party Thursday afternon In Mrs. W
T. Hickey's home on Myers street.
Cotoneaster, holly, mistletoe and
Ted tapers were arranged attract
ively about the rooms. Mrs. Gardner
Knapp gave a reading on "Christ
mas in Bethlehem," and the group
sang Christmas carols.
A big Christmas tree held gifts
for the group. Thursday was Mrs.
Hickey's birthday anniversary and
at the tea hour a big birthday cake
was presented to her.

H. S. Pupils Give
Program at Hospital
Under the sponsorship of the In
stitutions department of the Salem
Woman s club, a group of high
school students presented a Christ
mas entertainment at the state
tuberculosis hospital on Thursday
evening. A group of pupils of Miss
Lena Belle Tartar, head of the
music department at the high
school, gave Christmas carols both
before and following the one-act
play ."The Christmas Burglar,"
which Mrs. Fred Duncan directed.
The singers, Bernice Rickman,
Ruth Smith, Miriam Hall, Florence
Borgeson, Elizabeth McCrone, Dons
Ross, Crelghton Jones, Kenneth
Abbott, Homer Smith, Vem Wilson
and Leroy Rudin, sang the follow
ing carols: "It Came Upon the Mid
night Clear," "Far In the East,"
"We Three Kings," "Joy to the
World." "Angels we Have Heard,"
and "Silent Night."
The cast of the "Christmas Burg
lar," a short play written by May
Flanner, Included Wesley Helse,
Jean Eastridge, Lee Coe and Stan
ley Price. William Gahlsdorf served
as property manager, Perry An
drews as stage manager, and Ed'

Miss Helen Pearce arrived Thurs
day from Berkeley, Calif., to spend
the holiday season witn ner motner,
Mrs. George Pearce and her sister,
Miss Dorothy Pearce. Miss Pearce
will remain In Salem until the mid
dle of January when she will re
turn to the Berkeley campus to
complete her work towards her
doctorate.
Monmouth Word has been re
ceived In Monmouth of the wedding
at Lambert, Mont., on December 4
of J. Leslie Howard and Miss Ida
Herbst. Mr, Howard la a brother
of Mrs. M. J. Teters of Monmouth
and Miss Herbst is a cousin of
Homer Hlght of this city. Both
have many friends In Monmouth.

A Christmas Cantata, "Bethlehem
Echoes," will be presented by the
choir of the First Evangelical
church, Sunday, December 23, at
1:30 o'clock. Mrs. Ethel Poling
Phelps, church pianist, will accom
pany the chorus.

written by Charles S. Poling, a
brother of Mrs. Ethel Poling Phelps,
