New York. Dec. 21 (LP It Is but
natural that old memories returned
last night when Jake Schaefcr em
ployed the marvelous style of his
father to triumph over Welker
Cochran In the third block of their
18.2 balk line match for the world's
title, now held by loehran.
Schaefer, who has won the first
three blocks of this 150 point
struggle, now leads by 900 to 590
points. Cochran's last chance to
keep his crown will come this after
noon and evening when the final
two blocks will be played. The
champion faces a man-sized Job.
The game last night was sprink
led thickly with difficult shots by
both men. In the 21st Inning Coch

the technique for which he Is

The matchless skill of old Juke

Oregon Sportsmen Rally
Against Reclamation's
Inroad On Clear Lake
By DWIGHT O'DELL
Oregon sportsmen are mustering
resolutions against the proposed ir
rigation projects which would take
water from Clear Lake, generally
conceded to be the head water of the
McKenzle river. Lane, Linn, Benton,
Marion and Deschutes county or
ganizations have registered already
their disapproval of the move.
Clear lake, which lies In the Cas
cades almost midway between At
bany on the west and Frlneville to
the east, has never been stocked
with fish in the memory of the
present generation of sportsmen.
Despite Its practical fnacccslbillty
by . utomobile it has been a haven
for nimrods of the entire state who
each year take large numbers of fish
from Its waters, until the supply Is
gradually diminisning.
At the meeting of the Santlam as ¬
sociation In Albany last week the
task of restocking the lake was dis
cussed and the project was received
with favor. Spoilsmen demand
however that the state fish commis
sion lend its full cooperation to the
move.
Another body of water which Is a
Jewell for men who like to buck Into
the real wild west Is Pamelia lake at
the base of Mt. Jefferson which has
a stock unsurpassed In quantity In
the Cascades. Three Salem men were
the first non professionals to break
through last spring and were fol
lowed a week later by a party of
nine local sportsmen. Due to the
high altitude Pamelia Is open less
than four months during the year
giving it ample protection from fish
hogs.
Any a'tempt to reach the lake by
an amateur trailsman Is practically
useless before May 25. Iola Smith,
Doug O'JIara, Daryl Evans and C. E
Kendall, the latter a 'professional
packer, went through June 18 last
summer out of Detroit. So difficult
was the trail that It took the four,
more than six hours using fast trail
horses to travel between !9 and 20
miles, all a steady, upyard dumb.
Anyone enjoying comfort on their
week end fishln trips should not
attempt Pamelia lake tor it Is a
back breaker to a novice horseman
but the sportsman who wants real
fishing, scenery, and a great trip,
don t pass It up.
