SUCCESS FOR
MIAMI BATTLE
STIRS TAMPA
By EDWARD J. NEIL
Miami Beach, Fla., UVt The
mantle of luck that seemed to
sheath Tex Kickard's shoulders in
life aparently has fallen in blanket
fashion at his death over the en
tire Madison Square Garden cor
poration. Scarcely a month ago the direct
ors of the Garden organization, and
even doughty Bill Carey, the two
fisted railroad builder who has
taken Tex's place at the helm, ar
gued for days the feasibility of car
rying out Rickard's dream of an
outdoor heavyweight contest in the
south while winter gripped arenas
in the north. The plan, when or
iginated, seemed feasible to none
but Rlckard and even he had his
. doubts. .
It is no secret now that Tex, be-,
fore he died, told the directors of
his organization that the battle of
the Everglades, featuring Young
Stribling. the slugging Georgian,
and Jack Sharkey, of Boston, must
be considered in the light of his
own personal experiment. If any
profits were made on the affair,
the corporation would receive them.
Any loss Tex planned to foot him
self. So great has been the advertising
that has came to Miami Beach
through the battle itself, the influx
of newspapermen and prominent
visitors that other cities in the
south are casting envious eyes at
the publicity that has boomed this
city even beyond the exciting days
or laus and laze. Already urn
Carey has received propositions
from cities in California and other
parts of Florida, but Tampa on
the west coast seems to have out
distanced all the rest.
Carey was amazed at an unof
ficial offer of $500,000 from the rival
resort to stage another heavy
weight engagement next winter be
side the waters of Tampa bay. The
money was offered the Garden cor
poration, he said, merely for the
staging of a match in that city
without a thought of a share in the
profits.
Both Sharkey and Stribling,
close to top condition are planning
to taper off in workouts from now
until next Wednesday. Sharkey
scaled 180 after Wednesday's work
out, his lowest poundage in three
years. I
Stadium To Be Erected
On LaCreole Field At
Dallas; Contract Signed
Dallas The bids on the new Eta.-

Their bid was $4050 for a complete

A concrete stadium fitting the
natural bowl of the field has been
the desire of citizens of Dallas for
some time. The trustees of the old
LaCreole academy and Dallas col
lege had money Invested In bonds
and the grounds having been in use
for years by the high school and
public it was decided that an amphi
theater would be a fitting memorial
to the pioneer education institution
and a worthwhile lasting gift to
the public.
The plan bid on was ten 16 foot
section with a seating capacity of
600 persons and built so that units
could be added when needed. The
board called for bids for an unroofed

OFFENSE AND
DEFENSE SHOW
PLENTY CLASS
A confident, steady bunch of ball
tofsers from the Oregon State col
lege, known as the "Rooks" stepped
out onto the Salem high school gym
floor Wednesday evening and gave
the locals a 32 minute lesson in
how the great game of basketball
should be played. Incidentally be
fore the instructions were finished
the visitors had 31 points to their
credit while the pupils -garnered 12.
Salem's points came from four
baskets, two in each half, and four
scores from the gift line.
The Rooks proved to be a fast
playing bunch of youngsters. Fre
quently after casting off with the
oall, which they did whenever they
came within scoring distance, their
guards would be back in defense
position before the Salem offense
could form and get underway. And
it was a defense that worked, too.
The red and black were allowed to
get set for shots very few times
during the encounter; although
during the first few minutes of the
game they missed four or five that
were rather easy.
Lyman, former LaGrande center,
and playing, the same position for
the yearlings, lived up to advance
information. He played a fine game
and made every move count. Heart-
well proved to have a good eye for
the basket as well as being an ex
cellent guard. He shot four bas
kets during the evening.
Salem showed to advantage only
during the third period when they
held the rooks to six points while
they were collecting five for them
selves. Shortly after the start of
the fourth canto, the freshmen
'staged a rally which, netted them
eight points and- put the game
away.- The local offense did not
seem up to standard several of
the boys having suffered from colds
during the past few days. Sieg
munri did not get to start at all,
being too ill to play.
Duffey, former s'ar for the high
school was held to one basket which
he sunk from a distance during the
last quarter.
Twelve rooks . .were ' used during
the contest, while Coach Anderson
used eight.

The Pleasant Hill boys' team Is win

of Lane county this year, and are
doped to give the. locals a tough
struggle. The girls aggregation from
Lane county also comes with a good
record, and ft couple of interesting
games are being anticipated by local
fans.
After ringing up a total of seven
consecutive wins, the Stayton boys
took a beating from the Dallas
quintet at Dallas last Tuesday: The
locals were playing' without the
services of two regulars who were
out of the lineup because of schol

break the tie for. second place with
Seattle and also help the Bucks in
their climb toward th-j champion

Probably one reason Portland
did not do so well on its recent
northern trip was its weakened de

laid up with a bad cold and should
not have been in the line-up at
all, although he had to be used as
a relief man.
Portland has four more home

. FLAVOR
A SOUTHERN gentleman long ngo toiled with the
. roasting of many different choice coffees together
until he achieved a blend of such unusually rich and
mellow harmony that it delighted even his critical
palate.
That fine blend is Maxwell llouec. It took its name
from the hotel where it first became famous the old
Maxwell House in Nathvillc, celebrated throughout
the South for its hospitality, its old-time Southern
dibhes and particularly for its wonderful coffee. Here
distinguished travelers and belles and gentlemen of
the Old South first enjoyed the coffee which today is
pleasing more people than any other coffee ever offered
for sale.
"The Old Colonel' has lived to see the flavor he
created become America's most widely popular coffee.
Your own family and guests will appreciate Maxwell
House Coffee. Your grocer has it scaled in tin to pre
