The letter mentions a proposed
amendment to the compensation
act, expected to be introduced at
this aeseion, wherobv the accident
commission would take over the
harbor workers' commission which
is nov operated by the federal
government. This, it is dalmed,
will add to the commission's work

The salaries of the accident com
mtssloners are paid from the in

created by the assessment on con

The members of the commission
are Sam Laughlin, E. E. Bragg and

Senator Joe Dunne of ' Multno

that would make the membership

three, one member to be a woman
and one to be the state insurance
commissioner who would serve in
an ex-officlo capacity. In addition
to his salary as insurance commis

The crew of the gig was a relief

As the gig swung out from the
pier the canal tug Mariner with a
tow was coming along tne center oi
the canal about 300 yards from the
shore. Towing lights were displayed
by the tug, but the coxswain of the
gig apparently thought that tne
barges were behind the gig whereas
they were on each side.
Survivors said that no one
aboard the gig had noticed the
barges until the gig was about
feet from one of them. Then a man
cried to the coxswain, "Look out
There's a lighter alongside."
Previously Captain ones naa
ordered the gig's speed cut to half
because the main bearing was
burned out. When the coxswain
heard the cry of warning he swung
the rudder over but the gig struck
on the starboard bow. Everybody
was thrown overboard.
Captain Giles, who is a strong

dragged blm to the tug, but efforts
to revive blm failed.
The captain also saw a body
floating and called to man of the

of Captain Oriswold. The bodies oi
Wrenn and Captain Oriswold were

ANTS SEND SIGNALS
Pittsburgh IIP) How seme ants
talk has been deciphered in part
by aid of a radio amplifier and a
microscope.
They snap their Jaws together or
knock their heads on the ground.
Both actions produce minute sound
signals.
These studies of ants were mad
by Dr. Alfred E. Emerson, asso
ciate professor of soology of th
University of Pittsburgh. He ex
amined a species of termite, a wood
destroying ant common about Pitts
burgh, and also South American
termites.
The termites producing the wan)'
Ing signals thus far identified are
of th "soldier variety, Dr. Emer
son says, acting much like soldier
ants that guard queens and do
mestic ants lrom danger.
Dr. Kmerson finds that certain
of the soldiers, when agitated, shak
their heads, thumping the gtuud,
end thus warning the Insect inhab
itants of the village under their
guard. He explains the ground sig
nals by the property of the earth
to transmit sounds rapidly and dis
tinctly. Tne south American ter
mites studied are found to signal
by Jaw snapping.
