Tragedy Revealed in
Will of Actor Who Was
Exiled by Relatives

Theodore Roberts, "grand old man"
of the stage and motion pictures,
has lifted the curtain on a tragedy
of his We.
His will, made publlo here today,
reveals that he left his estate val
ued at "more than $10,000" to his
nephew, Edward Roberts Hlggins
of New York City, with the expla
nation that he had "suffered like
him that exile from borne."
"In my experience I remember
neither affection nor sympathy
from any member of my family
until such accomplishment had
been achieved by me that affection
became a part of pride in relation
ship," Mr. Roberta said in the will,
which was made here September 11,
12.
"During the darkest hour of my
life no word of sympathy or offer
of help from any member of my
family came to me, and I .hungered
for It as the wanderer in the des
ert thirsts for water. The pride
that kept me silent as a neglected
and unwanted child stayed with
me through life, through many
vicissitudes, and kept me silent even
while in a prison cell.
"Now that I am beyond the In
fluence of all earthly things, I want
these words said. If they leave any
unpleasant atmosphere over my
memory, so be IU"
Only one member of his family,
Hlggins, shared "a kindred isola
tion from the family," he said, and
it was to Hlggins he left his estate
and made him executor without
bond.
The veteran actor who was burled
here Tuesday, with many of the
most prominent persons of the mo
tion picture Industry paying him re
spect, enjoined his nephew to "ap
portion my belongings to the dif
ferent members of my family, in
accordant with his best Judgment."
He asked to be buried beside his
wife here but made no reference
to his former wife except Indirectly.
He served six months In Tombs
prison in New York when he could
not pay alimony to this wife who
had divorced him and neither
friend nor relative gave him aid.

New York. (IP) You may think
that you sleep like a log, but you
don't. The fairly typical sleeper
awakens, at least to part of his en
vironment, about 35 time in the
course of an ordinary night and in
general men are more restless than
women.
These facte have been determined
by H. M. Johnson, director of an In
vestigation at Mellon Institute of
Industrial Research University, of
Pittsburgh, and are published In the
current Harper's Magazine. More
than 90 different people have been
under observation for several months
during the Investigation, and ex
perts have recorded more than a
quarter of a million periods of rest
to determine how much sleep people
actually need and to get data about
how they sleep.
Subjects ranging In age from U
days to 03 years, of both sexes, and
of widely different stales of health
contributed to the experiments. One
of the reasons for the investigation
was to find out how little sleep is
necessary.
Plans are under way for a sea
plane line connecting South Ameri
ca and Germany.
