club la a
petticoat version of the long famous
Hundred club, winch includes
France's most famous lovers oH
good French cookery and which
excludes women.
The women gourmet's club is no
prohibitionist organization. Nor is
its American president, Mrs. Paul
Ettlinger, a dry.
Bed and white wine were served
at the initial club lunch. Wine wiU
be served, at the discretion of the
nostesses at lunches to, follow, Mrs.
Ettlinger announces. J
Lunches are to be at members'
homes. They are limited to $1.80
the plate, including wines. At pres
ent 40 charter members belong to
the organization.

'DIVORCED' CHURCHES

tranged couple reunited by their
children, the northern and southern
Methodist churches in this school
town may be reconciled to serve
students at the University of Mis
souri. Divorced since 1844, when the
church split over the slavery ques
tion, leaders have reached a tenta
tive agreement for Joint use of the
southern church's new $600,000
edifice.
A proposal that the pastor be
chosen alternately from each con
gregation will be submitted to the
state conference next September.

frog for a flower bowl may be

JELLIED CHICKEN AND ASPARAGUS
Serving Eight
1 Vj cups cooked asparagus, 1 14 cups
cooked, diced chicken; cup sliced pi
mento stiffed olives, 1 teaspoon salt, 3
tablespoons granulated gelatin. 4 table
spoons cold water, 3 cups bolllns chicken
stock
Line a mold with the asparagus.
Add-the chicken, which has been
mixed with the celery. Add the layer
of olives. Soak the gelatin in cold
water 5 minute;. Add the boiling
water and stir until the gelatin has
dissolved. Add the salt and cool
until a little thick. Pour over the
chicken mixture and set in a cold
place to stiffen. Unmold on lettuce
leaves and surround with salad
dressing or mayonnaise.
EGO BISCUIT, Serrln Eight
cups flour, 8 tablespoons bakuu
powder, i teaspoon salt, teaspoon
sugar, 4 tablespoons (at. 1 egg. well
beaten, 2-3 cup milk, 4 tablespoons soft
butter.
Mix the flour, baking powder,
salt and sugar. Cut In the fat with
a knife. Mixing with the knife, add
the ess aud milk. When a soft
dough forms, pat it out on a floured
paper or board until very thin,
Spread with the soft butter and
roll up like a Jelly roll. The roll
should be VA Inches thick. Cut off
inch slices and place, flat side
up, next to each other on a greased
pan. Bake in a moderate oven until
brown (about 12 minutes).

a alow oven for 30 minutes. Un
cover and allow to brown for 15
minutes.
A custard pie is less liable to be
come "soaked" or foggy if the crust
is baked for eight minutes in a
moderate oven before the uncooked
filling is added. This-also applies
to tne baking of pumpkin pies.
Add a pincn ( k teaspoon) of salt
to all berry pies to improve their
flavor.

PORK CHOPS AND TOMATOES
(Baked)
8 pork chops, 2-3 Inch thick, H cup
tlour, hk teaspoon paprika. H teaspoon
salt, fl slices onions, 2 curt tomatoes.
Wipe off the chops with a damp
cloth. Roll them In the flour and
sprinkle with the paprika and salt.
Place in a baking dish and add the

Britain's vital statistics for a period
of 80 years ending in 1925. He finds
that since 1871 cancer has been In
creasing and tuberculosis deaths
dropping.
For three years Dr. Cherry has
suplemented his statistical studies
with laboratory work, and an
nounces his conviction that there Is
a definite relation between the two
diseases. He thinks the after ef
fects of tuberculosis give a person
a predisposition to oancer.
The theory Is that most cases of
tuberculosis which .have been;Oured
may give rise to cancer If the body
