council held their regular semi
monthly meeting Monday evening,
transacting the usual business In a
record breaking p'riod ox IS min
utes when the meeting adjourned
until Monday, November 26, at
which time the tax payera of the
city are Invited to meet with' the
council and dlscust the 1929 bud
get, totalling $29,420, as prepared by
the budget committee. -
Careful consideration was given
the allocation of budget funds to
the various city departments by the

Menmouth, Nov. 21 -Willi am Rid
del), Jr., a farmer who lives south
of Monmouth Is planning on going
to New Zealand on an expedition to
study the method3 employed In
raising eheep in that country, and
11 possible to obtain a few point
ens of the sheep industry. Riddell's
greatest Interest in the trip is the
Romney, sheep, and he expects to
purchase from 60 to 100 sheep to
bring back with him. He is plan
ning on leaving San Francisco
November 29, and will probably be
gone for three months, spending
nearly a month in New Zealand.

STOLEN ROADSTER IS
RETURNED TO OWNER
Monmouth, Nov. 21 The Ford
roadster belonging to Merle Wilson,
which was stolen from the street In
front of the Mrs. O. Butler home In
Monmouth last Wednesday night,
has been recovered In South Salem,
where It had been abandoned. The
car had nearly seven gallons of gas
but was completely out of oil. There
was also an extra can of gas in the
car and a siphon hose which the
thieves bad been using to steal gas.
In. spite of the fact that the car
was gone nearly a week, It seems
to be practically unhurt.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Plant re
turned from a week's - visit with
Major and Mrs. Lewis Rose, who
live in Canada. Mr. Rose was form
erly manager of the Wigrich ranch
but owing to 111 health retired about
a year ago, and Mr. . Plant, his
brother-in-law Is , now managing
the ranch. r
-There are about 300 acres of hops
on the Wigrich farm which Is own
ed by Wigen and Richardson In
England and who are very much
pleased with the way Mr. Plant Is
caring for the place. They recently
sold the hops which were of a good
quajity.
Funeral services for Loren Divine,
infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Divine,
were held at the Buena Vista
church, November . 15. He died
Wednesday morning at the Doern
becker hospital In Portland follow
ing an attack of pneumonia. Be
sides the parents there are surviving
a brother, Jack, 10 years old, sister
Lois, four; grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Jake Nash of -Buena Vista

STREET IMPROVEMENT
WORK BEING RUSHED
Independence, Nov. 31. The city
council Is finishing up its street im
provement for the year preparatory
to turning over the reins to the new
incoming council.
Men are employed completing the
concrete work on Monmouth street
made necessary by the changing of
the water mains on that street.
Some needed repairs to bridge ap
proaches, cross-walks and fencing
on the fill at the north approach to
Main street Is also being done. Sev
eral new cross-walks were made ne
cessary by the paving of several
blocks this summer. . .
